I purchased these online after confirming they would work with my bike (see FAQ's). When they arrived, I quickly determined it wasn't going to be a simple plug and play installation. The front bolt seemed too short and it didn't look like the angle on the front fender stays would work with my bike. I figured I'd let REI give it a try since they are fairly close to my house and I needed to take my bike in for the initial maintenance anyhow. Long story short, they installed the fenders after making some minor modifications and they look great.
Strong and Easy to Install
Easy to install and very tough. The plastic is made very strong and will not crack if you take a spill. I have three sets, two 45mm and one 35mm and they are all great. Not sure what the problem was with the other reviewer's bike, but the instructions are straight forward and there really isn't anything to mess up.
Great Fenders
We don't live near an REI (170 Miles) so buying these fenders was a gamble. When we got home that evening I started with the front fender. It was quick and easy, the hardest part was removing the front rack support and grinding it down so the fender would fit snugly into the fork. Then I installed the rear fender and the new rear rack as well. The supplied screws were long enough for the fenders support rods and the planet bike rack we had just purchased. I only had to look at the photo in the instructions to see how and where to bolt the support rods to the frame. Then I used the fasteners on the fenders to adjust the length of the rod to give the fender clearance from the tire. I assume that's the way it's done because it worked and I only had to go to the last resort (the instructions) once. Great product so far and the fenders and the planet bike rear rack we purchased fit my wife's AWOL very well, and the bike looks and rides great.
Fit my Kona Dew Plus Perfectly
I've been absolutely delighted with these fenders. They fit my Kona Dew Plus hybrid like they were designed for it. I was able to install the fenders in a relaxed-pace hour. They are rock-solid with no rattle whatsoever. I often forget they are there. If I could change one thing, I would add a little bit more (lower) coverage in front. My bottom bracket still gets mud on it and I have to wipe it off once a week to keep it clean. I see now why avid wet-weather commuters frequently tack on another piece of rubber, leather, or plastic to the bottoms of their fenders.
Easy install, fits well
Bought these for my wife's hybrid for the sloppy spring weather. Thought we would take them off for the coming summer but they don't rattle, are really not that noticeable so assuming they handle a crosswind when put on a bike rack when we travel they will stay on permanently. My wife doesn't like to get dirty so these will help in all seasons now. Solid buy.Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that I think they should give longer screws in case you are going through the fender braces and a rear rack as I had to. Luckily I had some longer screws around.
.... well that was that.
I got an older bicycle off [...], so I wasn't afraid to drill the bicycle frame. Be ready to be creative and solve problems, the installation instructions are useless. You will need additional screws with nuts to secure the fenders, the fenders are very lightweight so you could use plastic twist ties if you don't want to drill your frame. They won't fit perfectly. If you are concern with the aesthetics, have them installed professionally, if you don't care that workhorse bicycle looks ghetto fabulous, then these fenders are for you.
Unbreakable...what now??
I dont write reviews much (Yes I am one of those people :) ) but I read in the first line of the description of this product "Made from unbreakable, all-weather polycarbonate material; 50mm mud flaps provide extra coverage" I am now onto my third set of front fenders as I keep catching my foot on the front wheel and breaking the fender..... Apart from the "not really unbreakable" Issue...these are really good fenders and I suppose I would recommend them, but warn them to be careful as they do tend to crack/break even if the get a small knock.
Good fenders w/ creative mounting.....
I bought these fenders for a bike they definitely weren't designed for - a front suspension hybrid with disc brakes. The front fender is mounted to the bridge between the forks and just zip tied about the caliper..... not the prettiest, but works. The rear fender was a little trickier: while my frame has 2 mounts (under the seat & near the kickstand), the rear most mounts wouldn't fit due to the caliper. I ended up using P clamps on the frame, but that also gives a really solid mount. But how well do the fenders work? The rear fender is flawless IMO. The front fender is a little high because of the way I mounted it, and does tend to let water spash up on my boots. For the money though, I've got no complaints!
Works after intense trial and error.
The instructions for the fenders where useless. They tell you to do a lot but show you little in the form of illustration. Also if you have a kickstand in the bike it might not lock in place properly as it requires the hook that is located where a standard kickstand would go. After an intense effort I managed to get it to fit relatively securely to the bike. Because of how the brackets hold the fender a large bump can knock them out of the housing. Overall the fenders are of decent quality. For the average rider I would recommend these. They are reasonably priced, but don't expect the instructions to help you much.
Perfect for my Novara Safari!!
Have to say, it fits my bike like a glove. Prior to buying these, I bought a different kind from a Bicycle "expert" on the sunshine bike store. It was garbage and ended up removing it and picking the new pair from REI. The new fenders feel and look very good on my bike.
