Built for Longest Days on the Hill
These are far and away the best facemasks for any winter activity. My whole family has their own and we use them all season long. On the coldest days, my daughter and I rarely have to stop to warm up. Basically zero goggle fog too. Just a great product that lasts through literally hundreds of washings through the last few years. We get about 50-60 days on the hill between the two of us and I am an instructor at a local mountain. We only wear and promote BlackStrap wherever we shred and intend to do so for life!
Warm but uncomfortable when covering your face
This did a great job in keeping me warm while out for a hike in 10-12 degree weather. I also really liked how you could wear it in different configurations. My main issue was I found it really uncomfortable when up over my face. Perhaps if I was keeping my mouth shut and breathing through my nose it would be fine, but it was cold so my nose was stuffy and I was exerting myself hiking, but breathing through my mouth the fabric was very in my mouth which wasn't particularly comfortable. I would push it down around neck (it did serve as a great neck warmer) and then just pull it up for a little bit when my face was starting to get cold and then push it back down once it warmed up. Admittedly this is my first balaclava so maybe its a universal issue but I found it pretty uncomfortable.
Solid Balaclava
This has been warm enough to stay comfortable on some of my coldest ski days in the negative temps (paired with a helmet). Can easily pull down the mouth covering when needed. Doesn't get too smelly for synthetic material. Would buy again
Bought the blackstrap balaclava in Squaw valley & skied with it the whole trip.
Is is breathable, stays put, can be pulled down. easily to talk with someone - it is the real deal for the covid required situation and is good for cold & windy days. I luv it Ps. Bought two more for friends!
Expedition hood Balaclava
This hood is excellent its very durable puncture resistant my first one lasted several years!
Perfect for pandemic lift rules
I normally don't ride resorts with a mask unless it's below zero, but this season is obviously a little different the the mask in lift line requirement. With the expedition hood and it's hinged mask design it's been very easy to lower the face mask part while riding downhill and then bring it back into place when I reach the lift line, even with a bulkier pair of gloves. Neck tubes, gaiters, etc worked OK, but over the duration of the day would require a lot of adjusting to get and keep them in place. The hood fits well under a ninja suit hoody and helmet and at most has required adjusting once a day after a lot of runs. Would definitely recommend for anyone this year.
Worked great in -37C
I purchased the Expedition hood for a recent day long ice road fat bike ride in Northern Ontario. Early morning temperatures were -37C with windchill and -31 without. The balaclava kept me warm and the air breathable even in those cold temps with minimal freeze up and fogging of my goggles. When temps warmed up, I brought it down comfortably around my chin. After warming up and putting the hood back on damp it still kept me warm and comfy. All round great product.
Bike peddler
I bought this for winter cycling. I have used it in 28-40 degree weather. It fits well under my helmet, the facial protection is good and works well with my cycling glasses. I wish it it had more neck protection under my windbreaker but it's much better than the one I replaced it with.
Excellent for cycling and skiing
I bought the Expedition Hood Balaclava for skiing and hoped it would work for cycling as well. It exceeded my expectations for both activities! On a recent early morning ride at 29°F (22°F with windchill), it kept me warm, prevented my cycling shades from fogging up, and was impressively breathable. Plus, it fits comfortably under my regular cycling helmet! It is a well designed product and worth every penny!
Happy Face
Perfect for skiing! I also have a light weight one, but prefer the warmth of the expedition weight. I can wear kids size & adult. It is easy move up to cover and down to breath & air out. I wash it by hand & dry flat. It doesn't irritate my sensitive skin. Keeps me warm even when its moist. Stays in place under my helmet. Love all the colors.
