Great for training indoors
I've had the Kinetic Road Machine Smart Control Trainer for a couple months and at this point I am very happy with it. The instructions that came with the trainer were OK as it is enough to get you started with the Kinetic app on a smartphone. I use the trainer with Zwift software and I didn't understand that a link on my iphone was needed to connect to my computer. Now that I know how to get everything working, I'm happy as it makes indoor training very bearable. The trainer is stable and quiet.
Love It!
I purchased this to use with Zwift and so far have had a good experience. First off, it is practically silent, the only noise I can here is from the drive train on my bike. The flywheel provides an excellent feel and the unit gives plenty of resistance at the top end. It did come with a free sub to the Kinetic Fit app which I have not tried yet (only to update the firmware). The frame is built solid and I was able to hook up my bike in about 10 minutes including the time it took to change the skewer. Overall a great product and seems to live up to the Kinetic reputation.
Doesn't work with Swift or TrainerRoad
I bought this about 6 months ago. It is a huge disappointment. Sure, it will pair with both Zwift and TrainerRoad, however, it fails to interact "smartly". You will fly up hills without feeling any change in resistance. Similarly, you can crank up the rpm's with no penalty whatsoever. I can safely say, this is simply a "dumb" trainer. After purchasing and using, I did more research to determine other user experiences, and they are the same. Many have contacted Kinetic directly and received assurances that Kinetic is working on firmware fixes. Perhaps they will eventually figure this out, but in the meantime, they keep marketing this "dumb" trainer. REI would do well to discontinue this item.
Absolutely fantastic ERG trainer.
Works great with Zwift, Trainerroad, FulGaz, and Rouvy. I've been using mine for 5 years now and it is still working great. A little magnet flew out of it after about 2 years but Kinetic instantly sent me a replacement and told me where it probably came from, and fixed it right away. Power matches up well when I tried it with my own power meter. It's also very quiet. Kurt Kinetic was king of rollers and trainers for a long time, and they still make a great product.
Not the Leader
I have been using this for 4 months. I would break the rating down into 2 areas which make up virtual cycling. 1) Smart Machine design and durability- I'd give this a solid 5 stars. It is well built and I had no issues setting it up, riding on it and noise is minimal. It is very well designed. Probably the best available. 2) Functionality/Interfacing with 3rd party- very disappointed 2 stars. I purchased this solely for virtual training as a smart trainer, which should simulate riding efforts and show power stats. This trainer only has Bluetooth capability and doesn't have Ant+. Sufferfest, a major virtual training app doesn't support Kinetic Smart trainers. So you could use The Sufferfest videos but it's like watching a cycling video without any data capture. Zwift works fine with it but a recent Zwift update with a newly released calibration function excludes Kinetic Smart trainers. For some reason, the virtual people aren't playing nice with Kinetic or vice versa. I'm not sure why but it's disappointing that software and hardware don't communicate and work or more to the point, the hardware you just spent $600 on isn't supported by those who run the connecting software. While Kinetic has a very remedial training app, it has very little interactive media and in fact suggest Sufferfest videos. Awkward. If I had to do it all over again I'd probably go Wahoo. The virtual software players seem to work more easily with them.
Don't buy.
I purchased this Smart trainer last month and can not recommend this to anyone. Firstly the customer service is abysmal as I was back and forth with them for a weak to get the trainer to calibrate. Once that was done I proceeded to use it with Zwift. The cadence, speed, and power were all over the place and extremely off the mark. After doing a 80 min ftp test my trainer was telling me I only did 10 miles. Thankfully REI gave me a full refund.
not for the nerd or racer.
TLDR if it flakes out unplug it for a min plug back in and start riding again. it works 95% of the time but when it flakes out it is spectacular. Never change the trainer difficulty mid ride. riding rolling hills the resistance went up climbing but didnt lessen on the down hill and by the 4th hill I was out of the saddle at 5 mph going downhill.
