So far so good. Very comfortable with really good grip. Only been one hike but love them so far.
Unfortunately these WP shoes sound like you're walking with food cling wrap on your feet. That must be how you keep your feet dry? I actually think the sound is coming from the glue used for the insole. Every step feels like the insole is popping or crinkling under foot. I have video to show, just flexing the shoe like you're stepping makes a similar sound but video isn't on YT, so I can't upload it here. Take cling wrap and crunch it up in your hand and that's the sound it makes. So, there's no way I can wear these indoors and it's too intrusive of a sound to wear them in nature. Probably just a bad shoe; never had a problem with other WP Merrell shoes.
I am an HVAC technician that does a ton of walking through all types of terrain everyday. First off I want to say the Alverstone's were very comfortable from day one and are still today even though they are just about worn out. Traction is excellent and they dont seem to track dirt indoors. I am in wet conditions often, especially grass in the morning and washing equipment. This said the Alverstone was 100% waterproof for the first 6 months, afterwards they were more water repellent than waterproof. Thus the 4 star rating. Bottom line, I was very happy with the Alverstones. Merrell are always comfortable and good quality, which is what I want for my hard earned money.
NOT WATERPROOF OR EVEN WATER RESISTANT!!! I only exposed these shoes to walking through wet grass and after about 10 short walks my feet and socks were saturated. Almost immediately the inside was wet. Within 10 yards of walking through short wet grass the insides were soaked! Hard to get them dried out as well (takes a couple of days exposed to sun and outdoors) Also very heavy. I could tolerate that if they were as the the tab on the shoe reads "DRY"
I really wanted to love these Merrell Alverstone Waterproof hiking shoes because they were good looking, and on sale (!). And I've worn Merrell shoes / boots for 25+ years. I got a good price on them, but unfortunately had to return them as the heel slipped too much for me. Otherwise, the 9.5 size fit as expected and I liked the sole. Just couldn't see wearing them outside after I walked around inside the house for a few days and felt the constant heel slippage. Too bad. Nice shoe with a good weight and wish they would have fit me better. Might fit the heel of others just fine.
Shoes were super comfortable and withstood a good hike
Got these on sale to wear on the weekends while I dry my clunky old work/backpacking boots out. They fit great with lightweight hiking socks, are much lighter than boots, and keep me dry while I wander around the wet gardens and fields in the morning. Also working well for mountain biking with some big flat pedals on the bike. Seem like they will hold up much better than the other brand I've tried. I'd get the mid height ones if you are worried about your ankles, these are pretty low, like running shoes.
Every pair of Merrell shoes I buy seem to get worse and worse. I always get a 10.5, and these fit but in an odd way: the top of the laces were wide and diverging instead of being parallel like the lower part of the shoe, and the shoe box was huge. But still they have a snug fit, so I tried to break them in. The round laces are terrible, and come untied in 5-10 minutes, even if double knotted. I'm looking into flat laces as an upgrade. The soles are very stiff, like wearing a pair of wooden clogs, although they seem to be breaking in slightly over the past month. The cushioning is terrible, so I'm going to replace with Dr. Scholls inserts. I bought them because they are waterproof, and I walk in wet grass almost every morning. However, after about a month my feet are usually soaked after a 15 minute walk, so I have to take them off and let them dry out. I'll try and spray waterproofing on and see if that helps. All in all, they fit but oddly, aren't really comfortable and aren't really waterproof.
Returned: After hearing how comfortable Merrells were, and finding myself in need of a low top waterproof hiker, I was excited to try these out. They were so uncomfortable I sent them back. 1) There are substantial, rough seams in the heal-cup of the shoe. Felt like there would've been significant heal chaffing, and blister battles. 2) The shoes just feel bulky. I think I've worn full high-top hikers that felt less clunky. For reference: I'm a mid-40's, 6'0", 155lb male with years of hiking experience in the PNW. I wear a 10.5-11 size shoe, and have a broad(ish) fore-foot and narrow heal. I still hope to try some Merrells in the future, but these were *not it*
The shoe is well made but these are hard on my feet, the last pair of Merrell's I had fit really snug around my toes, so this time I bumped it up a half size. When I first put them on I thought they fit pretty good but after working in the yard and walking my dogs a few times, these shoes just destroy my feet... The pain is more than I can bear and by the end of the day, I could barely walk. I wish I would have noticed sooner they just don't fit as well as I first thought. I wouldn't want to discourage someone from trying this shoe but for me, a person with flat feet they just didn't work out as I expected.
