Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Screenhouse for Kayaking I purchased this to take kayaking in SE Alaska in Misty Fjords Wildernes in 2013. We were very happy to have this along as the noseeums were terrible. Three of us sat in the 9 x 9 ft screen house for Breakfast and dinner and cooked in there and visited. Absolute pleasure with no bugs. When it rained the water ran off nicely and did not come through the mesh screen. We strung it between two trees and used treaking poles to support the other two corners. I am going to take this anytime I go where the bugs will be serious. Easy to set up and take down and the size of the packed unit was not too big. Easily fit in my sea kayak. The sides are easily bent in with a wind so you need to stake it down or put something on the mesh to hold out in a wind. Great product. I also have the Nemo 12 x 12 tarp which we used to cover our tents- also a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two thumbs up We were very impressed with the design and quality of the Nemo Bugout. The way the tarp is angled and the height of the screen varied accordingly gives the ability to actually use the entire footprint without worrying about water being able to drain off. Set up is easy, assuming you have enough well-placed trees to work with. Black screen is great, kept the bugs out and still allows you to see out. Seems to be very well made. This will absolutely be a staple on all our BWCA trips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it's weight (& it's price!) We purchased the 9' X 9' two years ago, and it has proven itself time and time again. First, it's easy to put up and very versatile in how you can put it up with the option of using any combination of trees, ropes, poles, hiking sticks, and stakes. Also, the zippers are versatile to enter unzipping from top or bottom. It's great shelter from sun, rain, and bugs. We have used it backpacking ( a little heavy, but it can make the difference between sitting outside or hiding in the tent from the bugs), on the beach for shade, kayaking, and car camping. It's not super tall, but we have alite mayfly chairs that sit low so it's not a problem. We don't ever want to be without it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great flexibility! I was looking for a convertible shelter/screen room with lots of flexibility and found it with this! As with the minimalist shelters, it can be strung up many different ways to provide wind or sun protection, but the screen sides add that extra protection or even a bit of privacy that's nice to have sometimes. With the different stake loops on the screens, you can secure it tight at many heights. Staking down the screens also helps keep it from flapping too much in heavy winds. The screens zip at the ends, and tie up in loops in three places on each side. The screens don't have to be all down or all up once. The only (minor) complaint is that the screens don't secure up as tight and tidy as the advertising photos show, but they're not bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT! Took this to the Boundary Waters in June. Bugs were bad and this was a dream to have. Set up and take down are super easy. This shelter kept us and our equipment dry during rain showers. Netting also helped minimize the wind while inside. It was hard for me to spend the money on something like this, but once I had it and used it, I was completely satisfied! It was a must have on our trip!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One potential problem Bought for the BWCA and it is easy to set up and keeps the bugs and rain out. DO NOT, however set it up with the long center rope between trees. I did and my second night out and a windy storm blew in. It lifted the tarp like a parachute and since the netting was staked down it ripped it all up. REI took it back but no longer had the big ones so I could not replace it. I would have happily done so. One other small thing. If it was hot and I was looking for a cool breeze it surprised me how much it cut the breeze down. Good product and a great place to shop.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does keep the bugs out. I've given this shelter both an easy and difficult to set up. When setting it up among trees or with assistance it is very easy to do. On the occasion when you need to set this up by yourself and don't have the luxury of nearby trees (or sufficient rope) it's quite a handful to get this shelter erected. That said it's quite spacious, more than enough room to cover a picnic table and still have room to walk around it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed Spent two weeks in the White Mountains in NH. Rained, rolled in rain, and reset in rain. Worked well after figuring out the correct setup. Must be snug on both ends and absolutely needs the sides propped up by something. Some tables are too large for good coverage.

Could this possibly fit directly over a 2016 Subaru Outback as a makeshift tent while sleeping in the vehicle?

Asked by: Kathiis
It is possible it could fit if the car is oriented diagonally inside the shelter. It's not recommended though because it would be a very close fit and is not the shelter's intended use.

Does REI plan to stock the 9x9 again, or is it just the 12x12? I don't want the added weight and space, but you haven't had the 9x9 in quite a while.

Asked by: BWCATom
As of March 2017, we do not have any plans to restock this shelter in the 9 x 9 size.

Can this be set up without the poles if I have plenty of trees around to tie off all four corners?

Asked by: GimmeShelter
Yes, it is possible to set the Bugout Shelter up by tying it up to trees without poles.

So...does this come with poles of any kind for the setup? Thanks!

Asked by: forloveoflife
The Bugout Shelter does not include poles. For setup, trekking poles or tarp poles are great additions.

What length/height poles would you need if you did not have two trees to string the tarp between? Thanks!

Asked by: tvcrider
The Bugout Shelter is very versatile and works with any trekking poles or adjustable tarp poles that are up to 7 feet tall.

The specs it has a say 9x9 footprint. But, could this be set up in a slightly smaller space, say 9x8? Are there rigid poles that force it to the full 9x9, or can it be hung flexibly?

Asked by: RoaldEuller
The NEMO Bugout shelter does not include any poles. In theory, you could hang the shelter in a smaller space, but it is not recommended because the tarp would sag significantly.
