Aether - Love this pack

Was at REI over this weekend and purchased this pack. Currently using a Kilty 90 Redcloud but it is sized a bit larget so thought I would give this a try. Walked with 40 pounds at Devils Lake for 8 miles and this Aether pack fit like a charm. Loved the way it hip belt felt wrapped around my waste and gave perfect weight distribution. This is my first Osprey pack and I can truly say we are going to be best friends. Only rated a 4 due to lack of exterior pockets. My Kilty has 2 large ones along the sides but this one only has the water bottle holders, stuff sack on front, and 2 additional on top. This is really a 4.9 rating. Feels extremely durable. Took another 4 mile walk today with more added weight and it seemed to feel better today than yesterday. Next up Isle Royale in May. Highly recommend this pack. Also I like the full frontal zipper for access to internal items. Osprey hydration 72 liter was a bonus bit haven't utilized yet nor the internal smaller "Go bag". Thanks REI for talking me into this pack while at the store in Madison.

Amazing Backpack. So comfortable.

After doing research and talking to the very helpful REI associates, I decided to buy this pack. Our first trip together was a group biking trip in Monte Cristo Washington. My Osprey held a lot of gear, and after four miles of getting on and off a bicycle, I still felt like my shoulders were not carrying anything. On our return trip a member of our party got sick, so my pack took on even more gear. This is the most comfortable backpack I have ever owned. The day pack is a very cool feature, and I hope to have many adventures in the future with this pack.

It Makes Half Of Your Pack Weight Disappear

Tried other packs, even the 2016 version and there's no comparison in comfort. I'm 5'8" with a 17" torso (I had to accept that the S was what I needed mainly due to load lifter fit)) and I'm still playing with the adjustments after a 30lb. day on the trail. It is very fit-sensitive and at one point I could not feel the hipbelt. Lift the pack by the top grab strap and feel how much lighter it seems when it's on your back. Love the zipper pull rings. Hate the tight side pockets (Listen to the crunch of the Smart Water bottle when the pack is full). If not for the mandatory bear canister and Rocky Mountain clothing, I would have gone with the 60 liter. Will use the reservoir in a smaller pack. I use a 3L Camelbak and let the tube hang out of the top. It's just easier that way. Hipbelt pockets are fine as I store lots of small items in them. Four Stars but the comfort makes it Five.

Backpacks have come a long way!

Just recently returned to backpacking. Think external frames, sierra cups, and Insulite sleeping pads, lol. I like that you can get all, or most of your gear to stow away inside the pack rather than having stuff strapped to the outside of the pack . . . unless you'd like to strap some some stuff to the outside. Then, there are places to do that. There is a set of vertical straps provided on the outside of the sleeping bag compartment, you can fit some things under the horizontal compression straps, there's a couple sets of 'loops' on top of the 'Daylid' that would allow you to ad some straps to put something on top, there are two sets of 'ice axe' loops on the back of the bag, and a set of trekking pole loops. Inside the bag, there is an adjustable/removable barrier between the sleeping bag compartment, and the main compartment. There is also a compression strap on the inside near the top of the main compartment, and a nice draw string system to close things up at the top of the main compartment. You can access the main compartment from the top, or there is something of a "J" shaped zipper on the face of the bag in case you want to access something in that area. There is also a pretty decent sized 'stretchy pocket' on the face that is big enough to stuff some lightweight footwear into (or something similar). If you stuff the main compartment pretty full, it does make the side pockets pretty tight, but you can get a 32 oz. Nalgene in from the top of them. There is a slit about half way down the side pockets that could conceivably let you put your Nalgene in and allow you easier access to it while wearing the pack, but it was tough for me to do so. Younger more flexible types may have better luck there. I used one of the side pockets to hold my tent poles, and the other to hold a rain jacket. All in all, and using a number of small stuff sacks to organize things, it was not difficult to make this an 'a place for everything, and everything in it's place' sort of pack. That makes for a nice clean looking rig that is very functional. The hydration sleeve is definitely inside the pack. If you have stuff inside the main compartment, it will be difficult to slide a full bladder all the way down into the sleeve unless you remove a few things. Once it is in there, there is a strap to hold it up, and the magnetic tube holder on the chest strap is a nice touch to hold the tube within easy reach while hiking. I did notice a 'plasticky' taste from the bladder if the water isn't consumed right away. Osprey recommends treating it once using lemon juice/water (google is your friend) to remediate that situation. As for the fit of the pack, I would implore you to get measured properly, and then to follow the fit guidelines. Being over 6'4" and north of 250 lbs, I was surprised to learn that a large would fit me best (my son is at least as tall as I am, and he turned out to fit into a medium in a 2016 Aether 70). To carry a load properly and comfortably, I need to cinch the hip belt down pretty tight so it doesn't slip down off the tops of my hip bones. Finding out how to adjust the rest of the straps each time you put the pack on is also important. If you still have the bottom compartment filled with something, it can more or less stand up on it's own, but once you remove the contents of that compartment, you'll need to lean it against something to keep it upright. All things considered, I can't really find a good reason to ding Osprey for the design and execution of this pack. It seems to be versatile, well made with good materials, and well thought out. Between the Osprey Almighty Guarantee, and REI's return policies, I felt like I could buy with confidence and know that I would end up with the right bag.

Didn't get a big overview of the pack before I bought it, but when I discovered the top pack turns into a day pack, I was excited. Lots of storage, lots of different access. simply loving it. carry my girlfriend's gear plus my own in here with no trouble.

Sturdy and well-designed

I've had this pack for several years and have taken it all over the place. No pack is perfect, but this comes close. With a 30 lb-plus load, I can wear it for hours, even on steep trails. Belt and straps are comfortable (given that you are lugging things on your back), easy to adjust and don't slip. Nice features like the oversize web pockets, gear straps and removable top. Best of all, it's tough -- so far it shows virtually no signs of wear.

2017 redesign promises improvements over 2015/16s

My son and I both purchased the 2017 Aether 70 AG to replace our 2016 and 2015 models. The new 2017 waist belt feels and looks stronger than the 2016 and we like the day pack better than the waist pack of the earlier models. I loaded it up with 40 lbs. in the show room and the Aether felt better than the 2016 model. Planning a trip this summer to see how it performs on the trail.

Great weight distribution

I have yet to put this pack through a few trips but I have no doubt it will perform better than any pack I've had before. I've fully packed this pack at home and it has plenty of space for everything a hiker would need for a week long trip. What sold me was when I was in REI. The sales associate and I put about 20 lbs in the pack, fit it to me, and I wore it in the store for 15 minutes. While I was wearing the pack I thought "yep, feels like I'm wearing a pack". But once I took the pack off, the pack felt substantially heavier in my arms. Not only does the pack put all the weight on your hips, it can be synched way down for a small weekend trip's worth of gear. Mine came with a hydration bladder, and the awesome day pack. Highly recommend this pack to anybody that's in the market.

excellent pack

Was trying to decide between the Aether 70 and 60. The 70 was a little much but...It has a good access zipper to the main compartment. The 60 has a side zipper which seems almost an after-thought and not nearly as usable. Also the 70 has bottom compression straps which can be run inside the mesh side pockets, the 60 does not. I got the 70. Both compress down extremely well, and when carrying a light load it doesn't look like a 70. Also for shorter overnight trips I take off the top compartment which contains the dayback (very nice feature) making the pack weigh in at just a little over 4lbs. (I have a small). Both put the weight as close to your back as possible, and this combined with the extraordinary hip belt system make this the most comfortable pack I've ever owned. I tried on a lot of packs before buying, and the Aether was in a whole other class when it came to comfort. Since it holds the weight closer than the Atmos, I traded off a little sweat for better weight distribution. Take the time to get a really good fit. Ospreys seem to run large. I'm 5'11 , 160# and have a "small"pack with "medium" straps and hipbelt and it fits perfect.

Great pack

Great pack, the fit and finish is top notch. I would have wished the pack came with a rain fly. I appreciate having the hydration bladder included. The adjustability of the pack to the user is excellent. I have enough room to carry all my supplies for a 3-4 day back country adventure
