Size chart

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for front-country ice and modern boots Compared to what everyone else calls "mountaineering" socks (including Smartwool actually), these are WAY thinner. Keep in mind that most mountaineering boots nowadays use an integrated gaiter design that keeps your feet plenty warm and allows you to actually size them for a thinner technical sock like this, instead of a traditional heavy crew-sock for warmth. If you go with thick socks for cushion instead, your mileage may vary depending on your boot and activity. I haven't tried these on multi-day backcountry trips yet. This sock has a nice amount of compression across the foot and calves, all the way up to your knee. I used Smartwool's online size chart and the fit was perfect for me. Zero slip. These socks also breathe really well, probably better than any other sock I've worn for ice climbing in Colorado. Finally, the teal/orange color is a welcome departure from grey and black. Love 'em!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Way too tight The first pair I bought was for my shoe size but it turned out to be extremely tight! So if you want them order a size bigger. And even when I went to the bigger size they are kind of tight. They are thin so not good shock absorbing for mountaineering. Warmth average. Color and design is a beauty. Wearing it on cold city days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hi-tech socks for modern climbing boots! Brought two pairs of these with me to Alaska this season and they pair exceptionally well with the newer climbing boots that are coming out these days (Sportiva G2 SMs, G5s, etc). Warmth was never an issue and I liked the super snug fit they provided - no seam rubbing at all with these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smartwool, smart winter Durable, have held up nicely with some heavy snowboarding this season, I haven't had good experience with Smartwool's running socks, bought 4 pairs and they all got holes after wearing them for short time. These socks, however, have kept my feet warm and holding up nicely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Knee high socks Just the right height and just the right compression. Hard to find height and need compression socks due to injury and these are one of a few pairs that have met requirements.

How does the padding of these compare with the (a) SW Mountaineering Extra Heavy Crew Socks and (b) SW PHD Outdoor Heavy over the calf socks? Both in the "amount" and in the "distribution". Thanks.

This sock is a light cushion sock with targeted high density cushion in high pressure locations around the heel and ball of the foot. It has a light design over the top of the foot to promote aggressive venting and compression in the heel and calf to promote recovery. Overall this is a lighter less bulky sock then the ones you mentioned and is designed specifically with high-energy, fast-paced mountaineering activities in mind.
