Rated 5 out of 5 by from So comfortable from the first moment of lacing up These Solomon's are my first hiking boot. When I picked them out I was not in love with the look of them, but when I laced them up and tested them out I was sold from the first moment. I have never worn Solomon brand of shoes before but after purchasing these boots I bought a pair of Solomon trail runners also. These boots have a wonderful roomy toe box while at the same time provide the rest of my foot with perfect form fitting stability. I have worn these for a few day hikes in tough terrain, in and of creeks and varying elevation change and they are incredibly comfortable every moment and keep the feet dry. I am quite pleased with my purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great hiking boot I bought these shoes a few days before leaving for a trip to Olympic, Mt. Rainier and the North Cascades - I didn't have time for break in. Regardless, I hiked over 90 miles total in the course of 2 weeks, some overnight backpacking trips and some day hikes, and didn't have any sore spots or blisters. I usually wear an 8 or 8.5 but I went with the 8 and they felt great. The shoes I hiked in on an earlier trip this summer killed my feet after 9 miles…complete arch pain and blisters, so I knew I needed something different. The Salomons still felt good after a 17 mile day hike. I never got sick of putting them on!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty comfy Usually in hiking boots I find I want to size up half a size but these seem to run a bit big. I bought 7s, wore them around the house for about 10 minutes, realized they were too big and returned for 6.5s. I found my heel was slipping some and was concerned about blisters, but laced them using the heel lock technique and that seems to have done the trick. Took them on a 4 mile hike last weekend and they performed well. They are very comfy, and didn't give me any blisters. I did find the laces loosened a bit and tend to come untied without double knotting them so I might replace them. Overall, happy with my purchase after trying and return two other boots!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very comfortable hiking boot These are the most comfortable hiking boots I have purchased in a long time. I usually wear a size 8 and went up 1/2 size and they fit perfectly. My heel nests comfortably and my toes do not touch the top of the boot even when walking. The laces allow my foot to be made snug. They are a great fit. They have great traction along with the ability to bend with your foot. They are not super stiff. Most boots need to be broken in, but I have been walking and doing basic hikes since I purchased them about a month ago, and they fit like slippers. I didn't need much of a breaking in period at all. I would buy these boots/brand again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So comfortable! I tried on about 5 or 6 different brands of boots before I purchased these. I have a problem with my toes being a bit wide and rubbing in most boots and I have skinny ankles compared to my size 10 feet. Either the toe box on some boots was too narrow or the toe box was wide enough, but the boot wasn't snug enough around my ankles. This Salomon boot was perfect for my foot. Wide enough at the toes and good and snug around the ankle. I have had zero problems with these boots. I have worn them on shorter day hikes and hikes over 11 miles. I have hiked 4300 feet up a snowy steep mountain with crampons on. They are comfortable and sturdy. The sizing is spot on. I love these!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful fit, right out of the box I picked these up at the Silverdale store before heading out for a weekend of hiking in the (rather soggy) great outdoors of the Olympic National Park. I have a pair of Salomon XT Wings that I normally wear hiking, and these certainly live up to the comfort and grip that I've grown to expect from Salomon. The toe box is roomy, which is critical for toe comfort when you're hiking a descent with a steep grade (because no one likes that squished toe feeling when you get to the bottom.) These are true to fit, and have a good amount of cushion in the ankle supports to prevent rubbing. All in all, I put 18 miles on these boots this weekend, and have absolutely zero complaints about the fit, the look, and their ability to keep my feet dry in rain.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from makes hiking easy I just bought these boots. I needed a hiking shoe with ankle support and stability..these provide added bonus is that they fit beautifully. My only concern is that they are too hot for summer hiking, after a few miles my feet wanted out. My other complaint is that about four miles in, the right boot started making a "flapping" noise. Nothing structural seemed to be amiss but on every step there was this annoying noise. I thought it was just the day..but on the second hike, it was doing the same thing right away. I find it very irritating and will most likely exchange them for another pair. I think the flapping thing is a weird particular thing that would only happened with me - I would still recommend these boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super fit, straight out of the box Based on my experience with another pair of Salomon hiking boots, I ordered these GTX's just a few days prior to my Swiss Alps/Haute Route backpack trip. These shoes were a perfect fit, straight out of the box. Comfortable, durable and flexible for 7 days straight (~8-10 mi/3-5k elevation gain daily) in dry and wet conditions. Dried nicely when they did get wet, inside & out. One note of caution: I did hike with a heavier pack than my usual (25-28 lbs), and my ankles did feel it at the end of the day. I would still recommend these for backpacking, just with a slightly lighter pack. Since my return, I continue to hike in these boots in the NH Whites, the VT Greens & the NY ADKs, with hike distances ~12-15 miles and a day pack - and they are simply a great fit and a perfect shoe for me.

Can these boots be used with crampons?

Asked by: kickboxer429
Just a quick answer about traction devices, I used stabilizer type cleats all winter with these boots.  My cleats were too small for my bogs and kept slipping off so I put them on these boots. Wow, these were my best friend. Sub zero temps, waterproof and yucky conditions. My boots need a good bath after a couple of months of feeding horses and walking on slippery ice to mud.  So, while crampons may not work, the cleats will work for sure. And the boots are fantastic.

I plan on going on a snowshoeing trip over the weekend. I've had these shoes for a year now and they have been great in general, and in the rain.  They are listed as 'waterproof.'  Do you think it's good enough to use for snowshoeing?

Asked by: FranMac
These hiking boots can be used for snowshoeing but do not have added insulation for warmth.

I'm hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim in some of the hottest temps of the year. Are these breathable to withstand 100 degree temperatures?

Asked by: fayekim
The boots can handle the 100 degree temperatures but you should still expect your feet to perspire.

Hi! Leaving for Kenya for 10 weeks (Turkana Basin) on a field study. Would this be a good shoe for all day on feet, walking, digging, etc.? and comfortable and lightweight?

Asked by: WanderaJune
The X Ultra Mid II GTX Hiking Boots are a great hiking boot for wet and muddy trails. If you do not need a waterproof boot, we suggest looking for something non-waterproof that will be more breathable in hot weather.

What is up with the size chart? I usually wear an 39 / 8.5. According to that chart I would need a 7.5. That can't possibly be right. Do they run that big?

Asked by: Trecker
The size chart attached to these boots is a Salomon specific size chart and is accurate. Based on feedback and reviews, these boots have been known to run a half size large and true to width in the toe box.

Is this shoes made for bunion feet or arch support?

Asked by: Elvy
The X Ultra Mid II GTX Hiking Shoes are not specifically designed for feet with bunions. They will however provide a lot of support with the thermoplastic urethane shank.

I wear a European size 38 for running shoes and 37.5 in dress shoes. What size shall I order? I'll be trekking for about 2 weeks so not sure how much room to allow for foot swelling.

Asked by: AnnieHk
Based on your European shoe size, we recommend a 6.5 in the Ultra Mid II GTX Hiking Boots.

Good Afternoon, How are these on traction? I will be hiking the Half Dome in Yosemite, and wondered how these boots fare with traction of granite surfaces. Thank you, Jami

Asked by: jlherring
Salomon uses Contragrip rubber outsoles on the X Ultra Mid II GTX Hiking Boots. The tread provides great traction on a variety of different surfaces.
