I hunt in severe terrain at very high elevations and I have been looking for a boot to replace my Meindl's. There was a study performed by the US Army Research Institute in 1984 that determined that weight carried on your feet takes 4.7 to 6.4 times as much energy to move at a given pace than weight carried on your torso. Since most boots designed for extreme terrain tend to weigh a ton (generally 4.5 to 5 lbs per pair ) I have been searching for an alternative. Each of these boots weigh 15 ounces less than my current hunting boots. That's an almost 2-pound savings and that is huge! That's like taking 10 lbs out of my backpack. Couple that with REI's generous return policy that allows you to actually take these boots outside and still be able to return them (alot of retailers don't) and we have a winner! I thought the boots were a bit too tight but the store clerk thought the fit was about right and suggested I hike in them first before sending them back (size needed not available in store ) and I am so glad he did because he was right and I was not! The boots fit great and felt great on the trail. I need and want a really stiff boot to be able to bite into slick shale and rock above timberline and these do the trick! I am looking forward to taking them to Alaska in August!
