Great fender, awesome company with great support
Awesome fender which installs pretty easily. I used it on my 2016 Specialized Fatboy for a few weeks until it unfortunately broke when my bike fell over. I was able to get in touch with PDW via email though and they're sending me a replacement arm since the rest of the fender is fine. They responded extremely quickly and are very pleasant to work with for support. I run 4.6 inch wide tires and this fender covers them pretty well. Adjusting the angle of the fender and how high up it is on my post made it block a lot of the dirt/sand/snow/mud around my area.
Broke quick release bracket on second ride
It was moving around on the seatpost so I tightened the strap, when I tried to secure the plastic quick release bracket it snapped easily
Flimsy fenders, but light.
Won't add any weight, but that's not an issue for most fat bikers. Flimsy, and when you catch your leg on the rear fender mounting the bike you may crack it like my friend did. Then it's superglue and/or duct tape time.
OK for smooth trails, but not bumpy ones
Fairly decent overall design. Works well when the trails are smooth. But once you start riding anything with a little bit of tech/rocky, forget about it. The snaps that secure the plastic fender to the mounting bracket will pop loose. First a couple will come loose. You’ll stop and resecure them. When you take those bigger hits, all four will disconnect and the fender will end up on the trail. The snaps need to secure the plastic fender much tighter. It’s a design failure point. Beyond that, the fender seems to do a pretty good job of keeping the slop off your backside when the trails are not bumpy. Surprising though since this is supposedly designed to go on mountain/fat bikes that will be on MTB trails.
PDW - Smart, functional design
Portland Design Works "gets" cycling. This mud guards (i bought both front and back) are a MUST for fat trie bikes - else you end up looking like Miss Piggy's dirty sibling. I had tried another brand - and a stupid design and lost the back fender going over a log - didn't discover it until I was miles away. These are light, durable, attach easily , can be removed easily and do the job of deflecting the wet muck, mode and slush the fat tire kicks up. No more dirty streak up my back- yea! Don't over analyze - get these!
Cheapest plastic clamp breaks easily.
This product is garbage. The clamp mechanism is the cheapest piece of plastic junk I've seen used on a high-torque item in I can't remember how long, snapped like a twig on first install. The rest of the fender is decently designed, but this thing seriously needs a redesigned clamp for installation on a seatpost, it sucks
Works With Dropper Posts
It's difficult to find rear fenders for fat bikes that can mount low enough to work with dropper posts. But this fender works for that, because it can actually mount to the frame seat tube below the dropper post seat clamp. It still flexes and slaps the tire when landing off jumps, but so far the clamp hasn't broken. It works flawlessly above freezing temps. Below freezing temps, the clamp seems to come lose after riding aggressively and taking several jumps, at which point I have to stop and retighten it. That's annoying. But I've contacted the manufacturer about this, and they've been EXCELLENT discussing potential solutions with me (zip ties, etc). We're still experimenting to solve this nuisance... Can also purchase the matching front (downtube) and fork fenders which look great.
This one works!
I tired a couple different fenders before this one and got very muddy and wet. This one is super wide and super light. Keeps me clean and dry.
This is just a piece of cardboard!
This is basically a flat piece of cardboard that you fold over and attach to your bike. I sent it back immediately. There are much better options for the same price (see the Blackburn Splashboard).
Not bad
My first purchase from REI and it works great, it looks awesome on my fat tire bike, love it
