I bought this bag a couple weeks ago, I've gotten 3 good long hikes in with it, and I am very pleased with the bag, it keeps my back cool, easy to access gear, and soooo light, I do wish it had a top lid cover, but other than that, I couldn't be any more happier with it
Used this for a full New England Winter season and couldn't be happier. The extra weight of zippers is more than offset by the ease of reaching extra layers and other stuff inside the main bag. Plenty of ways to lash an ice axe or poles onto the bag as well. And with a little creative use of shock cord, clips, and cord locks, snowshoes ride securely using the clipping points. 34 liters is the perfect size for extra layers, hardshells, extra water, and a stove, fuel, and snacks. Easy to lash a small emergency sit/sleeping pad onto the bottom and the top pocket has plenty of room for safety items. Three New Hampshire Summits under its belt and I couldn't be happier. The zippers worked well down to -15° F and even in a day of freezing rain, and all the plastic and buckles survived the cold.
Great trampoline style suspension. Very light. Comfortable. Still can hold a lot of gear. Love the large opening that reveals all contents of bag with 3 zips to be able to open a section at a time (just the top, just the side, just the bottom, or the entire opening of the bag). No integrated rain cover, which would have been nice, but not a deal breaker. If you're considering any day/overnight packs in this price range, don't miss this offering.
I recently purchased this pack while traveling to Wenatchee National Forest, and after my Millet pack bruised my spine. I didn’t have time to conduct proper research on the best pack to buy in this size & price range, but thankfully it lived up to the recommendation by the REI staff. It’s extremely comfortable and includes great features, like the wrap-around zipper and well ventilated back panel. It’s also incredibly light weight but seemingly very well constructed. This pack is awesome and worth a try if you’re in the market.
I had already owned the Kompressor Star and it's great for day hikes, and I wanted something similar for long hikes. Then I can across this pack. I fit everything I need it this pack and my 3 person tent on the bottom (Normally I use a much smaller tent when I'm solo). This pack handled it all no problem.
I've used this for a couple months now and like the size (it can hold a lot), the weight (it's very light), and the style (it has everything I need in terms of straps, hooks, etc.). I especially like how the zipper opens extra wide and you can open it from the bottom. The only negative I've found is that it doesn't stand up very well when I put things in and take things out of the pack. But I'm really happy with it otherwise.
This is an amazing pack loaded with cleaver features making like on the trail so much easier. The three zippered main compartment makes packing and finding gear a snap without unloading everything. The compression straps use cleaver quick release ladder locks, allowing you to quickly unlatch the straps and even change their position. This is a great feature for mountain summits when you might need to strap some awkward gear to the outside of your pack and stow/retrieve it efficiently. The lid is simple and hassle free. Hipbelt and shoulder straps are comfortable enough for loads up to 30-35 lbs. This pack does have some down sides, namely the one size fits all nature of it. I am an average height and build at 6' and 175 lbs, but had a hard time figuring out a way to wear this pack. Unless I shorten the shoulder straps nearly completely, the bottom of the pack sits uncomfortably on my tail bone. I was able to remove the frame/framesheet and manipulate them to better fit my back, but still have to wear the pack really high for maximum comfort. That being said once I get everything adjusted it carried really well around the 25-30lb range I have been testing it in. The materials also seem to be a little on the fragile side. After only 20 miles of hiking I am already seeing wear on mesh components including the back and near the hip belt. Definitely not recommended for any off trail excursions. Another minor quibble is the packs tendency to fall over easily, but since this isn't a top loader this isn't a huge deal. Ice tool loops are a little tight as well as the attachment points up top, again, very minor quibble. All in all this pack has an amazing feature set making it very versatile for weekend overnighters to alpine summits. If this pack fits you comfortably its an easy choice, hopefully Marmot will offer it in a t least a couple torso lengths in the future.
I have had this backpack for years now and it is pretty much indestructible. It is light weight when empty and has a nice cage & net in the back that keeps air flowing between you and the backpack e.g. when riding an MTB. I have loaded it with heavy batteries for trail work and hung weed whackers of the side of it. The ties are very easy to use and quick to tie something up and release again when needed. It has a top pocket for important essentials and an open rear pouch for stuffing something like a rain jacket to easily grab. The side pockets for water bottles are easy to use too and straps can be used to secure them for wilder rides. Truly wished Marmot would still sell this backpack or bring it back again as mine starts aging and I can't find an as amazing backpack as this.
So versatile, sturdy materials and could not believe how much I could stuff in there. The best feature is the zipper that runs across the top AND down the side. Much easier to access things deep in the bag without unpacking the whole thing. Very pleased.
I tend to pack for a backpacking or day hike leaning towards a minimalist or taking as little as possible but prepared for what ever nature may have in our path. I am able to pack my sleeping bag, change of clothing, food, gear, tools, and jacket in the main compartment. I use the straps on the sides to carry my 5lb tent and my sleeping pad on the other side. Sunglasses, knife, flashlight and other essentials on the top pocket. With room to spare and compressing the bag makes my back feel like I am carrying not much at all. Only one request, add a compression strap on the top of the bag.
