I was pleasantly surprised by this bag! I really wanted a bag that could stand up on its own when filled, and this bag does that. I even filled it with my super heavy textbooks and it stood its ground with the stand-up frame. It is a little taller than textbooks though FYI, so you could fit more stuff on top. Hope that helps conceptualize the height/size of this bag. As for fit, it is a one-size-fits-all, and technically it does fit. For reference, I’m 5’5 and I have a short back with a prominent rear-end, so I generally have issues trying to find bags that fit my short backside. This does the job for sure, but it sits a bit high on me. I wouldn’t take it multi-day backpacking, but it will be a great travel bag/school bag, comfortable enough for trudging about on campus and through airports as a carry-on. I really like that there are multiple pockets, and the side-pockets for water bottles is big enough to fit the tall 40-oz Hydro flask bottles. The material of the backpack is a nice honey-comb-ish textured black, not just plain black which is nice. The material feels strong, and dust/hair repellant. The mesh frame as usual is well designed for keeping the pack off your back. They redesigned the sun glass pocket on top, so now instead of that waffley nylon it’s kind of a woven micro-fiber. I’m not sure if this will just attract more dust or dirt, but it’s not a dealbreaker for me. If you need a strong sturdy bag that will fit your laptop and tablet and a few heavy textbooks while standing up on its own, then this is your bag.
Best pack I've ever had. Do not understand why not 4.9 stars. Kickstand rocks, so light. Plenty of space. Best yet, synch straps pull contents tight so I can bike confidently without weight shift. The air spring-whatever- backing is actually super nice. Ventilation and support. Works better than imagined. Laptop compartment is spacious for my 17" laptop. Plus iPad. Plus phone. Protects so well (due to frame?) I don't even flinch if bag falls off table, or if I (infrequently) lay the bike down. I'm observing wear on the bottom contact points of frame. Obviously, fabric frays eventually. I'm not concerned. Easy diy fix- or use ospreys life guarantee for repairs. Been using this thing hard for a couple years now. Darn near good as new, seriously. Zippers Rock. Down to the plastic buckles you use to pull straps tight. So well designed. I can feel it, feels right. Even the whistle on the chest strap blows away competition. Literally only gripe is size of mesh pockets in "pen storage area". And didn't even realize that could be an upgrade until started looking at more recent models. It's paper light. So sturdy. Fabric rocks. User design is beyond par. Incredibly happy with this purchase, years down the line of heavy use. Haven't created a failure yet. Nor frankly do I expect to. Highlight I find missing in current iterations is lack of synch straps. This has it. Enables me to roll up to class with all of my study resources - then stop by the food bank on the way home and load up completely. And bike home like a menace with load tightly held to my torso. Sincerely hope to have it for life. And I just may. Osprey well exceeded the hype. Two years later I'm compelled to write this review. My first osprey. Earned a life time customer. All packs are not created equal though; ensure it fits your intended use. Mad props to the creators. I'm a pretty critical and fastiduous guy. Seriously, They done did this right. I'm appreciative.
I finally converted my opsprey talon pack into a fulltime hiking pack and needed a new 'everyday' pack for walking to work / generally around the city. After much research chose the Tropos and I love this bag so far! The kickstand... it SO nice! Having your backpack able to stand without having to worry about hearing it slide and fall randomly later is amazing. I will note my only two complaints which are 1. I wish the belt strap was bigger, thicker, and had some side pockets like the talon. 2. the compression straps do get in the way of the main zip, so you either have to release them or work the zip under them which is annoying. Aside that I am loving this pack and the extra space is really nice!
Really like this bag. Bought it to replace a 20 year old Northface day pack that I've used extensively for work travel. It took some time to get used to the straps on the front and the pocket configuration, but it's sleek, fits a large amount of stuff, fits nicely under seats on planes and is holding up really well. Holds a 17"laptop, 15" travel monitor, notebook, backup battery, and a full change of clothes.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When it doesn't have much stuff in it, the front part kinda starts folding in two. I usually carry my laptop charger in the middle section and it constantly bumps into the kickstand part making "bumping" sounds of it doesn't have anything else on top of it to fix it in place. If you have notebooks at the very front section, they upper part will "lean" out, forming a belly like bulgy shape on the front. I would love to have an option to hide/remove hip fixors and the ones on the front when I am not hiking. Otherwise, it is just great. I enjoyed hiking with it very much
I have a previous generation of this pack, which has a front zipper pocket in which I can store power adapters, cables, etc. It’s been a workhorse, going from the office to the field to the airport. Friends and coworkers were so enamored with it that they immediately purchased their own. I bought my wife one as well. The front decals have worn off, and it recently started creaking in the straps/frame, but over the course of about a decade, those have been the only issues I’ve had with it. This new version only has a mesh pocket which is very dainty. There is now an additional sleeve next to the laptop sleeve that could be used instead of the front compartment, but I found that the power adapters/chargers and other hard objects were pressed up right against my laptop. I ended up fixing the creaking issue in my old one and I’m keeping it and returned this new one. If the Osprey product managers bring back the front zipper compartment and keep the kickstand, I’ll definitely consider purchasing another Tropos in the future. If the lack of the rugged front zipper compartment isn’t a deal breaker for you, this could still be a fine pack.
I already buy 2 times from the website, and all of it must be refund because my 17"" laptop do not fit at your nebula 32 and tropos 32, why the heck the desc on tropos said its fit for 17"" and then when the bag come the tag was only said fit for 16""?
Have used it for daily commute, its great not having to worry about the weather, and its very comfortable even without using the chest or waist straps with a medium load.
I purchased this as a replacement for my work backpack (and for traveling for work, often internationally). This pack works perfectly for me carrying 2 15"" monitors and a spare screen, as well as storage for all the cables, cords, etc in the front pocket. In the middle pocket, I'm able to put a couple of Yeti ramblers and a few changes or workout clothes (shorts, socks, tops). The suspended back is super convenient and the fact that this pack can stand up on it's own when placed on the ground is another great benefit. I highly recommend this pack.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've enjoyed using this pack for work mostly and travel. With minimalistic needs it can supply me with about a week's worth of clothing. In a pinch it is also a great way to have a day pack when I'd left mine behind on a trip. The lack of organization was a concern, but overall hasn't been that big of a deal and it does simplify the overall access to items within it. One thing that can be a bit of a slight annoyance is when overstuffing the main compartment it can limit the ease of access to the front organization area and laptop storage.
