First impression -- wow -- warm at -20F!!!
I've been a year 'round commuter for 20+ yrs, and this was my first experience with the Naughtvind: money well spent. Very well spent. My first use was during today's commute at -20°F/-50-ish wind chill, and the seemingly thin jacket exceeded (almost) all expectations on my 5-mile commute. It was more than warm enough when combined with 3 other layers (short-sleeve base, long-sleeve quarter-zip base, long-sleeve quarter-zip light fleece). Indeed I overdid it slightly and arrived surprisingly sweaty to work. I see myself using this jacket on typical cold days in Chicago, say 0-10°, with just my usual work attire of t-shirt with dress shirt and v-neck, but will probably need to open the pit zips. I was a little worried that the jacket wouldn't be warm enough with the generous back vents, but those vents are quite necessary! Fit seems spot-on to mfr sizing chart. I'm 6'4", 210lbs (dress shirt of 16.5" neck and 34-35 sleeve). The large is generally great, although an extra half inch in the sleeve would be perfect for me (see below). A few thoughts on jacket specifics... 1) I had minor chilling around the wrists, probably because I was using my drop-bar pogies with my thinnest gloves lacking a cuff. Cuffed gloves or more attention to pulling down base sleeves or tightening the sleeve closures might have prevented this. 2) The middle pocket opening seems somewhat high compared to my other jackets and jerseys, although the L and R outer pockets are not full depth. One the bike, I had some minor difficulty finding the pockets to insert my fogged glasses, mostly because I was unfamiliar with the pocket placement and because the generous pockets nonetheless lie quiet flat on the back when on the bike. 3. The "pit" zips seem nicely long and extend past the arm pit to start approx 3" down the upper arm.
