I bought the Chameleon 8 waterproof. These shoes are extremely low quality for the amount I paid. The stitching came undone on both shoes within 6 months of wearing. Fast forward 1.5 years of wearing these shoes for WALKING (~95% of the use was for walking), they are basically garbage due to falling apart. Also, the waterproofing did not last a year. I had waterproofing from Merrell that lasted 4+ years. I hope it is just this pair of shoes. This is my experience with wearing this shoe. I have others that I hope hold up significantly better. If I recall correctly, I bought the pair from Merrell, off their website. I figured, since it was a fairly expensive pair of shoes, that it would be high quality and long lasting. I was extremely disappointed. This is my opinion based off of my experience. I have worn other footwear from Merrell that have lasted a long time. This was not it.
I bought these as an alternative to Keen sandals. To me they seem more like tight fighting slip on loafers with the elastic cord being more decorative than functional. It's hard to get them on - requires a finger inserted behind the heel playing the role of a shoe horn. Also, the elastic cord release on the left shoe does not operate well - requires pulling very hard. They will serve as my backup shoes and maybe they will break in better over time but I have since ordered a pair of Keen Arroyo II Hiking Shoes which are no longer sold by REI but can be ordered from Keen or other suppliers.
These are my work shoe . I wore the chameleon 7 prior to wear these 8's. I'd say these are a step down in quality to the 7's but will hold up . The upper part seems a bit thinner and softer comparing them to the 7's. The bottoms have bigger lugs and no bottom plastic plate to them. Really liked the bottom plate . I do from time to time get that squeak that people talk about . They are very comfortable . These 8's have better ventilation than the 7's for sure . I ordered black cause I need black shoes for work and I'd say that these are a very faded black , noticeable blue tone to it. Disappointed in that. Also these don't have a front toe guard like how the 7s had . Still a good show but definitely a lower quality from the previous version.
Received the Chameleons today and the right shoe had been previously worn. REI shipping fresh pair out but disappointed in sending out worn material…...
It's a neat looking shoe. I liked the concept of using a draw cord and cincher, which is what I have on my Salomon trail runners, but Merrell made a poor design choice by using an elasticized cord. It ends up getting jammed in the cincher sometimes. Also, the inner soul squeaks against the inside of the shoe. This is fairly annoying. Ended up returning these.
These shoes are beast! Straight out of the box they are comfortable and rugged! I've had mine for 2 years now and they have been used regularly and my 168lb st bernard had chewed on the interior heel portion and they still haven't stopped! I absolutely love these shoes and I wouldn't hesitate to buy more Definitely worth the price.
Comfortable but questionable quality. I have owned three pairs of these shoes and had to return two out of the three. The first pair was exchanged because the shoelace slide/clasp (unsure of the technical term) is cheaply made of plastic and broke after normal use. The shoes lace is a circular (continuous loop without ends) of stretchy cord so it couldn't be tied like regular shoelaces, and the slide/clasp couldn't be replaced. When functioning correctly, it is pretty comfortable; but it is a poor design because when it fails, it cannot be repaired. The second pair was returned because after minimal use, the padding/cushioning began falling out around the back of the heal of one of the shoes. The defect began causing blisters and rubbed spots. There was no way to repair or add cushioning. I rated the shoe a 3 star because my third pair seems to be holding up. While I used to wear a lot of Merrell products, their quality has suffered over the past 5 to 10 years.
I have similar Merell show, same size ,but not stitched in arch of the foot. It fit perfectly. These shoes are stitched in the upper part, so they too tight. They go back unfortunately. Also label inside shoe is very mach inside shoe, very inconvenient to see, please let it know to the manufacturer.
This is my fourth pair of Chameleons. Still comfortable and a good looking shoeThis pair has an issue though.m, they are loud! They squeak and creak with each step. Loud enough that folks comment about it. Hopefully a bit of wear will make it stop.
I have owned 3 pairs of these shoes now. I have tried several other brands as well as other merrells and nothing comes close. These shoes are amazing for both hicking as well as a casual sneaker.
