I'm not young so much anymore so sleeping comfort is Priority One for me. I chose the longer bag and it was so worth it. Just did my first backpacking trip in several years into Lava Beds National Monument (Tule Lake, California area), April 2017. Temperature went down to frost level during the night; I was sleeping under the stars. With thermal underwear on legs and body, good socks, and medium ski jacket I slept quite comfortably in this bag. Best of all was the extra length and full shoulder width. Bag is bulky to pack if no compression sack; compression sack is a definite must if backpacking with this bag. Weight is perfect in terms of roominess.
I hardly ever give 5 stars, but this sleeping bag has earned it. Good price, proven brand, and very warm. I didn't use it in 20 degree wether but I figure that's it's absolute max. I slept in 30-40 degree wether and fully clothed and I was definitely toasty. The bag it comes with is adequate and the sleeping bag is actually really thin. One of my best buys from REI.
Already had the dolomite double for my 6&8 year old daughters to share. Bought this for my boyfriend who went on a week long tent camping trip in Colorado this June with us. He is 6'2 and about 215 lbs and this was perfect fit. Nights got in the low 30's, but sleeping in sweats with a tiny propane tent heater this was the perfect amount of warmth for us all! Also-one night a whole 20oz water bottle got spilled on our bags and I was so impressed how easily we were able to dry them. Didn't soak in! We also use these bags for tent camping summers in the Midwest! When not sleeping inside them, they provide a nice cushion between us and the hard ground. Very easy to pack up for how plush they are!
I have been living with a 20 degree mummy bag for years, and have frozen and never slept well. I had a chance to test this bag out right after purchasing it. I ended up shoving some clothes in the bottom (which I did in my mummy bag as well) and ended up sweating at some point in the evening, and was perfectly warm the rest of the night. When I woke up, nice and toasty in the am, and asked my family how they slept, they shared that they had been cold most of the night. SCORE! I was finally warm on a camping trip! #winning
I've had several North Face synthetic fill bags, various temp ratings. All were mummy. Decided to set my feet free in a rectangle bag. I bought this unexpectedly, it was during a sale. Was camping with my brother around 9k feet in the White Mountains. To my pleasant surprise, this has turned out to be my new all time favorite. I've only camped in summer, with high altitude cool nights. Felt like I was sleeping in my bed. I love this sleeping bag for another reason. I've laundered it several times. It does great! After drying it, I hang it to puff the loft up. Don't compare this to a 300+ down bag. It's not that. It's a wonderful, good quality multipurpose sleeping bag. I intend to take it backpacking, on a short trip, for the fun of it. Love the freedom of my legs and feet. I'm sure a lot of the recent quilt converts users are discovering that, as well. Have had no zipper issues - people who are impatient with zippers are going to complain about any zippers. Love it.
I just purchased this bag and look forward to using it for many years to come! I had recently purchased the Dolomite 40 bag, but it was just too thin to my liking and not quite warm enough for me, so REI was most gracious in taking it back. I'm sure my new Dolomite 20 is going to be perfect! I'm 6'1" and 175lbs, so I like the long length and width. I do need to know what size compression sack to purchase for it, so I'd appreciate any advice!
I bought this bag because I just don’t like the restrictive feel of a mummy bag. I was concerned I’d be giving up some warmth but boy was I surprised. This past weekend I backpacked into the Linville Gorge while the high was 33 degrees and was forecasted to get down to 22 degrees. The wind was in the 30-40 mph range that night. We didn’t have a thermometer but I tell you it was super cold. I had purchaed a liner for the bag but ended up getting out of the liner because it was just too warm. All night I stayed very toasty with the exception of a little cool spot where I was up against my tent wall for an hour or two sleeping. Overall im extremely happy with this bags ability to keep me comfortable in very cold temps. Hope this helps.
This bag was terrible for the temp rating. I used it for a week in Colorado (July 19-25th). One night got down into mid to high 40's..I was freezing every night, temps typically in the 50's. I was really excited about this bag when I got it, thought it would be prefect for this trip. This bag did not live up to it's temp rating at all. If you get cold at night this bag is not for you. I had 3 layers on, as well as socks and a hat and had to use a heavy duty poncho as a blanket over the bag to stay warm. Not a good buy at all. Wish I could give a negative star rating for this product.
My husband and I both received these sleeping bags as a wedding gift from a relative, and we are very happy with them! We recently moved to a very hike and camp friendly area and wanted to start camping so that we could better explore the area, as well as the rest of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The bags keep us warm, sometimes too warm at night, so I would think that they have an appropriate heat rating. If anything, I will become too hot at night and have to unzip the bag to let in some cool air, even on windy and stormy nights, but that is not the bags fault, we just have the wrong heat rating. But I would rather be a little too warm at night than freezing! We love our sleeping bags and I'm sure they will get a lot of use out of them over the years.
I like this bag, but it does not keep me as warm as I'd expect from this temp rating. Into the low 40s I get cold without additional layers and a shell on the bag. Good bag for moderate temperature "car camping." I don't hate it, but am shopping for a better backpacking bag.
