I have over 25 years experience hiking, backpacking, climbing, ski mountaineering, etc...and spent ten years in the infantry. I have spent a fair share of time under loads in various conditions. Over that time I have worn everything from jungle boots to plastic boots. I bought these boots, and sized them true to size after trying a size up and a size down. I broke them in for about 4-5 months in regular routine use. I spent 8 days in these on the Wonderland Trail around Rainier, and never had a single issue. They held up to all conditions including early season snow and a hundred miles of use and abuse. They are virtually new still, and feel as good as the day I purchased them. Highly recommend this boot.
I never thought a pair of boots could make such a difference. I replaced my Patagonia hiking boots(Nomad GTX) with the Tower Treks and am amazed at the improvements. Not only are the Garmonts unbelievably light, they are perfectly supportive and the rubber sole grips to rock with ease. Can't wait to climb more 14ers with these!
This boot made me a Garmont faithful. Their products are legit and this is a solid boot. Idk about the lightweight description. It's got some heft which is forgiven because it's durable. Worth every penny in my opinion. Strongly recommend trying a pair on and testing them before purchasing. My first pair ran larger than what I typically wear; went from an 8.5 to an 8. I eventually wore out the backside of the heel after 3yrs. Also make sure to break it in before any long serious trips; it takes a while. Happy to see REI is carrying smaller sizes now.
I bought these boots for a season of backcountry trails and ranger work in Washington’s North Cascades. I’d been searching for a boot that was burly enough to handle trail work as well as 10-mile days hiking in steep, rocky terrain with heavy loads, but not extremely stiff and heavy. I found it! The overall quality of materials and construction is very high. I’ve found them to be suitable for light mountaineering as well (they edge well and feel great kicking in steps on snow). My one gripe is about fit. They definitely run at least a half size small. I normally wear a 12/12.5 and needed 13’s (same in Salewa boots, another German brand). Also, the toe box is quite snug, which I like for a precise feel, but may not work for everyone.
I have guided big game hunts for over 20 yrs in Arizona and New Mexico and have used numerous types of top of the line boots and have to say I've been nothing but impressed with these boot, there very comfortable and in the middle of the monsoon season stayed dry. I have guided 3 elk hunts and 1 mule deer hunt since I have had these boot and have 3 elk hunt left to do and these boots only get more comfort ! only con on these boots I have is I wear a size 8 ended up ordering a 9 which is not a big deal and folks say on some reviews "needs no breaking in " bs break em in before you do any hiking people !!!
Hiking & climbing 45+ years, this is bar none my favorite mountaineering boot. Light weight but very supportive. High top, but I have substandard ankles. Waterproof & breathable. I have now maybe half-dozen Garmont boots. Their lasts just seem to ft my feet. No problems 'breaking in'--there wasn't any....
Purchased these for use in anticipation of hiking some sections of the AT with intent to climb Kilimanjaro later next year. Surprised that a technical boot of this nature could be so comfortable and so supportive above the ankle. Great stability as well, waterproofness has proved to be excellent as well.
The boots looks nice. True to other comments I had to return the boots for a half size larger than my normal boot size for a comfortable, good fit. My greatest concern is after a week long, cross country, backpacking trip above timber line on the high Sierra Nevada granite, a few dime size chunks of the Vibram sole lugs have torn off under the balls of the foot and heel corners. At this rate the boots will not last more than a couple of trips. This is not the boot materials quality I expected for the price.
I bought this boot online because the local store did not have them. I wore them around the house for some weeks, then did 4-8 mile hikes with good elevation gain, maybe 5 times. They supported my feet great, though I had a little skin irritation; but then I did a 14 mile hike, again with good elevation gain, and my big toes were jamming into the too small boot on the long final descent causing toe damage. Bless REI, they took the boots back. My lesson learned was when the sales rep had me take out the boot liner and stand in it--he demonstrated nicely that my feet completely filled the liner, and that the boot was too small (my usual size); I was not able to determine the fit by touch with the rigid toe box. I was afraid to try the bigger size which they did not have, and bought a pair of Sportiva's which worked great for me.
I tried on pretty much every boot in this price point at the Seattle store, plus Hanwags somewhere else. With every other boot I was asking if they came in a wide, which most do not. I didn't need a wide with these Garmonts. The toe box was wide enough to let my toes splay out to their natural position. I also appreciated the flex of the upper due to the Schoeller fabric in the tongue and upper ankle area. To me this is a nice counterpoint to the very stiff sole for hiking comfort. I felt like I could walk all day in these boots when I tried them on in the store. They just fit my foot really well. So far I have done one 7 mile hike in the Olympics and I am really happy with the comfort and performance. My feet felt great all day. It was a rainy day and the soles had ample grip on the wet rocks. I also appreciated the high ankle support. I can tell these boots are only going to get better with time as they conform to the shape of my foot. Looking forward to hiking, scrambling and light mountaineering in these boots.
