Great watch, but the price.....

So I've owned the Fenix 5 plus two days now and I have to say I love it. For running it seems to be very accurate (distance, pace, HR, etc). The music experience has been great too. On the 645 music I had some drop outs whenever I would move the watch behind my body and it seems as though they have fixed this with the 5 Plus. Contactless payments and the maps have both been working as they should. The bad of course is the price. $800 (plus tax on top of that) is pretty insane for a watch. I only purchased it because I wanted the ruggedness and durability of a Fenix watch plus what the 645 music and Vivioactive 3 music had to offer new feature wise (mainly music). It's a great watch but the price is going to turn people off to it for sure. Is music, Garmin Pay, and maps worth the additional $150 you're paying for this watch vs the original 5? That's definitely the question that's to be left up to the consumers.... P.S. not sure if a high price to pay for a device warrants me taking one star off, because obviously it isn't a functionality flaw or issue. But the fact that it is so expensive makes me think about returning it every now and then So that is most definitely a negative in my mind.

Compass calibration issues
mathematician
I tested four of 5 plus watches and three out of four had compass calibration issues. The compass cannot be calibrated no matter where I tried it. I also updated the firmware to the latest but the problem persists. This is a very bad compass and I recommend that anyone who gets one of these watches checks the compass for calibration before it is too late. I think that Garmin should recall all affected watches.

Literally does it all!

This watch is awesome! I love it! I thought it would be too bulky and it turns out the watch fits perfect on my wrist! I do recommend going and trying it on. I love the capabilities this watch has with running and doing different activities! It’s super detailed! Overall, a lot of people thought it was dumb to purchase a watch like this first cuz of the price and because they thought it was overkill but the bottom line is, I’ll have this watch for at least 5+ years! This is a great watch! The only thing..... that I’m not crazy about is the Garmin connect store.... it’s kind of cheesy and the reviews are spotty. But aside from that I love this watch! So glad I made this purchase!

Beautiful and functional watch

This watch is simply impressive since I was upgrading from a Garmin forerunner 620. The smart watch functions like heart rate, Garmin pay, text notifications were all great. Even just using it as a step counter was worth while. The only complaint I have that reduced it from 5 stars is how it lasted about 3 weeks then froze up one night. After performing a hard reset the LED's for the HRM would not light up. The step counter stopped and the altimeter was obviously off. I sent it back to Garmin after a short call with their tech support. I am still awaiting the new item in the mail.

Does not deliver to the promise or price

+ Looks good, great battery life, accurate gps, lots of functionality - Optical HR sensor completely useless for weight lifting, indoor rowing or anything else involving use of hands. Also incorrect readings in cold weather before hands warm up. Unless you only run/bike in warm weather you need HR chest strap regardless - Sw issues. Notifications occationally stop working. Device freezing. Mobile sync not working. These are not frequent and just require reboot for a fix, but I expect better quality for this price. Considering returning it.

Poor synchronization with iPhone

The graphic is almost unimproved from the previousFenix 5, and it has major problem with notifications. Particularly, the messages. Once it has been disconnected with my iPhone for a while, I will need to reset everything. I mean like delete the watch from the sync items and add it again. Manually take delete the connection from wifi and add it again. And it takes time to do a successful pairing. Plus I have to tick all the notification settings from the notification center which I normally don't because some of my messages are meant to be private. I think I just wasted time $800 for this watch.

There is nothing it doesn't do well

I have used this for just about everything but jumping out of a plane. The fitness tracking is simple and well laid out. I like having the music storage on the watch which lets me leave my phone behind. Glad that i spent the extra money for the sapphire version. It is my everyday watch and so far after six months with a fair amount of abuse it still looks great. I originally purchased the Felix 5xPlus and exchanged it for this one. The 5xPlus was WAAAYYY to big. The battery life on the 5 plus still lets me go four or five days between a charge. That is using it for one 3-5 mile run and one workout a day. With the smart notifications on the battery lasted of maybe half that though.

Great Watch but lack of maps and music interface

I bought this watch mainly for all the sports and GPS functionality, but unfortunately, there are no maps or any tracking routes for México and therefore, it only works as a smart watch that doesn’t even display the maps or GPS from my phone to cover the lack of installed maps. So, for that I am disappointed. I have the Garmin Navigator VI in my motorcycle amd works extraordinarily and I can’t understand why I can’t install or use thos same maps in my Fenix. I hope you can help me to turn around this poor experience please. Also, there’s no music integration with Spotify, Apple and Amazon Music which are the bigger and best music apps available.

Useless and pain in the head

Got this watch today from REI and have spent more than 4 hours. Even after many attempts to update the software which Garmin keeps asking, no luck to add a payment card. It just keeps showing update software despite updating multiple times using Garmin Express as it says. Another issue, it says the map NOT authenticated and contact the seller. Then it hanged for several minutes and no response so I had to do hard rebooting but still no luck on adding a card. In the first place why to deliver a watch which needs all this extra work even after paying so much. Never go for this watch. I am returning it tomorrow. Go for the Apple watch if want to make your life easy.

Better than Apple Watch

First off it’s durable. Also I don’t like watches that are so tethered to your phone that you constantly receive notifications and phone calls on it. I would just call that a phone on your hand. The Fenix is a watch and that is what I bought it for. Activity wise it is superior to apple. Also the ability to access maps without cell service as with the Apple Watch you have pay for cell service access all of its features. Which in return means the Apple Watch will end up costing you much more in the end. The Apple Watch relies on cell service to access maps. The Fenix does not. Great watch. Garmin killed it with the Fenix series.
