Choose a fabric type 

• Wool retains warmth when wet and is naturally odor resistant. It breathes more easily and wicks moisture from your feet. 

• Synthetic blends like nylon, polyester or acrylic are ideal for those with sensitive skin or are allergic to wool. These fabrics trap warmth and wick moisture. 

How much cushioning do you want?  

• No cushioning: Works well with performance boots that have a tighter fit or for those who want to feel the terrain underfoot. 

• Light cushioning: Typically padded at the shins with minimal or no cushioning on the balls of the feet; reinforced toes and heel are common. 

• Medium cushioning feature added padding for warmth and to absorb impact. Ideal for cold conditions or snowboarders with loose fitting boots.  

• Heavy cushioning: Great for extreme winter environments or low-intensity winter activities like ice fishing or riding a snowmobile. 

Length 

Most socks for skiing and snowboarding go up to the knees to help protect from shin bang. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers may want shorter length socks. 

How long will you be on the trail?

• Hiking shoes: day hikes or ultralight backpacking
• Hiking boots: multi-day treks with heavier loads

What upper is right for you?

• Leather: water- and abrasion-resistant, durable
• Synthetic: lightweight, break in easily, dry faster

Look at the lugs

• Deep, thick lugs improve grip
• Wider lug spaces sheds mud and offer good traction

Check crampon compatibility
Mountaineering and winter hiking may call for crampons. Narrow your search for boots with crampon compatibility.

What kind of biking will you be doing? 

• Road cycling shoes contain the stiffest soles and cleats that connect to clipless pedals for maximum pedaling efficiency. They're not designed for extended walking. 

• Mountain bike shoes provide added traction on rugged trails, with various designs to work with clipless pedals or flat pedals.  

• Casual bike shoes are good for recreational riders or commuters who want more comfortable, stylish options with bike-friendly features like stiffer soles or clipless pedal compatibility. 

Finding the right fit 

• Choose bike shoes that fit comfortably from the start. A bike shoe that is uncomfortable at first is not likely to become less so. 

• Fit tip: Make sure your toes have enough room to wiggle slightly, your arches feel snug and supported and your heel doesn’t slide up and down. (Feeling some heel slippage while walking is normal.) 

What kind of shoe closure is right for you? 

• Laces will get you the most customizable fit and comfort but get wet and dirty in inclement conditions. 

• Hook-and-loop straps offer quick closure and are more likely to stay secure than laces and usable in muddy, wet conditions. More straps mean a more customizable fit. 

• Notched cam straps with buckles provide the greatest clamping power and security, at a higher price. 

• Dials/ratcheting cable laces deliver an adjustable fit with a quick-release system.
