Perfect for my base camp
Every year my buddy and I hike to the top of this 1500' canyon. We rely on the water we pack to the top using our 6L dromedary bag with the 3-in-1 cap. We hang the bag upside down at our base camp. This cap reduces our water waste because we can easily meter out the right amount of water needed for a specific task. Towards the end of one of our trips the cap started to leak. All I needed to do was turn the bag right side up. When I got home I called MSR and they immediately sent me a new cap. The 3-in-1 cap saves us a trip back down the canyon, because if we head down, we won't be back until next year! I love MRS' customer service, thank you.
Longevity and practicality
I have used this consistently for 3.5 - 4 years. A small leak occurred and dripped for a couple of days and then a crack formed between the filling cap and the flip up nozzle. I need to find a replacement. I am so entirely satisfied with this product and it’s design. I feel that it is one of the best purchased I have ever made. It is very durable, for everyday use. I never have been very rough with it, but I am so glad to have it with me. It is such a practical and useful design that makes a difference in my life while traveling. Can you please tell me how I can receive a new cap for the pouring spout? Thank you. Awesome piece of gear.
It doesn't work with the hose!!!
I bought this ""REPLACEMENT CAP"" because my old one got lost in a hotel...It said in the package, compatible with the bags, dromedary etc...HOw come it does not fit the hose, that I bought only a year ago, that its meant to work with the bag???? Come on guys, if you want to make a better planet, update designs but make them compatible with the older accessories... Otherwise I am throwing on the trash an almost new hose just because you decided to make an update that does changed the size. The idea is to have [roducts that last for a long time so less waste and better environment...But this definitely disappointed me and made me feel sad.
Not compatible with old Hydration kits
I was excited about this cap because it finally had holes for attaching cord to keep the smaller cap attached to the larger screw lid whenever I attach my hydration hose. Unfortunately MSR didn't make the new thread size compatible with the old hose attachment. Pretty annoyed by it. It'd be a 5 star accessory if compatibility didn't negate the reason I bought it.
Included w/ DromLite - great cap
I ordered this at the same time as the MSR DromLite bag - couldn't tell from the pictures that the bag came with this cap. I really like the options, but I feel a little like Goldie Locks - looking for the flow that is just right. The smallest flow makes filling a water bottle a little tedious. The middle flow option has to be unscrewed, which is difficult and results in wasted water when the bag is hanging. Further complicating things, the cap for the middle option is attached by string so you dont lose it - I will probably end up cutting that string because re-attaching the cap with the string is difficult - especially with water gushing out. Still - this is better than 'just' a lid over the main opening.
Leaks
Poor design, when the lanyard connection piece is welded or molded during production the plastic shrinks under this spot and creates a concave spot on the inside of the cap where it seals against the bottle or bladder. This is where the leak occurs. The lanyard string between the two caps is two short and tangles every 1/2 turn. 12+ weeks for a warranty claim, cost more to send it back with current shipping prices than the product is worth. Not worth the hassle, or risk losing your water on the trail. Come on MSR you used to be better than this.
Adequate replacement but not as good as the original
I run a college outdoor program and we have about 30 Dromedary bags that use this cap. Over a dozen have developed a split in the medium sized cap or spout so I needed this replacement. Pros: It fits, is waterproof and has the same three openings. A big thank you to MSR for making the caps interchangeable with the standard Nalgene lid. Cons: Not as good as the old ones. The fine ridges around the big cap are too fine and don't give as much grip as the old, thicker ridges. The newly designed medium-sized cap is better because it has 'wings' that allow more grip. However the flimsy bit of string that connects it to the big cap just gets in the way and is annoying. The small opening remains the same; watertight but prone to getting stuck closed with age.
So Versatile
Whenever I have my MSR dromedary I make sure to take my 3-in-1 cap. I can use the largest opening to refill my dromedary, the medium for pouring into pots and pans or sometimes even a shower, but there are other attachments for that. And the smallest is great for drinking or when you need to accurately fill a measuring cup. The versatility of this simple yet ingenious cap is splendid. You could even use it on your wide-mouth water bottle as a versatile drinking lid.
All three options are handy
I've only had to buy two replacement caps in over ten years of owning three dromedary bags. All three pouring sizes are handy and makes the dromedary even more versatile. I have used them for refilling water bottles, putting out fires, hand wash, eye wash, a cool pillow on hot Summer nights, and a sad makeshift shower, among other things. Both the lids I had to replace were cracked, so it would be nice to pay a little more for something a little more durable.
Flip cap has problems
I purchased three 10 Liter bags with this lid. As you can see in the photo, the flip up spout has a little tab to make it easy to open. OK, it works too well. The little tab catches on stuff and opens way to easy. Just in load testing my kayak I have them open an number of times and noticed water pouring out. I need to find another solution due to the risk of losing valuable water. I consider the cap as designed unusable.
