It's a nice watch, but GPS and pace are way off.

I bought the Fenix 5 about 3 weeks ago. The function and data are superior. The HRM was pretty accurate except for weight training, which I know it would be the issue. No big deal at all. I did multiple city and trail run and the GPS was not as good as I think it would be. It was 1 mile off in my 7 miles trail run (heavy forest). It clocked my pace at 38+ min/mile many times during my run (I am not that slow...). My free "map my run" phone app was more accurate than a $700 watch. However, it performs pretty well in a wide open area. If you decide to hike/run in a desert, this watch may work for you. I may have to return this. I am sad cause its so darn pretty, but this is not a good investment for me.

Fantastic Watch

I bought this on the 15th of April. I had to return the first piece because the buttons didn't all work. So this is the second piece I am using now. The watch is excellent. I used it on multiple hikes in Seattle and had great results with heart rate tracking, GPS, elevation and distance covered. I use this watch every day (and night) without charging for at least a week (after which I am down to about 55% battery). The notifications are excellent. The GPS is accurate. The step tracking seems pretty good too. I really never take it off. Things to keep in mind. When it comes to heart rate tracking with weight lifting, wrist based heart rates are not really on par with chest straps.

Excellent Watch

I bought this watch 2 weeks ago and I'm very impressed. I previously used the Fenix 2 which I loved with the exception of the battery life of that device. I would get at best a day in Bluetooth mode on the 2, but I've only charged my Fenix 5 once since I got it and it's still kicking. The all day HR is nice for actually seeing how well I'm sleeping. The run diagnostics are also great. It's difficult to improve upon things you aren't measuring and this watch measure everything.

Inaccurate for trail running

I love the look and feel and durability of this watch, and all of the features are great. However, GPS accuracy while trail running is very poor, underestimating pace and distance significantly. On the open road it's fine, but on windy trails in the trees, the distance for every run is underreported by anywhere from 7 to 20(!) percent, compared to others in my group runs, other Garmins worn at the same time (to test), and physical distance gauges. I thought maybe I got a bad one, but I've now gone through three different Fenix 5s and had the same results on all of them. I'm done.

Accurate and wears well

This watch tracks my runs through heavily forested parts of the trail with ease, something my Fenix3HR could never do. The slightly smaller size is still plenty large but wears much better. The sapphire edition also comes with two straps which is nice (the silicone band version anyways). Only had the watch for a few days but no complaints here.

Great watch for Tracking MTB rides

I have used a Garmin Edge attached to my bike stem for years to track my bike rides and upload to Strava. While it worked ok, it started to peter out on me during rides or go blank while uploading. I decided to spend the money and buy the Fenix 5 and glad I did. After initial setup, the watch immediately went to tracking my rides and automatically uploading them to Strava for review. It is so nice, not to have to waste battery life on my phone anymore or worry about cracking my edge that was on my stem during a crash (now I just raise my arm in the air during one). I was hesitant to drop the money on this watch, but am glad I did after a few weeks of use. On a side note, I have smaller wrist and was worried the watch would be too big based on checking out the Fenix 3, but am pleasantly surprised by the size.

Well worth the wait for this watch!

It think this is the best adventure watch available, with full featured activity and notification features, and it looks great too. The screen is easy to see (and always on unlike some activity-only watches). The functions and menus are easy to understand and easy to customize. The watch is stylish for a robust feature-rich outdoor adventure watch, and much better looking than the bulkier options in this category. I really love this watch. No touch screen or ability to respond to notifications, but that is okay with me.

A very Beautiful watch!

I bought this and returned it after 2 days, only because I was coming from an Apple Watch series 2, and I missed the true smart notifications. The Garmin Feni 5 sapphire is an amazing and beautiful watch. IF you have never owned a true smart watch you will be totally pleased with this watch. The GPS is spot on, the sleep tracking is as good as my fitbit. The smart features are okay, but not like a true smart watch. The Heart rate wrist monitor is okay for steady state cardio, but you will want to wear a chest strap if you are doing weights or pushups or anything like that nature. This is a great running, walking, hiking watch. If you are an outdoorsy type person, you will be very happy with this watch. The battery will last for days. So, get this if you want a beautiful, rugged GPS watch, that is nice enough to wear if you need to dress up. Do not get if you are looking for a true smart watch. Decide what is important for you. You will love how amazing this watch really is. To tell you the truth I wish I had never gotten the Apple Watch. Then I would have never known what was missing form this watch.

Upgraded from Fenix 2

I've had this watch for a couple of weeks now. I upgraded from a fenix 2... and it was well worth the money. The HR monitor is not always accurate, but it's nice not to have to run with a chest strap. It's good enough for me. It works great with auto sync to iphone. The display screen is a huge upgrade. Syncs location with GPS very quickly, within just a few seconds. I was often waiting for a minute or so with the fenix 2. Great watch.

Major Altimeter Problems - Beware

I purchased and returned 3 defective fenix 5 sapphire devices from REI since mid-January, 2018. All had persistent problems of the altimeter being inaccurate by orders of magnitude: 65,000+ feet and 32,000+ feet altitude readings and then down to 12,000 feet below sea level. These problems have also been reported in Garmin forums and the DC Rainmaker site. I have the latest firmware, have done re-calibrations, multiple resets and do not have additional watch faces and apps loaded. I am very familiar and experienced with devices that use barometric pressure for altitude measurements. I haven't seen problems like this with other Garmin devices with barometric pressure based altitude on such as Garmin Edge cycling computers and the Garmin Montana handheld GPS units. Same with 10+ year old Suunto watches. I'm using the fenix 5 in the same areas / use cases as the others devices. Since altitude is one of the most important measurements/metrics for my activities, I will not be trying another one (already had 3 with same problem) as I've lost confidence in the device and Garmin's ability to solve this problem. Garmin's customer support offered to replace the device even though they do not have a root cause for these problems and REI's customer service has been great with the returns. I'm very disappointed because I'm otherwise very impressed with the overall functionality and form of the fenix 5.
