Great overall watch, but poor GPS accuracy
There's much to like about this watch. Great battery life, mapping, suggested workouts. However compared to my older and much cheaper Garmin 235 the gps accuracy is pretty poor. It tracks me running going through people's houses instead of the road and depending on the route can easily increase or decrease the run distance (very noticeable when running a big loop). For a watch at this price point I expected a better or at least similar performance to my old 235. I do appreciate all the other things the watch has to offer, but if you're looking for a pure running watch, the gps is a let down and I'd recommend you look elsewhere.
GPS Repeatedly Way Off
Bought this watch to use mostly backcountry hiking and trail running. After doing two races both reading a mile short, the last straw was running a straight, flat trail today and the watch reading 1.6 miles at a spot I know was 2.0 miles from the start. In addition, the watch was reading 10 minute mile pace, when the person's watch next to me read low 7 minute pace. Perhaps I got a faulty product, but after trying all the troubleshooting steps it is time to return it.
Best of the Fenix 6 Series
I purchased the Fenix 6 Pro after returning the Fenix 6S Solar. In my opinion, the 47mm Fenix Pro is the best model in the Fenix line-up. I have small wrists which I thought would be better suited for the 42mm diameter 6S. Knowing the 6S has a smaller battery, I opted for the solar-charging model. While I really enjoyed the functionality of the 6S and found that it was better suited trail running and hiking than any other smart watch; the battery life and solar feature were underwhelming - especially considering the premium price. The solar charging is a nice idea but it doesn’t pan out in practice when it’s in the shade for over half the hike due to sun position or under your jacket cuff during cold weather. The battery life on the Fenix 6 Pro is generous to the degree there is no need for the marginal benefit of solar charging. In addition, the Fenix 6 Pro also provides more accurate heart-rate and VO2 measurements. I suspect the larger diameter face which almost ‘clamps’ onto my wrist is the reason why. Your experience may vary depending on your wrist size, but it is definitely something to consider if you are torn between the two models. Garmin really nailed it on this model.
Inaccurate at calculating distance/pace.
I love many features, but this unit consistently reports different distances than devices worn by others. Research reveals that this is a widespread problem with the Fenix 6 series and Garmin is unable to provide a solution. I’d return mine if I could as it’s a lot of money for a product that fails at one of the primary reasons to buy it.
Exceeds my expectations
I tend to over think purchases, even more so for high-priced items such as this. But man am I glad I picked this up. I can't even begin to list the functionality this has or the insane number of stats this can track (who knew I'd be tracking the miles on my trail runners?!). From simplifying my runs by acting as a music player (I can now take just earbuds and my keys), to tracking my fitness this watch does everything. 36 hours under GPS and roughly 2 weeks in normal mode w/ HR monitoring, the best battery life I've had in a smart watch. The standout feature for me is loading GPX maps for my hiking and having the watch track and navigate me on new trails. That alone is worth the entry price!
Useful, but very, very steep learning curve
I purchased this mainly for the GPS as I was tired of getting lost on trails that weren't always well marked. And I can say it works for that But, this watch does so many things that it is hard to use. There is lots and lots of drilling down through menus to get to what you want. And calling the user interface non-intuitive is an understatement. I almost returned it several times, but didn't want to admit defeat. After several attempts, I can more or less get it to do what I want, when I want. It may be possible to reconfigure to really match what I need, but I simply don't have the time. There is a reason that there are dozen's of online tutorials. With all that, I don't regret the purchase. It does show where I am, and my husband appreciates the tracking on the app so he can see my progress.
Great upgrade from the Fenix 5
Originally purchased a Fenix 5 in March 2017 and this is a welcome upgrade. Better battery life, larger display (reduction of bezel makes a huge difference), a little less bulky. The new widget layout is much better, and Garmin Pay is a great feature to have now. I wear my 6 Pro 24/7 and the battery life lasts about a week, running around 6-7 hours a week outside with Pulse Ox enabled.
Incredible
bought this a week ago. REI is the place to buy. They give you 90 days to play with it get immersed and actually use before committing. I have to say after just a week I am thoroughly impressed at this watch. no issues no problems everything works perfectly. I'll update again in 60 days! Well done Garmin and REI
Heart Rate Spotty
I've used Gramins many times in the past, I absolutely loved the Fenix 5 I owned a few years back. I picked up this Fenix 6 Pro this year as an upgrade after not having a Garmin for a while. However I had to return it since the heart rate was spotty. It would often fluctuate with no reason, during a good workout it would read like a leisurely walk, and at other times I would get a high HR alarm while sitting down reading a book. Nothing against Garmin in general, I will likely own one again someday, but this one did not work out.
A great watch for outdoor lovers
I’m really impressed with this watch. I expected it to be complicated to operate but it took no time to personalize. The GPS when hiking is exceptional and as good as my Garmin handheld gps. The Garmin Connect app makes everything very straightforward. My only gripe is the quality of the free Garmin topo maps - they’re not the best as some trails are missing. I very easily uploaded a better OSM map to it though.
