Surprisingly easy to paddle!
We took our Oru Kayaks out of the box on the shore of String Lake, Grand Teton NP, with directions in hand and gathering onlookers anticipating the final form of our clever unfolding. The first attempt was frustrating. I might have said a swear word or two. However, the second kayak emerged more easily and lacked the initial assembly drama. Those interested in our maiden voyage were delighted to see how light the boats were and how easily we launched them. After sliding into the water, my first stroke shot the boat forward and I knew I was in for a great day of paddling. My wife and I simultaneously commented about how easily the boats paddled and how responsive they were. As a side note, thank you very much for supplying a decent paddle in your package. It paddled as well as my trusty Werner paddle and broke down better. The first test came at the north end of String Lake where we had to portage the boats a quarter mile to Leigh Lake. At 26 pounds apiece, we easily carried both Oru boats together. On a previous trip to this same destination, we carried 65 pound plastic kayaks individually over the portage, which means we walked a mile with more weight, instead of a quarter mile with lighter Oru boats. Paddling Leigh Lake was a dream. Even in light chop from an afternoon gust, the Oru Kayaks paddled great! Our heavier, plastic ocean kayaks totally out perform the Oru kayaks on our home waters of Monterey Bay, but they don’t come close to the convenience, compact storage, and light weight we need for packing in our trailer and heading out to lakes in the northwest. The best part: I didn’t buy have to buy a kayak rack for the cab of my truck, which my wife isn’t tall enough to reach anyway, for two folding kayaks that fit snugly in the truck bed. Thank you for a pair of really fun kayaks. More adventures to follow…
Life saver for planes and long distances
I love my Oru pack. It’s really well made and it’s been on 3 flights now. But as great as it is there could be some improvements for long travel purposes, but for simple carrying purposes it’s great. If you need to walk inclines, declines, long distances, uneven surfaces, etc., with the pack it’s not a problem. I’ve also flown with my Oru internationally, using the pack, and I didn’t have any major issues. I made sure to tighten all of the straps and then I tied them to one another to prevent snagging. I also made sure to put place the zippers in the top position on the bag when checking it in and I had no issues with getting snagged or damage. BUT I also did make some reinforcements to give myself a piece-of-mind that my kayak would arrive umdamaged. I added some 1/4”’neoprene padding inside the bag using Velcro. It does add a small amount of weight, but it didn’t affect the use or put me over the weight limit for checked baggage. I just felt with the way they bang around bags at airport, it was worth it.
Wish they put more thought into this
Well the kayak fits into it, so that's good. For short distances though it's actually easier to carry it without the backpack. For a 5'4" woman it sticks far back and just isn't too comfortable. I got it mostly for future air travel, but from other review and other travelers I realize they should have a way to tuck-zip the straps behind the material so it won't get caught on everything. This doesn't seem like rocket science, they keep updating the kayaks but not this backpack! I'd actually love a slightly padded soft case for it for airline travel. I am hoping a 3rd party manufacturer comes up with one, if Oru won't.
My first kayak
First time assembling the kayak took me 20 minutes but after that it only takes 10 minutes, very stable and responsive on the water.
Not good for airline travel
My husband and I LOVE our Beach Kayaks, and recommend them to everyone! I was looking forward to having the packs, thinking it would make the kayaks even easier to store in the belly of our RV and assuming it would fix the problem of the metal edging on bottom of the kayak's carrying straps from scratching the car trunk when putting them in and out. Hiking distances with them and the ability to check them on a plane all made it worth the large investment. I thought. First let me say that these packs are extremely well made. Great zippers, strong fabric and reinforcement in corners. Being ORU, I am not surprised. However, since the shoulder harness and belt DO NOT tuck away, you should NEVER check this as luggage on an airline. The straps will get caught on conveyor belts or on other luggage and tear, or worse yet, arrive at a wrong destination. ( I worked for an airline so know how this often happens with straps. ) I am a 5'4" tall Senior woman, but quite strong and do a lot of back-packing but trying to put the Oru pack on with a kayak in it was a struggle! I found the balance of the loaded pack very poor. I had to walk at a 30 degree angle to keep it from pulling me over backward. I feel if the shoulder straps were attached higher, making the pack ride lower on my torso, it might be the answer. Perhaps a taller man may not find it's design a problem. The shoulder and hip straps were padded quite well, albeit a little cheaply. If the straps had a Velcro pocket to stow them away so they would not get hung up on everything, I may have kept them just for the storage and sun protection, but will, unfortunately, be taking advantage of REI's fabulous return policy. We will continue to carry the incredible ORU kayaks with the carrying straps they come with, which work very well.
It does not fit
It does not match the picture of putting kayak in bag. I am not happy. i am calling for a supervisor on Monday.
Hip Belt too small
The backpack seems comfortable, rugged, and well-thought-out. However, the hip belt does not fit my 48” waist (2x women’s T-shirt size—and I am still well under the weight capacity of the Oru I ordered this for). If I had a 42” waist it might still be small. Oru did not design this hip belt to accommodate my size, even though their kayaks are designed to accommodate my size. I’m going to have to mod out the hip belt on this brand-new ~$200 pack to get it to fit. It’s kind of my only option for carrying this boat. I’d like both Oru and REI (as much as I adore REI for literally everything else, guys please make a Sahara hoodie in my size) to acknowledge that fat people like to go outside too!!!! Come on!
An amazingly inventive boat that will be right for some and not for others.
There are a great many things to love about the Oru: it's lightweight, ingenious design, and incredible transportability on anything from a small car to an airplane are reason enough to love it. That said, there are some real drawbacks. The light weight means that a stiff wind makes paddling and holding a line a serious chore, the seat is poor, though a bit better with the gel pad, it is far more prone to damage than a regular kayak, and for my specific model (Bay ST) doesn't hold a line as well as other 12' kayaks I've used nor is it very stable. It is fantastic fun to light up at night, and draws conversation nearly everywhere I take it. For me, another product serves me better, but I'm keeping the Oru for airplane travel and night paddles.
Great for Car Travel and Storage, Less so for Air
I bought one of these at a Garage Sale, and I'm really glad I did. It's great for storing my Coast XT and makes maneuvering it to my car and to the beach so much easier. However, I took it on one flight and it now has a small rip right in the center while in transit. Easy enough to patch, but wish I didn't have to, and I don't plan on taking it on many flights in the future anyhow.
Good design but a bit too snug
I haven't had a chance to field test the pack but it looks sturdy, has plenty of adjustments for ergonomic fit, and some nice details such as paddle and water bottle pockets and straps for extra gear. I was disappointed, though, at how hard it was to squeeze my Beach LT in. Obviously I need to re-fold the boat more tightly without crushing the loose parts that stow inside.
