Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best. Absolutely Perfect. I travel extensively professionally & leisurely. I've been searching for years to find the perfect / dual purpose pack. This. Is. It! It's the ideal size, airport friendly, VERY comfortable, and holds a TON (especially if your a seasoned packer). I can easily pack for a full work week on the road, while shifting purposes to the outdoors seamlessly when desired. I'd always loved this product, but was hesitant because of the computer sleeve location. This years model snugs it right up against your back (where it should be & almost creates its own frame), and has other nice updates too. Well done, Osprey. THANK YOU!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best affordable carry on bag I have owned multiple carry on type bags and never found one that stuck. I generally found maximum carry on size (22x14x9)-ish bags to be too large for 1-2 nights' travel and most briefcases or backpacks made no accommodation for separating clothing from computers and electronics. This bag makes all of the correct compromises at an affordable price. It isn't too big, has a dedicated laptop slot near your back, has spots for your electronics without having to unpack your clothes, and easily fits in the smallest overhead bins on commuter planes. They finally stopped saying that their darkest bag was 'black', when it was actually gray (I had previously purchased a 'black' Porter 46). The new black is actually black. I would like to see them add a couple of zippered slots on the outside compression panels for a small umbrella and/or water bottle. I would compare this in utility to something like the Western Flyer, although the external compression does make for a less business-friendly look. Nevertheless, I am using this for business travel and feel comfortable taking this to meetings as a briefcase. It is fairly cramped for a 12x18 travel clothes folder,so I would downsize to the smaller folder in the future.

How is this pack different from the $110 model?  What features are new and is there anything left out?

Asked by: Mettle2
The new Porter 30 has more padding on the sides. The laptop sleeve has also been moved more toward the back panel of the pack.

Does the Porter 30 have load lifters like the Porter 46? The old one doesn't; it would seem necessary on the new one for bag/zipper integrity given the location of the zipper for the rear laptop compartment.

Asked by: gear junkie
I received this version in the mail this week and it does not have load lifter straps. It would be nice if it did though.

Does the new laptop sleeve open independently or do you have to unzip the main compartment or another part of the pack to get to it?

Asked by: jon1
The new compartment is in between the backpack and the harness stow pocket. It has it's own zipper so you can access it at anytime, you can not access it from inside the main compartment.

Are there anymore images/video that will be posted to show the differences between the two versions of the pack? I purchased last years version of the Porter 30 and would like to know the differences and whether it's worth it to get the new one instead.

Asked by: eterriquez
The new version of the Porter 30 has more protective foam on the sides of the pack. The laptop sleeve was also moved to the rear of the pack. These were the only changes made to the newer version.
