Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beat's my Patagonia all around Bought this as one layer for a 12 day trip to WY and Yellowstone over Christmas. This was so warm and cut the wind so much I rarely needed my Northface larger coat. In Cody WY for 4 days it did not get above 10 degrees with 40 mph winds and this was really all I needed. And I was doing wildlife photography where I would stand for over an hour waiting for the shot. Granted I had other layers on underneath but this jacket was way over my expectations. It was an absolute steal at the sale price! And with it's pack down size it's super. Ended up buying my wife and son one. I have a more expensive Patagonia down sweater and it can't do what this one does and is much more expensive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight,Warm,Packable and Comfy. I couldn't resist the price and bought one online. I was skeptical that it would actually pack down small enough and be light enough to find it's way into my day hike pack. I don't have a lot of room and only carry a small amount of necessities and food (the just in case stuff). I went out hiking in the Gorge shortly after we got some fresh snow. I took it with "just in case". The temp dropped to about 33-34 and the wind picked up gusting to 25mph. I threw it on over my base layer and a light fleece pull over. It's wind resistant, water resistant and I was plenty warm. I gave it 4 stars because nothing is absolutely perfect...Right?? Definitely worth the money!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Cold to Very Cold Winter Coat I bought this to wear over a lightweight fleece and synthetic t-shirt while out and about in an urban environment this winter. So far I've worn it while walking in 32F to 10F temps with moderate wind and I haven't been able to tell I'm outside. Excellent construction with a modern, sporty fit. Not frumpy like some heavier down jackets you see around. You will get some down coming through the jacket and getting on your backpack, mid-layer, etc. This is my first down jacket (I've traditionally worn shells, but this has been my first cold winter after a couple years in Texas and I've become cold-phobic), so I'm not sure if that is typical. My guess it it is. I would recommend this coat even at full price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best fit for fat guy I had gotten a Under Armour Jacket that I returned because it was too tight. I'm 5'10" 240lb. I found this jacket and the fit is fine. I've only had it a couple of weeks, but I like it a lot. 2 big interior pockets, 3 exterior pockets. I like the weight not to heavy or light. While I have had no problem, I do have concern the zipper maybe too light.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good jacket, but down feathers pop out The jacket is true to size, fits well, and is relatively designed well. However, over the course of a single day wearing it around the home, I started noticing lots of little down feathers popping out of the jacket. This is not the case with my other down jackets, nor has it happened over the course of years. For that reason, I chose to return it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than the alternatives I was looking for a replacement for a Columbia coat that I've owned for over ten years. It certainly did the job, but new technology and lighter materials make all the difference. I compared all the major brand names, but this Stratocloud does all of the same things, is incredibly lightweight, windproof and water-resistant, and fashionable without the high price. Plus I bought it on sale for 50% off the already better price. Can't really beat it unless you just have to have a particular logo for another $100 or more. One thing: I did buy the large based on the size chart, but returned it for a medium. Still room for a thin layer or two under it, so it may run big. If you're on the border, go with the smaller size.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from warm, good fit, poor construction I've managed to get one year out of this jacket, but its durability declined after 6 months. The down feathers are popping through the seams everywhere, because the seams aren't sewn properly and sealed. The outer fabric water resistance was gone after 7 months so I had to treat it with scotch guard every two days. However, I think if I had washed this jacket by hand and let it dry with air, it may have lasted longer. The price point is good. The only other complaint is that the outer fabric needs to be a little more durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very warm, very light This was the first down jacket I'd ever bought. I couldn't be more happy. It's very warm and very light. It compresses easily and fits in small spaces--like a day pack. The only drawback I've found is that, on occasion, small pieces of down work their way through the outer layer of the jacket. When this happens, you'll have small feathers floating around. This isn't too big of an issue though. I recommend this jacket.

Is it common for the down to come out through the fibers? Is there a there a way to stop it?

Asked by: summerdog
It is normal for down products to have feathers come out through the material from time to time. If you find a feather or down clusters coming through the fabric in large amounts, it's best to contact REI for a return or exchange. You can contact REI by using the following resource: https://www.rei.com/help/return-policy.html

How does this compare to the Mountain Hardwear Stretchdown?  Seems similar but at a much lower cost.

Asked by: AdamTG
Both jackets have water-resistant down, but the Stratocloud is a blend with synthetic insulation mixed in as well. The StretchDown Jacket has a stretchy fabric that aids in mobility. Both jackets are very warm and are an excellent choice for cold, wet weather.

QdtD pocket do you use to self pack this jacket. I can't seem to figure it out

Asked by: Capndead
Left hand pocket that says REI inside and has zipper pulls on both sides. Feed the jacket from the inside so it becomes a pouch that says REI on the outside.

Just how "windproof" is this, particularly compared with more conventional down jackets?

Asked by: PapaLima
This jacket is windproof to 60 MPH thanks to the Pertex Quantum nylon shell. Depending on the shell fabric of other down jackets, this is a significant improvement when it comes to blocking the wind.

I read the answer with the detergent recommended for washing this jacket. The jacket itself just says "powder detergent". My question is: will the suggested detergent (Nikwax Down Wash) get rid of stains? Grease, dirt, or other?

Asked by: Joe PHX
While powdered detergent is recommended, liquids like the Nikwax Down Wash will do an excellent job getting rid of grease and dirt.

I am looking for a jacket for my husband that will keep him warm in the 0-15 degree (F) range with mild activity (i.e. walking). Is this jacket warm enough for that or is there a warmer coat you can suggest?

Asked by: FairKat
We do not provide temperature ratings on clothing because warmth depends on so many different variables including activity level, metabolism, perspiration as well as the other clothing layers you are wearing. However, this is a well-insulated jacket that should keep most people warm in cold weather with proper layering.

Asked by: Rocky31
Based on a size large, the back length of this jacket is 29 inches and will change about 1 inch per size. The sleeve length for a large measures approximately 35 inches. We recommend measuring your sleeve and torso length and comparing those numbers with the size chart attached to the jacket.
