Headlamp was not bad easy to use. Good light output. My batterys die withing 3 hours or less. But maybe it was just the battery life. From bening on the shelf life. Did purchase this one and the blue one. The same day the battery did last more on the blue o kn e under the same setting. The battery that came with them where Energizer. By the way the lamp will stay on. Just on a really low light output. My trip was to the Washington APE cave. I did want to do both but the lamp battery gave out on me walking back from the small cave. Yes I would buy again. Just make sure to carry extra batterys.
I reached out to Black Diamond to see if the battery issue with my 375 was due to a bad production batch, or if the fundamental engineering for Storm 375 is flawed. Incredibly the rep confirmed that this is not "an isolated incident, as this has been [his] experience with the headlamp as well". As if that was not shocking enough, the rep then suggested that I should "return the headlamp and purchase the Storm 350 which is last years model and is out performing the Storm 375". The rep even sent me an Amazon link as BD no longer sells the previous version. Wow...... I mean seriously? This product needs to be recalled and taken off market ASAP.
This headlamp met most of my expectations, but I can't overlook this serious flaw. The lamp jumps to the lowest setting sometimes, without touching it. This only happened after a few hours of use and when using the default main lamp setting, so I suspect it is a battery saving "feature". You can ramp it back up but eventually it jumps back to the lowest setting. Most headlamps will at least try to be in their brightest until they die, which I prefer. Otherwise I had no complains. I did return it to get the old Storm (although that one has a mosquito buzzing sound). If this issue is resolved I will definitely be purchasing this again.
Never even made it into the bush. Noticed the beam strength die quickly with at home use, went to change the batteries and looks like the ones that came with it burst. Very disappointed. The cost of shipping alone was not worth it.
I was hesitant to purchase this headlamp due to the many negative reviews but I have its predecessor, the Storm 350, and absolutely love it. I rolled the dice and gave this a try, unfortunately the reviews were accurate. This headlamp chews through a fresh set of batteries in under 2 hours. It also turns off the high beam after just a few seconds. I was hoping the included batteries were of poor quality after having to replace them after my first outing. However, a fresh set of batteries wore down after just 2 morning, pre-work hikes. There is clearly a defect in this product as even on the highest setting, which I was not using, the batteries should be good for like 5+ hours.
Was impressed with the look of the "Storm 375". Surprised it came with batteries as well. Lots of lighting options, a little complicated but not too bad. Had it figured out, wore it around, and most impressed with light quality. Next day I used it to change my truck tire at night, and wham-o it would not stay on bright. Very annoying. Checked batteries with a multimeter, and all are good. Glad I was not using on an expedition. I've been a coop member for 42 years and expect more from REI to check out quality and avoid defective products. I see that others have had similar issues with this headlamp.
I love all of the varied features of this top-of-the-line head lamp. More operational info is needed. For instance: While in the off-mode I measured a 2 milli-amp constant current flow from the batteries (while it monitors the on/off switch :-) Simply remove the batteries to preserve the them while the lamp sits on the shelf. Also, regular alkaline AAA cells will not support the full-bright setting of the high-powered light for more than a brief moment (the current quickly drops). Lithium-ion batteries are needed for the high-bright setting. Knowing this additional information, I decided to keep my unit, having found work-arounds.
Got the previous Storm with 500 lumens late last year for my ultra paddle board race. 220km and the torch did its thing perfectly for the night slog in rain and morning fog. But just last week when I took it out of the bag to take it camping, I noticed that the Powertap sensor on the side no longer works. I use it sparingly, usually at its dimmest and only Powertap it when I need it on demand. But that's no longer working. Now I'm forced to use the dimmer mode with the cycle loop from the main top button and not getting much response even after mailing support with the problem I got. I hope warranty is as good as it says.. Barely a year.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Worth noting that we do have a three year warranty on our lighting products. I'd recommend that you file a warranty claim with us here: https://warranty.bdel.com/CreateCase/StepOne and we can look into a solution for you.
Purchased on 12/18, and REI staff were unable to confirm whether or not the unit I purchased was part of the bad batch referenced by other reviewers. Turns out that it was. Called Black Diamond who recommended returning to store and provided a discount code for replacement item. I don't recommend purchasing this until Black Diamond has time to pull all the defective units from stores and get them replaced with new ones... probably not until early 2019. (Meantime, it seems that Black Diamond isn't even selling this on their website!)
I'm pretty disappointed with this headlamp, especially given the hefty price. While trying to use it the first time setting up my tent in the dark, the light toggled from bright to dim back to bright unpredictably without being touched. When I tried to use the buttons to return to bright, it would toggle through a rainbow of colors. Thankfully, I had a traditional flashlight to save the night. This is my second Black Diamond brand headlamp, the first of which was equally quirky and unreliable. I just need a bright headlamp with two positions; on and off. The colors don't serve any purpose for hiking or camping. I've given this brand two chances but I'll be trying a different brand in the future.
