Broke on first use
This snowshoe broke the first time I used it, after just three miles. The hinge cracked where the binding meets the snowshoe deck. It’s not possible to replace or repair this failure mode, which, as you can read in other reviews, is far too common. Fortunately, I was not too far from the trailhead. However, this accident could have been deadly if circumstances were different. TSL were completely unresponsive to my warranty claim. Thankfully, and to their credit, REI accepted the return. The only positive things I’ll mention is that the aggressive crampons and heel assist were very good on this model.
Not sure why others are rating low
I've now taken these on several local and high altitude adventures in New Hampshire. They have been extremely comfortable and given me the traction I needed to summit Mt Madison in 50 mph gusts. They are ideal for new England winter because I don't usually need a ton of float. I truly can take off and on super easy and with leather mittens on which is exactly what I wanted. Haven't had any product failure yet.
Disappointing
I can't recommend these to anyone who is serious about about snow shoeing and mountain climbing. The very first time I had these snow shoes out the binding broke off while I was 6 miles from the nearest trail head. When you pay $300 for a pair of snow shoes I'd expect durability. I took them to a local merchant in Lake Placid and he told me that he stopped selling these at his store because almost every pair he sold came back broken. I bought these for the season and now I'm stuck trying to find a new pair with limited supply. Do your self a favor and stick with MSR. I had a pair of those for 4 years and they held up much better than these. The only thing I'd say to TSL is make a more durable snow shoe.
these are 10 fold better than MSR lighting Ascents
I’ve had 3 sets (MSR Lightning Ascents, Costco, and these Hyperflex). I’ve climbed tall steep peaks with Costco. And ya trip less with Costco than with MSR. The MSR are Soviet technology—big, bulky, boxy, and a tripping hazard. 30 years ago (when the soviets existed) I’m guessing they were mint. The Hyperflex are ergonomic. You can run in them with a full pack without altering your gait. They have a full length crampon which digs deeper than the MSR boarder. The MSRs still slip. The binding on the TSL is quick and easy—The boa binding is legitimately cool and fast to use. You can customize the device to your boot within seconds. Really it’s no competition. I can adjust both snowshoes and get them on faster than most people can get one snowshoe on.
As close to hiking as snowshoeing gets!
Have had other brands and they were bulky. These are as close to just hiking as snowshoeing gets. You can run in them; I tried it! Used them 2 to 3 times per week last winter, for nearly 5 months in the mountains around Boise, Idaho, and they never failed me. Great traction too, as good as the big spikes. Highly recommend
Broke while out
While out trekking, the rear of the shoe got caught and when sideways torque was applied, the plastic mount broke in half and made the shoe completely unusable. I attempted a field repair that lasted for awhile but the pieces are now lost. The packaging states they are for recreational use only not that far from safety so if you’re looking for a snowshoe that will hold up on long hikes, I would look elsewhere.
Great snowshoes with high weight capacity rating
As a first time snowshoer, and a bigger guy at the high end of the 300 lb weight limit I was very happy with how these performed. Easy to fit and adjust the bindings, including with gloves on. These snowshoes did what they were supposed to do, kept me up on the snow vs sinking way down into it.
Promising but extremely poor construction.
Was able to inspect a pair of these snowshoes (too short for me) before ordering. They looked great. Especially liked the cable closure for toes and the ratcheting ankle strap. Got a chance to use them at my house in Atlin BC. About 2' of fluffy snow on the ground. Use was to pack down trails on my land. They worked great for about 4, one hour walks. Then the buckle holding the ankle strap broke. There was no fall or any hard use at all; heh I am 80 years old. The buckle was attached with a soft aluminum rivet, clearly not up to the job.
TSL Rocks the Snowshoe
Absolutely LOVE my new TSL Showshoes and poles. Very light and super adjustable on all fronts. These are much improved from a technology standpoint vs my old Cabela ones. Got a pair for my wife as well. Nothing not to like here.
First use of this design, experienced user
Original purchase had a broken buckle, right out of the box. REI replaced the set right away, no questions asked. I took the replacement snowshoes out for an all day, rigorous backcountry trip. Snow was icy and consolidated. They were very comfortable and easy to use. Very effective and secure footing.
