These are excellent boots!

These boots are worth the price tag. they have superior construction, thick vibram soles, and an overall bombproof feel. my feet feel GREAT in them. Personally I scorn the reviewer(s) who write of this--or any--boot's inferiority because it didn't fit that person's feet. You'll see this sort of comment in nearly every worthwhile boot out there, whether it be Asolo, Lowa, etc. It seems people don't know some boots run narrower than others. Please note that: 1) not all boots are made for the same width of human foot, and 2) Danner boots are made for wider feet. Occasionally you'll see reviews from customers who wrote that the boot didn't fit right, and they give it a poor rating when actually the boot construction and performance merits a higher rating. The people at REI are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about matching feet and boot widths--you should ask. I'm an overweight trucker and I use these for exercise and general mobility. The ankle support is phenomenal--even going downhill, my feet don't slip forward inside the boot--and the assurance these boots give of every step is pure comfort. These Danner Crater Rim boots took a month of casual usage to break them in, because the uppers are stiff and made of thicker leather than boots that run at $150. Those less-expensive boots break in faster, yet they also wear out quicker, usually because they're paired with a less-expensive sole. Not these boots! Again, they're very well made (on the inside too!) with high-quality materials, and I am so very glad for the chance to rave about them.

I really want to love these boots...

There is so much to love about these boots: they are waterproof, warm, made in the USA, and stick to rock like nobody's business. But the overly wide heel ruins them for me. Seriously, when you look at the boot from the top, it is wider at the heel than mid-foot. Whose feet are built like this? Even after an extended break-in period, and trying myriad lacing schemes, I can't stop the heel slip. Another reviewer cites the same issue of not being able to secure his ankle in the boot, and attributes the problem to the lacing system. I agree, but don't think the lacing would be such an issue were it not for the overly wide heel. Otherwise, an all around great boot.

Solid boot for hard trails

I have the military version of this boot and have found it to be a solid performer. I have used it on the AT with a heavy pack in the wet and boulder hopping, too. Great grip and ankle support! The only difference between the military version "Combat Hiker" and the Crater Rim is use of a top hook for lacing the boots, whereas my boot has the standard eyelet. For those having a heel float issue, try using a heal cup pad, found at most large pharmacies in the foot care area. I have duck feet, narrow heel and wide forefoot, so I get the issue. Everybody has a different foot, so unless you can get custom made boots, they all are a compromise. This one works for me and the bonus is that some keeps a job in the US. I like neighbors with jobs!

Amazing

I took these on a two day hike right out of the box. Your supposed to break them in but I had no problems out of them. I got the Wides and I beilive that was the best choice seeing how some say the boot runs narrow. They are extremly comfortable and perfectly water proof. I love these boots!

Crater Rim seems like a bomb proof boot.

I use this boot for hiking on rough trails and scrambling in the mountains. They have excellent support of feet and ankles. They work well for me on both steep uphill or downhill. As a bonus the traction is very good. I haven't had them long enough to attest to their durability, but am quite confident they are going to last a long, long time. Now is not the right season but I am sure they would work well with crampons or snow shoes.

I like American made goods.

I've owned these boots for almost a month and have already put over 100 miles on them. Both heels are showing signs of wear as the hiking here in Sitka is quite rocky. My biggest complaint about these boots is the lacing system. It has 6 eyelets and only 1 hook at the top. It's very hard to get them snug at the ankle. If Danner would change the lacing system I would keep these in a heartbeat. As presently configured I will probably bring them back in to REI when I'm in Anchorage in January 2014.

Better than i expected.

I've been using Danner Pronghorns for about 8 years now and when i saw these in REI I just had to give them a go. I love the way they fit! I have an average foot and i'm an 8.5 US mens size. I ordered the size 9 and they fit perfect (i normally get size 9 running shoes, don't like my feet crammed). The grip on these is just phenomenal. I'm constantly going off trail and climbing less than stable ground. These were not slipping even an inch! The comfort is phenomenal. It took me very little to break them in. In fact, after one day of around the house and daily errands, these boots were molded. I did treat the leather with mink oil just because i love the extra protection but they were fine as is. My only gripe with these boots is that they don't get real tight around the ankle very easily. It takes a little extra effort to get that area tight because of the eyelid style laces. I wish canner would have more hook style lacing but this is not enough for me to downgrade the boot. I also wish it was a little taller as I use it mainly for hunting, but as a hiking boot this is phenomenally comfortable. I've got at least 100 miles already on mine and they feel just perfect!

love these boots

Just got back from a week in the High Sierra. These are the best boots I have had in many years. I am an older guy and a bit tender footed. These boots provide good protection to the soles of your feet so you don't feel the rocks too much. Good ankle support, durable, waterproof, light weight, great traction. I am an EE width and they fit really well. Break in time was minimal. Other reviewers didn't like the lacing system but I found it to be fine, just takes a bit of getting used to. The lack of hooks low on the sides of the ankle is a plus - avoids snagging/damaging hooks on rocks Much better than any of the lighter style hiking boots; would be good for hiking, peak bagging and backpacking. Made in the USA - nice job Danner!

Solid boot with flex

Searched high and low for a high quality boot that would last and fit my medium width feet right. These are awesome. Made in Oregon. Reinforced in all the right places. True to size and worth the price.

Great boots but beware of a very small toe box

Bought these boots for hiking in Utah and local hiking in the Appalachians. The quality of these boots is great. Just like well made boots of the 70's and 80's. The soles really grip the rocks like nothing else and deliver unprecedented traction. The only problem I had with them (and its a big problem) is the small toe box these boots have. If you have absolutely perfect feet you will not have a problem with these boots. They are well made and will serve you well for many years to come. But if you have broken a toe in the past or your feet are no longer uniform, expect abrasions and blisters.
