favorite go-to down jacket
I live in MN, so use of a down jacket is a must. This is my go-to jacket for most of the cold season when it is needed. It is lightweight, packable, easy to carry around with you once you get inside if you are running errands (or can stuff into its own little stuff sack). Versatile jacket that is warm enough for most applications unless you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time and then I have thicker/heavier down parkas that I use. I’ve never had any feathers leak out like with cheaper down coats and appreciate the high quality with which it is made. Couldn’t say enough positive things about my purchase. Highly recommend!
Ehhh . . . There are better options out there.
I bought this because I wanted a warm, lightweight, compressible jacket with a hood to wear hiking/backpacking and to wear around town. Patagonia clothing normally works pretty well for me, and I liked the navy color. Yes, this is pretty lightweight and is decently warm. However - it holds lots of static electricity, makes lots of crinkly sounds (think sun chips bags), and the torso is really long. The torso length was the deal breaker for me. Sent it back. I found something elsewhere (Montbell Thermawrap Pro jacket).
Nice but Light!
This is a very lightweight jacket that's fairly warm. I love that it has a hood! I mistakenly thought that it would offer just as much warmth but with less bulk, but Patagonia makes warmer jackets, also with 800-count down fill. I like this product a lot, but I'm returning it to get a thicker and warmer layer for backpacking in the Sierras. It's worked ok for me, but I need to layer it with lots of wool and sometimes a rain coat on top to be truly warm.
Great for Backpacking
This jacket is perfect for most 3-season trips. It's warm and packs down super small for stowing.
Ultralight, warm midlayer, BUT...
the Black one is smells and feels like geese trapped in a garbage bag. Black really looks and feels like a garbage bag. Functionally, it does the job. I would not depend on this for sub negative 40 type of weathers, but worn in layers with an outer shell, it keeps me warm and cozy on the slopes when snowboarding.
