Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Stuff My BF sampled this at REI and loved it. It was too spicy for me so I got something else. He is a big eater, but felt satisfied by the serving size, which usually isn't the case. This definitely has a kick to it, so as the other reviewer mentioned, no need to worry about flavor here. My BF gives this four stars, but I should take one away because of the horrible gas he had after eating it. This meal will linger. You've been warned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tastes like it should! As expected of a vindaloo, this has some heat although not excessive. I like spicy dishes and have had vindaloo in southeast Asia that could make me cry from heat and joy. If one does not typically enjoy spicy dishes, he/she should steer clear of this meal. (That is advice, not condemnation of the person or the product.) If one is accustomed to vindaloo, then this is a good choice for something different. We heated some roti in a pan to serve with it while the packet was rehydrating (as backpacking meal.) Chapati or naan would work as well. While I was very pleased with the product, my wife observed that the chicken pieces were rather small (potato were small as well). While I agree with her assessment, this was more of a texture issue rather than flavor. Our children both found the flavor to be good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you like Indian food you will love it I eat Indian Curries frequently so I was excited to see this for sale. Add the prescribed amount of water and wait 15 minutes or so and eat! This is a two serving meal, but after back packing you will eat the whole thing to yourself. Tastes great, has a good kick to it, good consistancy. No need to worry about bland flavor for this meal. If you are not a big curry eater, try it at home first to ensure you like the flavor and spicyness.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Spicy Cooked this at 8,600 feet. Was a bit soupy, so would back off the recommended amount of water. Taste was good, but spicy (but hey, it is an Indian dish).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great if you like hot and spicy This rates at least a solid Medium on the heat scale. Spiciness is relative: if you can't take spicy food you might consider this a "Hot", but those who do like it hot wouldn't really consider this "Hot". It's got enough spice to make me break a bit of a sweat, and it would be too hot for a lot of people (including my kids) so I'm going with "Medium". It would probably rate a 3 on the typical 5-star restaurant scale, maybe a 4 in heavily Americanized places. Put another way, this is probably equivalent to a generous helping of Cholula sauce on top of a dish, but not as spicy as putting a kicking habanero-based hot sauce on something. Hope that helps people gauge the spiciness. Flavors are excellent, with good textures of chicken, beans and potatoes. The portion is huge for one or moderate size for two. Not a bad value, with many backpacker pouches past the $10 level now.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hotter than expected Taste and texture were fine. If you like really hot, spicy curry, you'll like this. If you're looking for a dish with moderate heat, this may not be for you. My wife and I only had a taste and decided it wasn't for us.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tasty I eat a lot of Indian food, while this is not your traditional chicken vindaloo, it is overall pretty tasty. I eat very spicy foods and tell them 10/10 at my local restaurant. This isn't that hot but it did burn my lips. It was also a little soupy and I went off the directions. Maybe use less water if you would like a thick consistency. Overall I think this is a good option for the trail because it would give your pallet some spice and diversity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from one of the good ones This was rather good. It was filling, without making me feel over-full, decently spicy, and I actually enjoyed it from the first bite to the last. I eat a lot of Indian food from a variety of restaurants, and while this is no gourmet experience, it still measures up quite favorably. I was rather hungry when I cooked this up, and it was just fine with only fifteen minutes of rehydration - at about 3000 feet.

Do the servings need to cooked together, or are they in two separate serving bags?

Asked by: bmn
The contents of the Chicken Vindaloo are mixed together in one bag and would have to be portioned out once cooked.
