Gimick
I tested this out this morning at about 15 above on my commute. The incoming air was as if I had no mask on and the sensation of humidity building inside the mask was more unbearable than a fleece balaclava. I had to remove this a mile in and replace it with my Gula polyester mask I've been using the last 3 years. The "Ventilation System" is a piece of rubber that floats behind the mouth piece with the same pattern cut out as the external mouth. Sorry to leave a bad review but I had expected this product to offer me a comfortable experience on my winter month commutes and downhill adventures, especially at this price. This looks silly and doesn't add comfort below 32f. Look elsewhere.
It works, but it's not for everyone.
It definitely does work, it feels like it bumps up the air temperature by 20 degrees, which is great in 20-30 degree weather, but anything colder than that will still be uncomfortable for strenuous exercise. I use this for running and the fit has to be snug under the eyes so they will fog your glasses (goggles may be safe). It does restrict breathing, but it's better than inhaling super cold air since I'm an asthmatic. The back strap has to wrap around the back of your head covering your ears which means that over ear headphones cannot be worn and certain bulkier earbuds will not fit. It's not for everyone, but it definitely suits my needs. It also keeps your face and neck nice and warm!
This product has served me very well
I wore this mask skiing and all last winter. I had NO PROBLEMS with it. I even wore while training for a marathon in freezing temperatures. You will look like Darth Vader but for me it beats being cold. I pull it down and use it as a gator when it is too warm.
Kind of awful, but may work for some.
Let me mention that I was really excited about the potential for this product given some of the positive reviews. I enjoy running in the cold, but keeping my face both warm enough and comfortable is my biggest challenge. I grew tired of having my balaclava frost up over my mouth, frequently requiring readjustment so that I could breathe easily. When I saw this product, I was excited in hopes it would work. The product may work well for some individuals, particularly if they are not running in the cold; however, my greatest dissatisfaction is with the poor fit. I think I have a pretty average face and head size, but the top of the breathing system rests uncomfortably on the bridge of the nose. It would not do so if one were to raise it higher, but for me, the fabric then starts crowding my eyes. I don't wear glasses. On my brief run (all I could tolerate), given the amount of moisture coming up by my eyes, I can't help but think glasses would fog up. It may very well be less of an issue with ski goggles. It felt as though my eye lashes were frosting over. This was easily corrected by moving the breathing system farther down; however, it then rests between the bridge and end of the nose, which is even more uncomfortable. The breathing system did not really keep my nose and mouth area warm. Exhaling the warm and moist air while running causes some condensation to build up on the skin. When one breathes in, the air is cold, leaving an uncomfortable sensation. Again, this might not be an issue with an activity where someone is not breathing as hard or as fast as running. I gave the product two stars as it did a nice job keeping my cheeks warm. I'll be returning it in hopes of finding something better. I would be interested in trying the product again if it fit better.
Great product for cold weather
I use this when commuting on my bicycle in winter. Does a great job with the cold air. Even though they don't claim it wont fog glasses, it did not fog mine. I similar products but found this the best. Not a fashion statement though, and initially it scared my dog.
Wow, what a lifesaver!
This is an amazing product...it's one of those "why didn't I think of that!" I carry it in my jacket for those days when the temperatures fall below comfort level. Wrap it around my head and I'm off doing what I want. The fit is adjustable due to the velcro. I've had facemasks before, but none that did what I wanted them - no moisture, warm air, and breathability. Top notch!
Helps hikers living with asthma
I bought this about a month ago to help me manage the asthma I've developed in late middle age. Breathing cold air can trigger it, so breathing warmer air helps. I've used it for my usual fast exercise walks (breathing 20-40F air for 4-6 miles at 4-5 mph) and for one winter backpacking trip (in the Gila Wilderness, while hiking in the mornings with temperatures in the teens). I wear eyeglasses which don't enable me to cover my nose with the plastic cup, but I wrap the mask around my face so the cup covers only my mouth, which works pretty well (most of my fast-breathing air is coming through my mouth as my nose is usually partly blocked due to allergies). This device is unusual but it works much better than a scarf. The vents in the plastic cup are sufficient so I can get more than enough air, moving at a fast walk, yet they are limited enough to mix my outgoing warm breath with the incoming cold air to warm it quite a bit. I am thankful to have this mask as it helps me continue my outside workouts even when the temperature drops. It also gave me more confidence going out into the Gila. I am also going to try to buy prescription ski goggles that work with the mask so I can cover my nose also, per the original intent.
Great! But has its flaws
Overall it works great while snowboarding. The rubber respiratory system keeps moister away from your face and lets it out the vents. Moister also collects along the inside of the rubber which is kinda gross. However, all face masks collect moister on the inside anyways except that other masks rub that moister back on your face. Because it is rubber I usually take it off every few hours and just wipe it down and its back to brand new in seconds instead of staying very wet. Your mouth will feel noticeably warmer and humid which prevents chapped lips even with it being exposed to the cold temperatures. The biggest flaw is its fit which is why I do not rate it 5 stars. The respiratory system tends to rest on your nose. At times it will make breathing from your nose difficult. On the slopes we tend to breath from my mouth so this did not cut off any air circulation. A quick adjustment usually fixes this for another couple hours. At the lounge I tend to get lots and lots of stares while wearing my mask AND goggles. Very entertaining to see peoples' reaction when they do not know you are looking back at them This face mask does what it's meant to do well enough for me to overlook its major flaw. I am very looking forward to version 2 that fixes the fitting problem.
Would be great for most people.
Did not fit me well. My head is a little larger than most, along with a broader nose (I still look normal, just how I'm built). I have this problem with facemasks, hats, etc. If you have a XL to XXL head, I think your face's structure and nose will make or break the fit. Fit my wife well.
Expedition tough & super warm
Along with their full balaclava, this is the warmest of all my Cold Avenger masks. The fleece is super warm & comfortable & the technology behind the mask simple & effective, it's important for some people to use the included insert nose piece so that your glacier glasses or goggles will not fog up, with a little adjusting you can get it just right. For years I have climbed mountains just trying to breathe through a fleece scarf but the answer is a Cold Avenger mask!
