Great Watch!
Garmin knocked it out of the park with the Fenix 5. I own several watches, and have alternated between an old Casio G-Shock and a Rolex Submariner for years. The Garmin is the best of both worlds, durable, good looking and loaded with useful features and data. Helps keep me motivated, update my Strava with just the push of a button, track my runs and swims etc. The only issue is the silicone band is under engineered. Mine ripped between eyelets after just 8 months of use. My other two watches both high and low end have never flinched in the 20+ years of use when it comes to the band. Garmin, you need to fix this issue. It is great that you engineered a very slick and well designed QuickFit system, but you failed when it came time to the specifications for the silicone band. I should not have to spend another $150 to get a metal band that won't break in under a year. Don't hesitate to buy the Fenix 5. Otherwise, a truly awesome and bombproof watch!
Absolutely amazing for runners
My Fitbit Charge HR finally died and although Fitbit was nice enough to offer me a discount on a new one I found myself really wanting the advanced running dynamics data Garmin devices are known for which led me to purchase the Fenix 5 Performer Bundle. The price concerned me a bit as with tax the total was $712, no small sum, but after thoroughly researching this device vs others I decided that I can expect years of use and a solid resale value so I might as well go with the best. After trying it out on a recent run I can say the GPS tracking is spot on, much more accurate than my phone, the data provided is outstanding, and the device is really easy to use and set up. The hrm-tri strap is already paired to the device so all you have to do is put it on, great experience. Even better the watch is great for all day use and doesn't look out of place at the office. Battery life with heavy use (from me exploring all the features) is down 9% after 24 hours which included a 5 mile run and 45 minutes of strength training. I highly recommend this watch for any athlete.
Makes My Training Even More Awesome
I went from the Fenix 3 to the Fenix 5, and love the little touches like: greater depth charts for training (whatever the sport), automated calibration after rowing indoors, on a treadmill, etc. and the heart rate always running. The screen is more clear, there are more apps for whatever sport you play, and text messages from my iPhone 7+ are significantly more legible.
More than I expected
Moving to this watch from a Sunnto Ambit 1 was incredible. I can’t compare the comparable models of Sunnto, i.e. Spartan Ultra but the stats and feedback via Garmin Connect and watch interface have been invaluable for training gains. The accuracy associated to the wrist heart rate monitor is not phenomenal especially with excercises involving “turbulent” movements, but this seems to be the standard across wrist based systems. The inclusion of the chest strep solves this issue and the wrist HR is more than adequate for most daily excercises.
Great Watch
I went from the 3HR and wanted the 5X but it was not in stock. The 5 is a great size and the display is much nicer than the 3HR. The interface is much cleaner and user friendly. The HR monitor feels so much better with the rounded bottom of the watch.
Bad for Ironman Training
I had to return the Fenix 5 after eighty days of use because of how inaccurate it was. I actually tested this in California and DC (both coasts). In CA it was pretty accurate, but moving to the East Coast with tall trees everywhere threw the whole system off. I’m not a picky person when it comes to accuracy, but this watch was particularly bad with run pacing, where it would read a 16:30/mile pace occasionally while I was running about a 10:00/mile pace, and I would watch my average lap pace jump by :30/mile instantaneously. Small fluctuations are expected but when pacing is that far off, you don’t know whether to chalk that mile up as a loss for accurate pacing or drop 2:00/mile just to get a good pace-entirely too frustrating if you need an accurate run pace over longer distances. The stress and HRV measurements were crazy off-I would get a high stress reading during a 20 minute nap or a low stress reading while I was freaking out over a stressful work situation. Garmin forums are littered with comments on the innaccuracy of the Fenix 5 and people switching them out for a Forerunner 935 instead, which apparently has the same internals but doesn’t suffer the same accuracy issues. The Fenix 5 is also heavy for a triathlon watch. If you don’t do regular triathlons or run races, this is probably still a great watch for you. Looks great with anything-formal or informal, and takes countless measurements that are really valuable to the every day user. If you really prize accuracy in your training though, I would not recommend it. Even if you live in a place like CA where it would be accurate, an East Coast Race could throw you off completely.
Doesn't work.
I was extremely excited to use this watch. I had friends who have had this watch and watched all the reviews online. I thought I would treat myself when it went on sale. This is less than 24 hours of owning the watch and I've already gotten the blue triangle. I had only logged in one 4 mile run. I want to love the watch and I want it to work like my it does for my friends. Wanting doesn't face the fact that it currently doesn't work... I will be returning it today. Way too much money to invest in an item that doesn't work.
Can’t deliver what it promises.
Great idea. Poor execution I’ve had many Garmin watches. This is the best in what it offers.... but worst in what it delivers. It cannot reliably track anything: sleep, heart rate and the like. I wear it constantly but it may record sleep or all day HR once ever 10-14 days. Rest is blank Yes I’ve tebooted, re-installed, powered up and down all the suggestions. I’ve spent hours tinkering. Yes I e got the settings right. I really wanted to love this. But fir $600 plus it’s just way to buggy and unreliable. I’ll be returning it and dumbing bsck diwn to a simpler model. The lap counting feature is cool. But it won’t tre k sleep, HR and other promised data on a reliable basis. I’m spending more time trying to get watch to work than on my sports. Alas I should have checked the Garmin forums first.
Bought the 3 loved it--- bought the 5
I have tried them all and spoke to friends about the estches they have as well. Bar none, regardless of the one bad review below his product is for real. I once put out a forest fire with helping the forest service triangulate my god position. The also test the altimeter and gps regularly to other devices --- they are very accurate. Love the interchange faces and course maker, downloadable apps, and watch faces. The controls are awesome as well
It stops work on the second day after I got it.
It's my first Garmin and I'm superexcieted about it. I got it yesterday. The price is not cheap but the quality of fenix 5 is really not worth the price. I love all the functions and the design. But it just suddenly stopped working. And the backlight is keep flashing. I even didn't start my first work out... So disappointed... I will return it...
