Great for spicy food lovers, add salt to taste

We tested this product out prior to a future camping trip. 1) This meal is spicy! But if you can handle spicy food, it's delicious! 2) There was a missing element in the flavor, but it was easily remedied with a little bit of garlic powder and smoke salt. This meal has 18% sodium daily value per serving versus 30-40% of a lot of the meals available on the market. We liked how we could add salt to taste and not feel overwhelmingly thirsty after finishing the meal. This turned out to be very satisfying and one of our favorite meals!

Too spicy for the trail

I was very excited to try this meal. GTG meals have been highly rated, and the ingredient list on this looked perfect. I'm a huge fan of okra, and enjoy all the spices used. So into my pack it went for a 7 day backpacking trip. But when it came time to enjoy this meal, I was in for an unpleasant surprise. This meal is too spicy for the trail. More spicy than any gumbo I've ever had, and up there with "Thai hot". Remixing everything didn't help. In the end, I had to force myself to eat each spoonful. At least the sunset was spectacular.

Good Spicy Chicken Gumbo!

Disclosure: It's still too cold and rainy to go camping in western Washington (end of May) so I made this freeze dried dish in the comfort of my home. Boiling water was poured into the pouch and sealed for it's required 15 minutes. It's quite soupy so it's best eaten in a bowl. It's got big chunks of okra in it which is cool. The chicken is not so obvious, There's a lot of white rice, too. It's spicy! It ranks a 2 out of 3 on their spice-meter. I'd say it's more like a 2+. It needed something taste-wise and I tried a sprinkling of salt (I usually never add salt to food) and it improved the overall taste tremendously. So a little container of salt might be good to take on a camping trip. The portions for 2 people are generous. If taken camping in an RV a bed of additional rice might even be nice. I like the fact that the ingredient list incudes none of those chemicals one can't pronounce. No MSG. Every single ingredient is real food!

Hearty with a serious kick!

I was impressed with both the size of the portions and the quality of the food. The instructions were spot on and easy. These aren't ready quickly so don't use them if you're in a rush. But if you are relaxing after a day on the trail, these are quite nice. The chicken turned out nicely for dehydrated. Normally I'd expect a rubbery texture, but this surpassed all expectations for texture and consistency. For the portions, the package says it has 2 portions. I normally assume the portioning of backpacking meals is on the small side, and that I can eat 2 portions easily. I was not able to finish the full pack of food in one sitting. Taste-wise, I did find this to be a bit heavy on the spicy side. It tasted good, but the spice did overpower the other flavors a bit and might be too much for some. Overall this is an excellent product I wouldn't hesitate to pack again, especially on a winter or colder camping or backpacking trip.

Where’s the Chicken??

I’m not going to say that this meal is so horrible that it deserves a 2 or 1 star rating. I definitely like the flavor and the spicyness(I like spicy food but I get that many do not ). The meal is very okra and rice laden but in all the bites I took there was no chicken to be found. I could taste a chicken flavor but no chunks of chicken at all. I like okra as well and I like Gumbos but this Gumbo leaves much to be desired. This will certainly fill you up and heat you up on the trail but texture wise and meat protein wise it’s a dud. It’s average in my view and would not choose this again to take on a camping trip.

Okra!

I like Good To Go meals for the depth and complexity of flavors, but this one may almost have too much of both. I don't think I've ever had a dehydrated meal with such a large quantity of fresh vegetable, in this case okra, which was quite pleasant. The spice level was fine but the overall seasoning started feeling a little overdone by the time I was finishing this one. My trip mate was having their Thai Curry and I was certainly envious - while this one was good, the Thai Curry is much better. As with all Good To Go meals, the single serving isn't really enough but the two-serving was work to finish.

Where's The Salt!?!?

This is one of 4 different meals I was given to review by REI. I haven't been able to hit the trails this summer so instead I took the meals to the office one weekend and asked my group of coworkers to have a taste and let me know what they think. All meal packs were rehydrated for ~25 minutes as I find that the manufacturer suggested time is rarely enough no matter what elevation you're at. The volume of water added is exactly what is stated on the bag, measured with a scale. The gumbo severely lacks salt. We thought that it had a good spice level, but we're all very attuned to cajun food. I can't believe how bad the salt level is. I'd hate to have to choke this down at the campsite if I didn't have salt handy. Unanimous decision from the office crew, will not buy this one ever.

Chicken Gumbo - WOW

The Good To Go Chicken Gumbo is the best meal yet. I have spent years eating and perfecting the art of packable meals. From my time in the USMC "doctoring up" the first versions of MRE's (#1 & #2 were the dehydrated pork and dehydrated beef patty respectively and were the best to improve), to our first experimentation with squad meals heated by boiling fully consituted pans of food, this particular meal is unbeatable. Flavor for days, spice (but not overly so), heat (but not too hot), texture (not mushy to too hard). Good To Go.....you have near perfection in this dish. I would buy this and have it for dinner as a home meal in 15 minutes.

Very Strong and Spicy

This one does say that the spice level is two chilies out of three - definitely heed that warning! It had a real kick - too much for me, especially as a stand-alone dish. The instructions were easy to follow. I added the boiling water, stirred, then re-sealed the pouch. After the required amount of time (12 minutes) it was still pretty crunchy. By the time I had seconds, another 15 minutes had passed and it was a lot better - not crunchy at all. I'll wait double the time initially next time. The food came out piping hot, and the portions were generous. It was just so spicy that I couldn't eat very much of it.

Hearty & Filling!

Double Chicken Gumbo was great! I enjoyed the okra and real chicken. The proportion of rice was perhaps a bit heavy for my taste, but this certainly helped the meal to be filling. There is a perfect amount of spice, however if you’re not into spicy food this may be too much for you. I’d certainly purchase this product once it hits the market. Cooked to perfection following the directions on the packaging.
