Fits my foot well
I wear these more casually and bought them after a foot injury that effected my first metatarsal. The sandal fits well and I liked that I could adjust it to fit my foot/preference. The way it’s shaped takes pressure off my first metatarsal joint and makes it very comfortable to walk in. It’s aided very much in the recovery of my foot. I was able to walk 4 miles today at the zoo with no pain. Also the straps don’t bother me at all nor do I have problems with the Velcro like some other reviews suggested. But again, I was just casually walking not strenuously hiking. Don’t much like how they look but I’m going for function over fashion so doesn’t bother me.
Great soles, uncomfy straps
I really wanted these shoes to be awesome. There's long sharp kiawe thorns on many beaches here in Hawaii and I was looking for shoes with a denser sole that would somewhat resist punctures (yay Vibram)... Unfortunately the straps were very uncomfortable and had sharp edges that dug into my feet, as shown by the red marks from just wearing them around the house for a few minutes. I adjusted the 3 different velcro configurations in different ways and still, the shoes were too uncomfortable to imagine wearing on any kine adventure. If you have less sensitive feet and skin, maybe these shoes would be great for you. They're well built. But I will not be wearing them, sadly, so they must return. Honestly, it's a hit-or-miss situation buying shoes online, and since REI doesn't offer free return shipping, I don't think I'm going to buy shoes from their website anymore.
Great outdoor sandals
I've been wearing these for about two months now and they're definitely my new go-to outdoor shoe. They're super comfortable and hold up well on hikes, in lakes, paddle boarding and camping. I see other reviews complaining about the straps - mine rubbed slightly the first two times I wore them, but were fine after that. Are they cute? Not really, but they're not as bad as some of the other stuff out there! I tried on other brands - this felt much more supportive and sturdy than Tevas and way more comfortable than the two kinds of Chacos I tried. I'm an 8.5 and wear the 9 in these. Recommend!
Quality issues
I really wanted to love these sandals! They're nice and minimal instead of being clunky. The vibram rubber is grippy. The overall look of them is pretty good for a hiking/active sandal. But the quality of them is disappointing. The right foot fits very different then the left. And the Velcro straps are different lengths! See photo. The toe strap on the right feels like it's starting to twist after about 3 short wears, which is causing the metal part to dig into my for. Hoping they break in with time. I had also tried them on in a different color before, and the fit was completely different in a different color, which didn't really make sense. I'm hoping Merrell improves the quality and consistency, because these have great potential. Just not quite it. Would also love to see them in fun colors :)
I basically lived in these!
I went EVERYWHERE in these! Hiked all through the Wasatch mountains, Moab, Bear Lake, Yellowstone, you name it! I'm a get your feet wet type of girl when I'm in the wilderness so I can't tell you how much I appreciated finding a well made dual hiking/water sandal. With that awesome Vibram grippy bottoms and velcro top. I was hiking up waterfalls like a champ! LOVE these sandals. Definitely my go to gor summer adventuring. Thanks Merrell for your awesome customer service and commitment to making high quality hiking gear!
Comfortable flat heel
Based on these online reviews, I would not have purchased this sandal. But I saw them in the store and tried them on. I’ll echo what another reviewer has said: perfect blend between a Chaco and a Teva. The sole isn’t as rigid as a Chaco which I like. It also has a neutral heel (not quite negative) which is important for my foot health and comfort. They might run a little small but I can wear my natural size- my feet run narrow so this might also not be great for wider feet. With all that being said - I think they’re a home run.
An underrated sandal
I love these sandals. They are the perfect mix of a chaco and teva. They literally meet in the middle between the other two types. Arch support: less agressive than chaco but still there. Comfortable sole not very hard or will make your feet hurt. Comfortable straps that support the foot. My one complaint: I typically wear size 8, but the 8's were shockingly small so I ordered the 9's. The 9's are a touch too big so I have to tighten them all the way. The problem is, there is not a lot of velcro on the band so I don't have a way to secure all the extra tail so I may end up having to cut it. Otherwise I enjoy them.
Tried so hard to like
Good traction and I really wanted to like them. I liked that you can turn them into slippers by taking the back strap out. The color also matches many hiking pants. However, they caused terrible blisters on the back of both heels when I wore them without socks and made the rest of my backpacking trip really painful. These might work with socks but definitely not for me without socks.
50/50 of your heel being blistered
I normally wear a size 8 and I ordered another sandle and it was a half size to big so I ordered a 7 in these and they're about a half size to small but fit my foot better than the 8s. For just a small walk the back strap on my heel made a blister immediately. I'm honestly surprised that with these being advertised for being worn in the water that they didn't put more into the back strap for cushion. Honestly I think the best products for merrell are there closed foot hiking and tennis shoes, I've never been disappointed by one them but twice now I've been let down with the sandles
Straps too tight, even with velcro adjustment
Unfortunately the straps are not generous enough. Too bad the straps won't extend without leaving the velcro half closed. The soles are awesome and very flexible. Wish Merrell offered this in a wide. I did try a size up, but again the straps weren't generous enough. Sadly, these had to be returned.
