I was a little nervous about how these would fit as I usually like a wide width because I like a wide toe box since I have metatarsalgia. They are perfect, plenty of room, yet still fits well in the heal, comfortable straight out of the box. My favorite boots yet, hope I can find something just like these for summer hiking. Waterproofing is great, they keep my feet warm and dry on my rainy Seattle outings. I think they will be perfect for snowshoeing as well, they have a nice ring to hook my gators to. I have not found them to be slick on Seattle streets when wet, nice grip. I found them true to size as I wear and bought a 6.5.
I didn’t have time to break in these boots but no need! They were comfortable from the very first time I put them on my feet. Kept my feet warm and dry, hiking along the Oregon coast. Would absolutely recommend this boot!
I have been searching for a lightweight waterproof boot to replace my ancient Capra Bolts. i thought these would do the trick. Unfortunately, they did not. I wear a 10.5 slim. I usually get by with very thick socks. That worked well so that my foot was not slipping up and down at the heel. However, the boot comes up higher than what I expected. There is a rough place on the right boot near the tongue that isn’t on the left boot.I tried wearing them around the house to break them in but only succeeded in creating sore spots on the front of my shins. I will be returning them. I hope there will be more boots (and sales) available after the holidays.
I have wide feet and foot pain when walking in boots but these are perfect and extremely warm.
Thank you!
Ok, I have not yet hiked in them as I purchased them for an upcoming winter trip to Utah but I am very confident that they will do great as they are very comfortable right out of the box. And warm even with thin socks on. That said, I should have trusted my instincts and ordered a whole size larger than I usually would take in a casual shoe to allow room for my toes and thicker socks. I usually take a 7M and ordered these in 7.5 to allow for thick socks. In thin socks, my big toe is scraping the end of the boot and in thick socks, my toes are squeezed. I have medium to slightly wider feet and the width, while not roomy, seems fine without the thick socks.
My older Merrell hiking boots just couldn’t cut it in the ice and snow (my feet were literally freezing!) so I was delighted to find the Thermo Chill boots. Unfortunately, the first time I took them out of the trail, a lacing hook on my right boot caught on my left microspike and down I went - hard. I thought I could tighten the hooks, but they’re too strong to bend back with pliers. I hope Merrell comes back with a safer redesign, because these boots were warm and comfortable.
I live in the Bay Area and lately some days are in the 30's and 40's. And lately that comes with rain! I bought these because we camp a lot and I needed a sturdy but super comfy and warm boot for hiking and schlepping around in the cold and rain. These are WONderful! I have arthritis in my feet so the inside of the boot - soft, cushy, warm and supportive - soothes my feet. I was out for a few hours in 45 degree rain yesterday and was dry and warm. When I got home and took the boots off my feet were warm! I experienced very good traction with them as well. Yes, they look a bit large on my feet but who cares! They are still a handsome boot. I love, love, love these!
Bought these for a winter trip to Bryce and Zion. My feet tend to get cold so I wanted something insulated for walking on snow. Bryce had a lot of snow-covered trails and these definitely kept me warm. In Zion, they had perfect traction for the chains portion of Angel’s Landing (without snow on a sunny day). Comfortable and warm. Would recommend!
Now I finally have to write a review. We have a lot of snow here at the moment. It's freezing, and the blizzard was very heavy today. It's still very windy. Our supermarket is around the corner, and we walked there. I was wearing the Merrel Thermo Chill Mid Waterproof. I have had the shoes for a year, but the winter in 2019/2020 wasn't that bad. I hardly wore the shoes. But I've been wearing them every day since the end of 2020/2021. I always have warm feet, and the grip makes me walk safely. But today, it was the big test—no wet feet. I also stood in the snow for a while without moving. My feet stayed warm. Nothing went through. Wow, these are really some really great shoes.
These boots are incredibly comfortable, breaking them in has been pretty easy. I wore them on a short walk in GA, and my feet didn't overheat. I wore them for a few days in the winter in OH, and my feet stayed very warm. I deducted a star because the 4 metal hooks at the top for lacing open surprisingly easily if I bump into something, and they're so strong that I can't bend them back on my own, so my laces fall out. I've had to retie these boots a lot. I just stopped lacing them all the way up to avoid this, but I'll have to revisit this solution when I begin hiking so I can have proper ankle support.
