This is my first pair of hiking shoes. They are lighter than boots and more substantial than running shoes. The support is perfect. My bad heal has no pain after 17 miles. The best feature is the tread on the sole; absolutely no slippage. I've used these only this summer and have hiked on rock, sand, gravel, dirt and mud. I can't attest to their use around water. Overall, a great shoe for long summer hikes in the forests and mountains.
These have been great for fast, long hikes over tough terrain. They're lightweight, breathable, supportive, and fit like a sneaker. These are not waterproof (which is good for long hikes because they dry quickly, much faster than waterproof hikers), and have a smaller toe box than other merrells - they're not narrow by any means, I think merrels tend to have big roomy toe boxes and these are more snug and streamlined. Great hiker!
I did day hikes all over Switzerland in these, and they were very comfortable. For this trip, with some rain and wet conditions, I wish I had gotten waterproof, but my feet never got soaked. I think I'll like these more breathable shoes, rather than the waterproof versions, for most of my hiking in the US. I have very narrow feet, and hiking shoes just aren't made to accommodate that, so I wore 2 or 3 pairs of medium to thick socks, and that worked fine.
First time I wore these was on an 18 mile hike. They were very comfortable.
Received these as a gift and love them. Would recommend.
Happy to have a very comfortable, supportive shoe in a solid color.
