My new go-to carry-on bag.

This pack is going to be my new go-to for flights and urban adventures. It is super slick to look at and highly functional. It has 2 different entry points for the main compartment. Which is divided up to fit a laptop, tablets, binders, and other small compartments for things like cables and backup charges or portable hard drives. I like that it has load lifters to adjust the pack to your specific fit, most commuter/campus packs skip that. My only real issue is with the water bottle spots on the sides. They are a bit tricky to get your bottle into if it's bigger then a basic use once water bottle. My 20oz coffee water bottles fit, but they struggle to get in easily. Apparently this is a modular system so you can expand the carrying capacity quite easily and the clips for it look quick and easy to use. Solid backpack

Trendy, Durable, and Functional

I have used many backpacks throughout the years, both for commuting and for outdoor activities. And I have to say this backpack somehow blends the best of both worlds. It is super durable so when I’m outside hiding or climbing, I can trust that it won’t break or rip. And it’s also light and slim enough that when I’m commuting to work on public transportation, it feels great there too. And for context, I’ve tried Peak Design backpacks, Patagonia, Away, Timbuk2, and more. (Definitely a backpack fanatic). Some other key features: fits my 16” MBP easily, multiple opening zipper compartments, fits 2 travel mugs, and is modular. The only con so far is that the zippers are super tough (water resistant for sure) but it requires a bit of strength to open and close.

Rugged Rectangular Travel Pack

When I travel, I prefer to carry all of my stuff on my back rather than pulling luggage. This pack is perfect for a weekend getaway. The rectangular shape accommodates my large 15" laptop plus a day or two of clothes. There's a nice little pocket at the top for my phone and wallet. And there's a second zipper to directly access my laptop for security. Grab straps top and bottom make it easy to heft the pack into the overhead bin even if it's heavy. I was a little disappointed that there was no rain cover, but then I realized that the pack is basically waterproof. To test that, loaded it up with clothes and electronics, and turned on the hose. Water beaded up all over the pack but the contents stayed nice and dry. I love the water bottle pouches, which are a little tight but securely hold my bottles and in a pinch I can get them in and out while the pack is on my back. I'm not wild about the zippers. They may be rugged, but they're stiff and make it feel like a chore to open and close the pack. The security straps across the front must also be open in order to unzip the compartment all the way.

Very versatile backpack! Used for work & play.

As a long-time Osprey user, I was excited to try this new backpack system. Like many of my other Osprey products, this is quickly becoming a favorite! The Archeon 24 is a very durable and handsome backpack that can be customized beyond the standard backpack with additional modular Archeon system pieces that are easily attached with the quick-release accessory straps. I used this backpack as it came, without the additional system pieces and found that it met my needs. My day typically consists of work-on-the-go with multiple kids-in-tow. So, I found this backpack to be very useful. I was able to put my 16” laptop in the laptop sleeve area, my daughter’s tablet in the tablet area, pens, paper, an additional folder, headphones, keys, and lotion in the main compartment. A tightly rolled-emergency set of clothing for the little one also fit in the backpack. The top compartment also easily holds a larger wallet. The locking accessory straps came in handy to hold jackets, water bottles, and hand sanitizer. I really liked that they were push-button release so that I didn’t worry about the straps coming unattached accidently. There are expandable mesh pockets on both sides that at first seemed a bit awkward, but they are awesome to hold snacks or things that you need to easily reach and don’t want to have fall out of a standard mesh pocket, usually used for holding water bottles. I couldn’t find a water bottle that would work in the mesh pockets, but they easily attached to the accessory straps. My only concern at first was the zippers. They were stiff for the first several uses but then became easier to open and close the more I used the backpack. I’ve used it nearly daily for 2 weeks and am happy with this backpack. I will continue to use it for daily outings and travel when I need to have my laptop close by.

This is not the backpack you're looking for

When I first received this backpack, I thought it had great potential to replace the backpack I've been using as an every day carry for many years. However, after getting more aquanited with its features, and using it for a couple of weeks, I have determined that this is not the backpack for me. For my testing, I carried around a laptop, iPad, water bottle and misc. gear. The good: shoulder straps are very comfortable, it's light, not overly bulky, and well made with quality materials. The bad: water bottle holders are the worst design I've ever seen! Who thought this was a good idea? You can only use narrow water bottles. Once you take the bottle out, it's very difficult, if not impossible to put it back in without taking the pack off. You can tuck the bottle up inside to keep the bottle from snagging on something, but then you for sure have to take the pack off to get it out. The hip belt is so narrow, it's uncomfortable. I found that having it is pretty pointless for my setup and I stopped using it. To open any zipper, you cannot do it one handed. You need to hold the backpack with one hand and really pull on the zippers. The top of the backpack, (where there's a carry handle), collapses partially and makes it difficult to grab the carry handle. Overall, I didn't like this backpack and if it weren't a tester, I would have returned it to REI to get my money back. I will go back to the every day backpack I've been using for years until I find the right replacement for it.

Great idea, not great execution

I really, really wanted to like this pack. I loved the idea of a sustainable, durable, water resistant pack for work, short trips, and being out and about. I will say, the material seems to be all it is billed to be - I had zero issues with we contents when in a rainstorm. That said, the pack lacks some key features. First, the pack itself - along with any of the available add-on slings or packs - has no viable option for an accessible water bottle. It has stretchy material on both sides but even a standard (non-liter) water bottle wont fit. Second, the zippers are awful. I guess this is the price you pay for the material being so robust but it's a fight to close them every time. Third, the zipper configuration is weird. There are two access points to the main compartment. One is conceivably for better laptop access. For this to work, you can't use the velcro strap that holds the laptop in place. The other issue with the zipper is that the front closure to the main compartment has zippers behind the accessory straps - this makes the opening much smaller than advertised unless you want to fight with the zippers over and over. Finally, there is basically no compartmentalization in the pack. I ended up using packing cubes for some basic organization. I think the goal here is to get you to buy the accessory/add-on packs that would offer those features. As a long time Osprey user, I am really disappointed in this one.

Commute bag

I have been using this backpack to commute to work. I mainly commute with my lunch, sweater, water bottle, and other miscellaneous items but occasionally with a laptop. The coating on the pack is very helpful with precipitation as water beads right off. However, the coating also makes the fabric stiff so I don’t feel like I can pack the pack as full as other backpacks. I have used a couple packing cubes for small items like chapstick because there is not as much small item built in storage as other backpacks that I have used for work. Adding a front storage panel for small items to this pack would make this bag so much better in my opinion! I love that the bag zipper allows for me to see the entirety of the main compartment, but I did move down the external straps for this. The zipper is hard to zip around the top corners because the bag is so well sealed. Not a deal breaker but kind of annoying when I am in a hurry. The side mesh pockets have an opening, which makes the pockets secure. However, I can’t quite access the pockets if I am wearing the pack. Overall it’s a great bag!

Built like a vault!

To say this is sturdy is an understatement. The gorilla on that old luggage commercial won't be able to beat this thing up. It is clearly made for tech items such as laptops, phones, etc. that need protecting. The materials are rigid for a reason. The zippers even are extra heavy duty. I doubt if I will go for the system components that match this but that whole concept is ingenious. As just a day pack the protective padding and divisions take up some of the volume so it likely will be a dedicated travel piece for me. So proud to own a piece from a Colorado company!

Commuter Cool

When I first received this product I was impressed by the style and feel of the fabric. Looks modern and functional with durable fabric to withstand weather. Once I started to use the pack, the looks began to fade and the functionality flaws showed. The biggest downside is how tough the zippers are to open and close and the hip belt is a bit uncomfortable. On the plus, it fits enough for a quick overnight trip including shoes, an outfit, laptop and all the other accessories. I haven’t used it in the rain but I do think it will holdup if you get caught in a rainstorm on your commute.

Impressive commuter/day pack - Husband's review

The Osprey Archeon 24 is a great commuter & travel pack! I walk about a ½ mile to and from work daily with my 15” laptop, cables, and other tech. The ability to fully unzip all three sides of the outer pocket allows you to retrieve your stuff quickly without rummaging and digging into the bottom of the bag. You can also unzip the top pocket to pull out the laptop. If you add a few modular accessories to the quick-release straps, this pack can be used as a Carry-On bag for a one—to two–night business trip and still fit under the seat. The back material and zippers are durable and water-resistant. I live in the greater Seattle area, and have used the backpack in the rain, even in late July. Before entering the building, I shook off most of the water from the bag, and all my contents were dry. It does take about a week or so for the zippers to break in and operate more smoothly. I have ongoing lower back issues, so the added lumbar support is a huge plus. The lumbar pads nest perfectly on my hips, and combined with the sternum strap, it helps spread the weight across my upper body and helps maintain my posture. (I am 5'11 with a long torso.) If you need more volume & added side pockets, I recommend the Archeon 30 or 40. Overall, this is a great bag for daily commuting or travel. I’m also looking forward to using it on day hikes after I get my new camera & equipment. I highly recommend this product and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
