Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great wool sock! I've had some of these for up to a decade, and still put them on my Christmas list every year. The older ones get a little stretched out over time (again, we're talking 10 year old socks), but are overall extremely durable. I've only had one or two pairs ever wear through in the 10 years I've been wearing these, and I wear them daily in the winter. I have some SmartWool Mountaineering socks as well, but prefer the slightly less bulky and slightly shorter Trekkers. They do cost quite a bit for a sock, but the durability offsets the expense. I only need one or two new pairs a year to maintain my "herd" of SmartWools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for Afghanistan!! I was issued SmartWool socks in 2003. I've worn these socks on multiple trips through the mountains of Afghanistan. There were times where I would wear the socks 3-4 days in a row and they would still outperform any other sock I've ever worn. I still have the same socks I was issued in '03 and I just now in 2010 have a small hole in them. I have ABUSED these socks to the fullest. If you want to send a care package to a loved one "down range", send them SmartWool socks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smartwool - Best Socks on the PLANET I love the wild patterns and colors - those 10 degree and below mornings it is REALLY HARD to get out of bed at 4:30 AM, pull on heavy fleece lined riding britches and layers of clothes but the Smartwool line of hiking socks are amazing and the colors are a spirit lift and a source of smiles and giggles at the barn when the boots come off. I have recommended Smartwool to my riding buddies, starting them off with their first pair as my treat, and we are confirmed Smartwool fans. After the barn, time to change into work clothes and another pair of Smartwool socks for the office. Love them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like heaven for your feet. I bought a pair of these sock for use while backpacking but i ended up using them about every other day. I probably wore and washed these socks 150 times before they finally wore a hole in the bottom. I now have three pairs and rotate them so i have a fresh pair everyday. One of the simple joys in my life is putting on a clean pair of these socks every morning. I've done lots of hiking with them and never had any blisters and i don't use them with liners. They are thick so i wear a half size bigger in shoes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Softest, if not most durable. I've put quite a few miles on the various socks in my stable--heavy trekking with heavy boots to fast 20+ mile days in trail shoes--and I've never parked my feet in socks so soft as these. The interior is just staggeringly fluffy. I like these socks. No sock I own feels as good. They are really very nice socks. I would only give this caveat: they seem to flatten over the course of a hike and wear down with long use. (Emphasizing that they are wearing down from an amazingly comfortable place to adequacy). Only, next to the miraculous longevity of my Throlo heavy hikers, I can't quite call these socks perfect. Really, really soft and fluffy--but not perfect. So! I'd recommend these socks to a friend looking for some super fluffy socks for lighter hiking, but I'd probably recommend Thorlos otherwise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from comfy and durable I rely on my feet for a living as a field technician and wildland firefighter, so it’s important to me to keep my feet happy and blister free. Since discovering Smartwool Expedition socks 8 years ago, my feet have been much happier than they were with other brands of socks. For extra comfort I couple these with a thin sock liner. Believe it or not, my first pair of Smartwool Expeditions are still in use although they are very thin and I’ve got a dozen or more in rotation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from outstanding! I never wrote a review before for anything. I did my purchasing at REI for a number of things for my South Africa Volunteer Work with AERU - researching with elephants in the fields. The accommodations are remedial at best but these SOCKS! They are LUXURIOUS! We had no water for washing recently and I had to repeat wear some of these socks....you could not tell the difference from a fresh pair. They are the best piece of clothing; how did I not know about these socks earlier?? I would wear them in the office and not just during hiking or international adventures. I love them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They provide the cushion I really believe the cushioning from these socks protects my feet. I buy my running shoes, hiking shoes and golfing shoes 1/2 size bigger so I can wear these socks comfortably. My feet are doing so much better now with this extra cushioning. If you are sitting around the office all day, I would not recommend these socks, but for any activity like golf, running and hiking, I highly recommend them. SmartWool makes great socks. SmartWool socks are not cheap, so I wait for sales and then they are pretty reasonable.

I wear a 11.5 running shoe. I am planning to buy a pair of Salomon 4D II GTX hiking boots. If I use these socks, should I buy a 11.5 size or 12?

Asked by: Jayant
We suggest ordering a size large in order to limit sock slippage.

Why no smalls?

Asked by: CTLizB
As of March 2017, we do not have size small and do not plan to get them in stock in the future.

How thick is the cushion on these socks compared to the REI Merino Expedition Heavyweight socks?

Asked by: Midwest lady
The amount of cushioning between the two socks is very similar.

I love SmartWool socks but find they bind at the top. Is there a way to stretch out the cuff? Or can you recommend a model (for Wyoming dog sledding in February) that won't bind?

Asked by: KitsapGal
Unfortunately, there aren't any tricks to stretching out your socks, but they can stretch out over time as you wear them. You may want to try the REI Merino Wool Expedition Socks as they stretch a little more: https://www.rei.com/product/664970/rei-merino-wool-expedition-socks
