The tent is not self standing even with all the poles set up. It has to be staked in to the ground, and the stake system is overly complicated. Which is the summery for this tent. Overly complicated. The center pole that goes down the length of the tent has to be snapped in to the middle pole that goes the width of the tent. The plastic piece on the length-wise pole was facing the wrong direction to connect with the plastic piece going the width of the pole. So that one flaw, made it impossible to set the tent up. But besides that, the tent is just a complicated design that is flawed.
I tried setting this up before a winter hike, but was unsuccessful. The instructions-and one of the photos above, show the center clip inserted onto a black piece on the the pole. That is not present on the tent I received. Instead, there's a metal piece on the pole and a clip that slides onto it. I could never get that clip to stay on the pole, regardless of its orientation. There's nowhere on the web or in the instructions that looks like the tent REI sent me.
At 5lb 12oz, the Sierra Designs Convert 2 Tent is remarkably light for a 4-season and its versatility. It is simple to set up, with sufficient space for two people and enough width to fit two wide sleeping pads. The generous vestibule provides ample storage for two people's backpacking gear, with room to spare. My daughter and I backpacked in fall and winter. The tent handled 42 mph winds and heavy rain flawlessly—the inside stayed dry. The tent offers excellent breathability and ventilation. Both the tent door and back window feature double zippers with mesh and canvas. The tent also performed well in 30°F weather. After reviewing instructions and getting familiar with the tent, my initial set up took about 15 minutes by myself. The poles are color-coordinated with corresponding metal clips that are easy to use. The main pole connects to the arch poles in the middle and at each end (note: this is not a freestanding tent). The fly pulls over the top and attaches to the same metal clips as the poles. Even though it is optional, I do recommend securing the fly with provided stakes.
