Find the right size bike

• Use age as a rough guide but measure the child’s height and inseam (crotch to floor) for a more accurate fit
• Check the brand sizing chart to match measurements to wheel size
• If you can, try out the bike in person
• Choose a bike that fits now, not one to grow into

Four bike types

• Balance bikes: Teach balance and steering for the youngest riders
• Training wheel bikes: Build confidence while learning to ride
• Cruiser bikes: Wide tires for paved paths and neighborhood rides
• Mountain bikes: Designed for trails and rough terrain

Features

• Weight and frame: Lighter bikes (aluminum frames) are easier for kids to handle
• Wider tires: Add stability, traction and cushion
• Brakes: Coaster brakes are easier for younger kids to use; handbrakes appear on larger pedal bikes and require more hand strength.
