Cuban Rice Bowl
I’ve never had authentic Cuban rice before, for comparison. I would say that it is similar to red beans and rice, but with a different flavor. I did not feel that it was very spicy hot. However, my nose was running a little by the time I was done eating it. I thought that the lime flavor really came through, even though it was listed as the last ingredient. It was not too limey for my taste.
Gourmet Backpacking International Fare
I was a bit skeptical about the garlic crema sauce pairing with black beans, plantain, and rice, but this is one of my favorite Good To-Go meals now. The spices with the added texture of the plantain against the rice is a winner in my book (or palate, I suppose) and was certainly created at the hands of their expert chef. It rehydrated perfectly following the package directions. I love the fact that it is a small company with a sense of humor (see package labeling!) which also support stewardship of its local coastline community and follows a zero food waste philosophy by composting.
Tastes Incredible
Love this Cuban Rice Bowl. Tastes delicious and I really appreciate that is ti gluten free and vegetarian. It was great to use while camping since I didn't need a bowl, just pour hot water into the pouch and a few minutes later - presto! Highly Recommend
Solid Meal
Good flavor and even had a bit of a fresh lime taste. At 5000' elevation, it cooked fully per the directions. One of the better Good to Go options.
me and my hiking pal's favorite trail meal of all
I hiked Isle Royale National Park with a friend and this was the winner for tastiest meal of all time from both of us. The lime crema sauce is what puts this meal over the top. Everything from this brand is delicious, and this is the best of all. Astonishingly, these good-to-go brand meals have great nutrition too, good protein, high fiber, and micros (vitamins and nutrients). I'm particularly sensitive to sodium as I lived with someone on a low-sodium diet for 5 years, and Good-to-go meals have the lowest sodium among all the dehydrated meal brands.
Mixed bag in our household
Since this is a two serving dish, this review is the summary of mine and my wife's opinion of the Cuban rice bowl. In short, I think it would have been preferable if the garlic crema sauce could have been in a separate pouch that was nested inside the main pouch, and individuals can add a desired amount of sauce to the rice & beans. Or, if sold in single serving pouches with varying levels of intensity of the sauce. Also - I think it'd be helpful if they could tack the desiccant packet to the side of the pouch with a dot of adhesive, so it's easier to find and remove from the pouch before you add the boiling water. I thought it was perfectly flavored, my wife thought the seasoning was overbearing.
Delicious!
Great savory flavor, with just the right amount of heat. This is relatively low sodium compared to similar meals (only 50% if you eat the whole pouch). I think there is enough here to share, but it was so good I ate most of it myself.
Too Spicy for Me
After a long day of hiking, when I just get one dish to eat for dinner, I need to like it, and this one was just too spicy for me. It was also too crunchy at first - I had to leave it sit in the bag about twice as long as they claimed. After that, the flavors were good, but very strong. At home I would have topped it with sour cream and cheese, and served it with a mild starch on the side, but a backpacking meal isn't supposed to need extras. On the other hand, if you have been looking for a healthy, flavorful and spicy meal with a generous sized portions - this is for you! Just make sure to add the boiling water and starting "cooking" this as soon as you hit camp so it's really done by the time you want to eat.
Lots of Flavor!
I really enjoyed this meal! Very tasty and filling. I always add a little extra time and water to make sure everything is totally rehydrated. Would highly recommend!
Vegetarian Thru-hiker’s dream
My spouse loves this meal. They’ve been on the AT since March and so far this is the most calorically dense, best-tasting meal. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone watching their weight or doing an overnight, but my partner is DESPERATELY trying not to get too skinny and things like this help a lot.
