Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Snowshoes I bought these snowshoes because I wanted the ability to carry heavy loads securely up the mountain in loose snow, these shoes did not disappoint. They contour to the terrain, have great crampons, a tight and secure shoe harness, and they distribute the weight evenly and securely. They are bulky and wide, and take a bit of getting used to, but are very well built and rugged. Being wide, if you're following a path already cut through the snow, guaranteed these snowshoes are wider and you'll be cutting new sides into the path making it slightly awkward for you, but more enjoyable for those behind you with the slimmer snowshoes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Snowshoes, with one caveat I've finally had a chance to use these (and the Hikr model as well) extensively on different types of terrain and snow. The Rangrs are fantastic; lightweight, tons of float on powder, and I've actually come to like the simple binding system quite a bit. I know some reviews elsewhere criticize that component, so I'll address it. It is not a super easy "boa" type closure, and it is prone to a bit of twisting, but it is durable, customizable, and comfortable. It's also easy to initially secure with thinly gloved hands, and easy to adjust with larger gloves. You have to be careful to not secure the binding with your boot too far forward, or your toe will work its way under the lip of the snowshoe. I was able to use a size 11.5 Danner hiking boot, without issue. The float and light weight are huge pluses with the Rangr. You do not get anywhere near that kind of float with the smaller Hikrs. I would use the Rangr for any serious backcountry treks, and save the Hikr for the trails or groomed slopes. I happen to really like the look of the Fimbulvetr shoes (especially the Rangr), but many do not. While these shoes look wide, it was a non issue (in other words they're not much wider than standard platform snowshoes), and I found that I had a very easy and natural gait in these. The weight and shape of the shoe certainly helps with that. The "hinge" of these shoes is remarkably comfortable and natural, and as a previous reviewer mentioned, the flexible shoe deck really does conform to the terrain. The ONE thing I don't care for is the lack of a rear crampon. Descents on icy terrain or packed snow are VERY tricky in the Rangrs. I really wish Fimbulvetr would offer some sort of a retrofit kit to add a small rear crampon, it would make this the perfect shoe. The Hikr does have the rear crampon, but you're just not getting that crazy powder float with the Hikr model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic shoe This was my first snowshoe, and it's amazing. Light, comfortable gait, and confident steps.
