The perfect bicycle grocery bucket

I seldom show off things that I own, but after a shopping trip to Trader Joe's this morning, I decided to boast about my bicycle grocery bucket. If you go shopping by bike you have to figure out where to put all the groceries you purchase. A backpack may do for a small load. If you happen to already be using a milk crate, that should work, as well. But crates tend not to be very deep and ride pretty high, making a bike less stable. And, being an old guy, I'm challenged as it is to throw my leg over my the back of my bike when I get on it. For me a crate makes that even harder The conventional choice for groceries is usually a fabric pannier (a.k.a. a saddlebag). They certainly work and are a low-cost-of-entry option if you own one. With some exceptions, though, they have all sorts of compartments and zippers you need to fiddle with. And you have to unpack your groceries and stow the items individually to make them fit properly. What to do if all you want is to drop your very full bag of Trader Joe's groceries into a rack-mounted bucket and be on your way? Voila, I present to you the the perfect bicycle grocery bucket, which comes marked under the fancy name "Fjallraven Cool Cave Pannier." It's really not much more than a plastic trashcan with some nice hardware in the back that attaches it securely to a bike's back rack. The trashcan part does sport a drain hole, so it's easy to clean in case of a spill. That's a plus. Maybe there's an off-brand alternative to the Cool Cave, but I couldn't find one when I went to make my purchase. I used to have a pair of Ortlieb touring panniers that would have done the grocery-shopping trick. (They are essentially rubberized dry sacks.) Suffice it to say, I don't need an all-weather solution, and the grocery bucket approach has worked out very nicely for me.

fits what I need, easy to install

I’ve been eyeing the cool cave for a while. I’ve had my e-bike for about 9 months and have been carrying a backpack for all my commutes. My pannier racks are on the front so I wasn’t sure how side heavy just one pannier would be. I carry some swim gear in it now for a summer swim practice so that’s nice to throw wet stuff in it. I just have one and two might feel a little too Bulky for me. I like the look of the cool cave and I’m thinking about the lid that is sold separately and maybe want to get it. I use my cool cave and take it in and off and carry it around like a bag. I like it and I’m glad it went in sale, and I’m happy with it buy. The first time I used it I didn’t realize I had to lock the top holders and I hit a bump on the street and all my stuff went flying out. So it worked out and I gathered it things and all, but be sure to Lock it.
