I never had a chance to break these in before a trip to the west coast. First hike was to the devil punch bowl in AK. Then several walks and hikes around Seattle and Mt Rainier on the Burroughs Mountain Trail 1,2,&3. No blisters just a sore toe after probably 25 miles of hiking. Not too shabby.
Dave, thank you for the review and the awesome pictures. We hope you enjoy many more adventures in Merrells!
I build houses. I wear them to work everyday. They're so comfortable and light. My feet stay dry and cool. Unexplainable. Built three additions a few decks and remodeled a basement. I've had traction on all of the above and my feet have stayed dry..
I bought the Moab Speed GORE-TEX hiking shoes as a replace my Moab Flight shoes. In order to break them in I purchased the Moab Speed shoes two weeks prior to traveling to the Daniel Boone national forest in Kentucky. I wanted a shoe I could hike in all day and would keep my feet dry. The Moab Speed shoes performed flawlessly! They have all day comfort and excellent traction on the slippery rocks in the Daniel Boone area. I hiked through many streams and wet areas and my feet stayed dry. I wear these shoes in Michigan every day when hiking or walking my hounds and like my Moab Flight shoes, these shoes meet all of my needs.
Within a month and a half of light use the vibram soles started the tear away from the softer rubber material it was glued to. I didn’t wear these very often and treat my shoes with care, this should not have happened. Premium price for gortex and vibram in a Merrell shoe. Very disappointed with the quality of this product.

I bought moab goretex thinking they would hold up for my on the feet job .they started falling apart a month after having them....these were way more then I like to spend but if they held up they would of been worth it .I switched back to 65.00 Nike
Upon receiving them, I immediately took them hiking/camping, in the middle of a complete downpour. My feet were dry, I was able to maneuver well, and I was off-trailing and there were no issues with the shoes.
I had to retire my Merrell Granite Cangaroo shoes after 5000 miles of biking and hiking! Breaking in my new Moab hiking trails.
Very light, very comfortable, good grip, but these things arent durable enough for any real use. Wore them for four weeks backpacking Japan, mostly pavement and did some hiking on Fuji and up north, and the sole started to separate. Merrell warrantied them, and I wore the new ones for a week in Italy, did 25 miles of hiking in the dolomites and the soles are just shredded. They have good traction, but the soles are so soft they just tear apart. They weren't cheap when I bought them, and even for getting two pairs they weren't worth the money - basically disposable shoes.
Thankfully REI has a great return policy. Chunks of the soles fell off on my third hike. They had about 20 miles on them, with no extreme conditions. Before returning, I also noticed the soles were separating from the shoe at the heel on each foot. These were super comfortable and lightweight, and was looking forward to these shoes as my light duty trail shoe, but the durability was terrible. I've worn Merrell boots for a while and the quality here is not what I expected. Bummer.
These are really great boots for trails and normal wear. If you plan to go off the trail, through brush or briars be prepared for the seam tape to get shredded. They are comfortable and light weight but I needed something more durable.
