Great potential - but awful in the end
I have struggled with this watch since day 1. Accuracy, through 3-4 updates (now on v4.0) is utterly terrible. Altitude, terrible method of function and wildly inaccurate and you need to do to much research to keep up on keeping your altitude set correctly. This is a trail specific watch that is utterly horrible on trails. Mileage, pace, distance, altitude, speed, GPS tracks are terrible. On top of all of this, trying to get reliable sync - I would sometimes have to spend 20-30 minutes to get it to sync proper. And maybe, it would never sync so I would have to try another day. And, wifi never worked for me. And then, suddenly, one day, it did. And then, suddenly, one day, it stopped. And today, it killed off - for no reason - 8 days of workout data while trying to sync said data. I am an electronics junky and I have never dealt with such a frustrating, unreliable, unpredictable, inaccurate device such as this. For a "flagship" device - one that touts off road and trail usage - you CANNOT count on it if you rely on accuracy of data. If you do not care about true legit accuracy and proper data and results, go for it. Think I am exaggerating? Visit the Garmin Fenix 3 forums and see HUNDREDS of posts about the issues I mention here by people all over the world.
Holy Cow! I Love this watch!
First off. Love REI. They had the watch that nobody else did, and they shipped it fast! I'm fairly new to running. I've run about 400 miles since 10/2014. I've been using my phone to track my runs, but wanted a watch to give me more data, like cadence, temp, and heart rate. The Fenix 3 is far better than i imagined it would be. its a gorgeous watch. the buttons are intuitive. Very easy to navigate. love the step counter and sleep metrics. battery life is great. I charge it when I'm in the shower for about 5 minutes, and the charge hasn't ever dropped below 90%. GPS connects much faster than other reports I have read. Love it! Highly recommend for runners wanting a great looking everyday wear watch.
Much improved over Fenix 2
Bought this in Feb '15. It was a little quirky at first but with a couple of firmware updates it appears to be very solid. I have used for tracking skiing, monitoring bike rides including reading power meter, running and hiking. GPS + GLONASS much quicker than the FENIX 2 which only had GPS. Accuracy is reasonable. Most used feature however is Activity Tracking and I have been satisfied with it prompting me to get of my duff. It gives a decent impression for sleep quality especially when comparing with multiple entries on Garmin Connect. Works well using bluetooth with my Moto-X and syncing with my Macbook Pro. Pretty much exactly the watch I was looking for.
Has great potetntial
The watch has great potential. It fits great, looks great, pairs great with my Iphone 6. However, the GPS accuracy is pretty pathetic right now. I know others are having major issues as well. My biggest problem, and I have tested and retested with multiple other settings ect, and everytime I run with it it is horribly off on the distance. I have run with my Garmin 310xt (which is always been very accurate) and there are not even in the same ballpark. 7.5 mile run. 310xt is 7.5 miles. F3 was 6.1 miles. 13 mile run on 310xt , F3 has it at 11.7 miles. Hoping that Garmin has some updates that fix this. Otherwise its going back for good. The data it provides is more or less useless at this point for me.
Terrible accuracy on trails
This watch looks great, has a ton of great features but fails in an epic way with a task that should be its core competency. On Sunday my friend and I went on 22.5 mile trail run, he was using the Garmin 910XT I was wearing the Fennix 3. We noted that on many miles the Fennix 3 recorded our average pace at a rate of 1 to 2 minutes slower then the 910, the 910 seemed about right. At the end of the run there was over a 2 mile difference between the 2 devices, the Fennix was hopelessly off. The next day I returned to the trail to try again, once again the watch performed poorly with accuracy and calculated my total distance short by nearly 2 miles. Its a GPS trail watch that does not work on a trail. At least as of now.
Great all around watch
Have had the watch for a couple of months now. I am not a triathlete but a casual runner, biker. GPS for both work great. I bought the Garmin bike sensor for indoor riding. Also use it to get notifications of incoming call and texts from my iphone. Very happy with the purchase. Pros: - battery lasts almost 2 weeks with some short runs using GPS and activity tracking on - have not had any problems with bluetooth connectivity to phone - love being able to use different watch faces - notifications vibrate the watch even before it does on the phone Con: - minor con is the watch face is tough to see in dim lighting without backlight. but considering the battery life it is a worth while sacrifice
Really enjoy using this watch
I've had the Fenix 3 for several weeks and so far it's great! The activity tracking features coupled with Garmin Connect work really well, and really give some nice insight into daily and weekly trends. I've also used the GPS for mapping trail runs in hilly terrain, both for recreational weekend runs and a couple of races. The GPS mile marker notifications were within a few yards of the race mile markers, so I'd say my experience with accuracy seems to be far better than what some reviewers have reported. I also really enjoy the ability to install different apps and watch faces. Overall, two thumbs up for the Fenix 3.
Not ready for market
I was really looking forward to getting and using this watch. I have been using an Ambit 2 for a number of years and thought this was a better upgrade than the Ambit 3, oh was I wrong. Pros: Vibration Color Screen Step Tracker Sleep Tracker Cons: Recovery advisor not accurate at all Does not import into Firstbeat with accurate data as advertised TE much to high. GPS twice the time of Ambit 2 to get fix Navigation clunky For anyone wanting this for actual accurate feedback from training look elsewhere. Possible Garmin can fix with firmware updates but not a good training tool as is. At least I purchased at REI and can return.
Simply Awesome!!
This watch is awesome!!! There are a few little things (auto-time update only occurs via GPS lock, sleep metrics are lacking) I would like to see improved, but that's the case with everthing tech in my world. The F3 is a bit big for smaller wrists if planning to wear all the time. Very highly customizable for many activities. Garmin Connect is constantly improving. I use this watch for everything! I don't believe there's a better all-around fitness watch on the market today. Certainly not one for me personally. I've tried many; e.g. Fitbit Charge, Charge HR, Surge, Vivofit, & Polar Loop.
Marked improvement over Fenix 2
I have had the watch now for two weeks and have used it on a bike ride and two runs (in addition to general playing around with it). The GPS accuracy is very good with the watch with GLONASS turned on. The phone connectivity (to an iphone) is very slick and works as marketed. I'm still learning the new features, but overall, the watch is a major step forward compared to the Fenix 2. Key improvements made since the Fenix 2: Fit - This watch feels very natural and balanced on my (male) wrist. Style - The watch is beautiful. Honestly, the Fenix 2 was functional but ugly. This watch can pass for daily use without any issue Connectivity - Uploads via bluetooth are much faster. I haven't tried the wifi yet, but I'm very pleased with how well it works in conjunction with an iphone. Screen - Crisp and legible in a variety of conditions. The backlight works very well and the screen can easily be read while jogging at night. Connect IQ - lots of potential for the future and just enough apps now available to demonstrate promise. Minor things: The recovery advisor takes a few runs with a HRM to get to know you. The VO2 max estimate, which appears to drive the recovery time, slowly adjusts with multiple runs. Altimeter - It seems that the watch benefits from calibration. The watch has an easy process to do it, but I don't know yet if this need will go away as the watch learns more locations. Navigation - The watch feels more sports like than hiking / orienteering, but that will suit my needs fine. Instructions - Someone needs to develop a "Fenix 3 for dummies" book. The instruction manual is sort of a joke. There needs to be much more detailed instructions available to maximize the functionality of the watch. Overall, it is pricey, but it is a very nice, functional fitness device.
