It Works
We bought this after deciding carrying our Advanced Elements Convertible (inflatable) kayak was a bit much for longer distances. We went to the REI mothership store where they nicely pulled a kayak like ours down so we could test fit carts. This was the best fit. It can be had for less elsewhere but REI got the sale because I could test fit the cart for the job. We carry the cart on the rear deck of the kayak using velcro straps if we take it with us on the water.
Terrific kayak cart
I used this to haul a kayak/ for about one-half mile down a paved road, to a dirt trail, then a fairly steep, narrow trail to the launch point. Then, going back, over a gravel beach, back up the hill to the trail. This is a light, fairly wide folding kayak. The cart is terrific for all of this terrain. The boat stayed put, even when it was essentially going down a narrow trail on a hill. The trail wasn't wide enough for both tires to fit, so the cart went down the hill with one wheel up on the side of the trail. No problem with sand or gravel on the bank of the river. Can't say what it would do with deep sand or larger rocks. But the tires won't go flat. Nice cart at a reasonable price.
Worth the extra bucks
$169 at Amazon plus $10 shipping. I paid $108 with my 20% discount at REI.But why pay $108 when similar looking carts can be had on Amazon for as low as $32? The answer is simple. No smelly tires, no loss of air pressure, bursting inner tubes and collapsing carts. Two sturdy ratcheting straps instead of flimsy ones with buckles that break. And best of all, turn it upside down and you have a super kayak loader so you have two devices in one. Worth the extra bucks. Returned the other piece of junk I ordered on the net as well as the rollers I had bought at REI.
Tried 2 other carts but this is the best
I tried a cart with air in the tires and it kept going flat, so that was a real pain and they eventually could not be re-inflated. I tried a cart with hard wheels and it did not roll over the rocks and bumps well and it was not as sturdy and broke. This one is sturdy, rolls over the rocks great, and the tires never need to be inflated. The tie downs they include with the cart work, but I prefer to use Garb Tie Downs (Google them to see what I mean) as they allow me to tie the Kayak or my Windsurf Board to my cart much faster.
Won't Fit In The Hatch
I love this cart. It was sturdy, easy to use and helped save my back. This would be a 5 star review except for one major issue; it will not fit in the back hatch (or any hatch) of either of my P&H Sea Kayaks. I know, I should have measured first but with the wheels off, the metal part is the full 28 inches and with a skeg box and the extra bulkhead for the day hatch I just can't work it in. Should be fine on kayaks without either one of those but test before you buy and if it fits, buy it. Glad REI has a generous return policy.
Made life much easier
I actual bought this for my brother as a gift, but I used it several days while exploring some river islands in FL. I used it for a heavy canoe to putin about 1/8 a mie away. The cart worked very well on hard pavement..the only place Ive used it so far. It stands upright on its own as you place the canoe on it then secure wraping straps (included)around the canoe. It worked much better than our home-made cart. Easy to turn and as you move the cart toward the middle of the canoe, the weight shift makes transport near effortless. It is much easier to get the cart in the middle by having a second person holding up one end of the canoe...I often go alone. Thus the reason I did not give it a full five stars. The product wont rust, is very durable, and folds down so it can fit in the canoe and not be left behind. Its a little pricy but I learned you get what you pay for, and I expect this to last a lifetime so Im okay with paying more.
Back Saver!
We had the good fortune to be given a canoe: a very long and heavy canoe that is great for family outings. We discovered that it is very hard to port to the launch due to the weight of it - probably 85 lbs or more. I ordered this cart after our first outing. We used it to transport the canoe from the car to the backyard and it worked great. Easy for 2 people to move even over hills and bumpy ground, and the straps are very substantial - even better than the ones that came with the canoe rack for the car. Looking forward to using the cart in the future when launches and parks are open again.
Excellent cart for my yak
I got the cart to carry my Mad River Canoe Synergy 12 kayak. I hand carried several kayaks before without a cart and this cart makes a world of difference. I can easily manage the vessel on my own. Check out their website for hints on using it to load and unload from vehicles. Can't really use it in my Honda Pilot because of the spoiler in the back but it could work in others. [...]
Life is easier
The kayak cart has made it so easy to carry my heavy tandem along with other beach supplies loaded in it. So easy on hard surfaces. Of course it is expected to have more of a drag in deeper sand. Perhaps some larger wheels would help. Overall, a great purchase.
Much much better than carrying my kayak.
I'm pretty fit, female, and in my early 60's. It had gotten unpleasant to carry my kayak to whatever lake shoreline or river bank where I was kayaking. This has been a terrific help. It doesn't do so well in deep sand but that was a given with the specs. It packs easily and works well.
