I'd eat this at home!
This is, by far, one of my favorite backpacking meals ever! It has nice solid chunks of vegetables, excellent consistency, and tastes absolutely superb! Bonus points for being vegan friendly! The instructions were spot on and easy with the required water being the exact amount to give it great texture. The portioning is generous. The package says 2 servings, and unless you're a big eater, this will last 2 meals. Overall this is an excellent product I will definitely pack again.
A Hearty Feast for the Vegan Camper x2
Good to go boasts an eclectic array of freeze Dried camping meals in a pouch. This is one of their vegan options. The Kale and White Bean Stew is a very hearty meal enough for 2 people with a generous serving for each person. The flavor is good but I would’ve wanted just a tad more salt flavor, that is just my personal preference. You DO need to be cautious about preparing this meal as 3 cups of boiling water is a lot to add to the pouch(so make sure you are preparing this on a flat surface. Be careful in sealing the pouch to let the stew rehydrate. After 15 mins,as per directions the stew comes out just like it’s title states. You can eat this in the pouch but because it’s a stew and has a fair amount of liquid,I’d suggest that campers have a plastic bowl to add this to,makes for less mess in eating. This is a meal that Inwould definitely share with someone as I don’t like to over eat when I am out camping. Also, this is a Fall and Winter meal. I would not suggest this as a meal for summer camping but that is also a personal preference. The stew really gets your internal temp core heated up. All in all this is a good option for vegan folks who do not want to sacrifice ethics and diet for preservatives and additives. I like the fact that these meals seem to have no other added preservative other than it’s freeze dried and sealed.
Surprised how good this one was!
I am a little surprised how much I liked this meal. If I hadn't gotten the opportunity to try this in a test, I never would have tried it. I have tried other vegan options for dehydrated meals, but my initial thought was that this would be a bit bland - I was wrong. It was actually quite flavorful and filling. My one qualm is that it is a little watery when adding the recommended amount of water. If you want it to be more "stew-like" I recommend dialing back the water just a little. I would also recommend this as a colder-weather meal since it is hearty. Finally, for those counting, I think it is a great calories-weight ratio, and protein, for a vegan meal.
Love it
My favorite meal for outdoors and I also cook it as a sauce for pasta/rice/bulgur etc at home, not too salty. Why is it out of stock now? Should always be available!
Very good & worth the price
Bought this flavor on a recommendation from an outdoor magazine. Was very glad I did. I usually eat most MH "two serving" freeze dried meals alone, but this was too large for me to finish. It would be plenty for two hungry guys on a trail all day. Consistency and taste was great. Flavor was great. Next time I bring it I'll just plan to share it with a partner in advance so that none gets wasted. If you're like me and have had spotty luck venturing outside of MH, give this a try.
one of the best I've tried so far
I was looking forward to trying the Good to-go products... and were not disappointed! Although this is marginally more expensive than other brands/products, I think it is worth it, for this recipe anyway (I haven't tried other GTG products yet).... This particular packet takes 3 cups of water, so it's particularly good if it is a cold evening... it came out great, hearty and delicious, it tasted like stew off the stove, really.... it is definitely going on the next trip and we'll try other GTG packages too...
Be prepared for nonstop farts after this!
It tastes ok. Extremely filling. Super hard to digest so make sure your tentmate isn't a first date---it's gonna be a smelly next 24 hours.
Barnyard Grub
I really wanted to like this, since this is the first company that offers most flavors of backpacking food in 1-serving pouches, since I do often backpack alone. The ingredient list sounded amazing, yet somehow I felt like I was eating nature instead of spending time in nature - felt like a goat eating grass. Sadly, it tasted like something you’d feed to a barnyard animal. How can you make such good ingredients taste so awful?!?!?! I guess I know I’ll never go Vegan!
Decent Meal
This was ok. Flavor was decent, it was really bean heavy and could have used some grains. I get that it is a vegan option, but if you do eat meat the flavor really could have used it. At 5000', I let it sit an extra 10 minutes and some of the beans were still not done. With the recommended 3 cups of water it was pretty soupy. If you're at elevation would recommend starting with 2 cups of water then adding the last 1 cup later to help it finish cook.
Finally, a tasty vegan option
As a vegan, I was pleased to see an option for me...because most brands seem to offer minimal meals for special dietary needs. This meal is actually pretty tasty too. As with all freeze-dried meals I've had from Good-to-Go the spice level is minimal which is probably the smartest move for mass appeal. Hot sauce takes care of it. Portion size is good for a large meal for one or an appetizer for two people.
