Sizing Notes
Salewa footwear fits true to size and runs from medium to slightly narrow in width. For Mountaineering boots, Salewa recommends sizing up one half size to ensure comfort on long descents.
Salewa’s Alpine Fit incorporates a unique climbing lacing system that offers a large range of adjustability. To ensure a proper fit, Salewa recommends opening all laces through the forefoot as wide as possible before adjusting to your comfort, starting at the toes.

comfortable, sturdy...all around good boot
I really like the boot. Comfortable enough on trail, sturdy enough with a crampon. Although it should be noted that the weight listing is per boot, not for the pair...still the most comfortable mountaineering boot I've used
Nice shoe, but absolutely not waterproof
This is a great light shoe for crampons, but in my experience this newest model of the Rapace is absolutely not waterproof. In wet meadows, creek crossings or snow my feet get wet very, very quickly. I own three pair of hiking boots, and this one is by far the worst in waterproof. It was so bad that I suspected an issue with my specific pair, but I've confirmed the issue with our owners as well. It may still be a great boot for you. I still wear these boots, but mainly on dry summer days on trails and packed snow.
Excellent - And they fit
I have about 30+ miles with these so far. What I like is that they fit. For myself the Nepal Tops are narrow. Late model Trango series fit me very close, but still a hair narrow. Mtn Guide 9s were great, but way too heavy . Asolo is a bit narrow too, then long and clumsy. These boots come with an insert adapter that accommodates narrow feet if one needs to. I do not use the inserts, they would be way too narrow. Generally I wear a 42.5+ Euro and that may be a bit small on me with some boots. I got these boots size 44 Euro to accommodate my moldable insole with one layer of additional padding and heavy socks. For me that combo is just right in these boots. Width and volume is great then. The boots walk very well and are quite comfortable. I would not realize I have a near rigid boot on. They are about as precise in feel as a Garmont alpine boot but offer more useful toe box; this boot being not too chiseled in the toe. I would have continued to use Garmont boots if they actually cared about selling them in the USA. In sum, for me the boots are great - heaven set; finally a boot that truly fits. One comment. The sole appears rather thin as it is bounded to another base. I imagine I will have to have these resoled far more often than any other boot I've had. However, I think that is worth it with these boots. I give the boot 4 stars because it will take perhaps a year or more before I would be completely convince about the boots quality. At this time I do not see any defects in workmanship.
Great Backcountry Boots
These boots Rock. By far the most comfortable boots that I have owned. Light weight great support and good traction. The only issue I had was in the snow in the Sierras. The smaller footprint size of the sole punches through fairly easily (crampons needed) Still the best boots I've owned.
Great Mountaineering Boot for Summer Climbing!
I recently bought these boots and took them for their first test run on a one day climb of Middle Sister. This was a 14 mile round trip with 4600 ft of elevation gain over developed trail, scree, rock, and snow. These boots performed great. The temperatures were in the 40s and 50s so insulation wasn't an issue. They provided the comfort, protection, and feel I needed for everything I faced on the climb. They were great kicking steps in snow with and without crampons. This was an ambitious undertaking with brand new boots. I had only worn them around the house the previous day. These boots come with two sets of insoles which can be used to narrow the boot and raise your foot as necessary. I started the day with both sets of insoles in the boots for the tightest possible fit. I soon developed a blister on my heel. I removed one set of the insoles and continued on the climb. The boots immediately fit better and the blister was never a problem again during the climb. I really like the roominess of the toe box. I have a wider foot. It makes for a very comfortable shoe. While the boot is light it seems sturdy and the sole is the same vibrum that is found on more expensive boots. Lastly, the lacing system is excellent. The lower laces can be adjusted and they hold. The upper laces can have a different tightness than the lower laces. I like to keep my lower laces somewhat loose and my upper laces fairly tight. I recommend buying 1/2 size larger US. The boots work well and my toes don't bang against the front of the shoe on the way down. Only Suggestion would be to include 1/2 sizes in European. This boot is only made in full European sizes.
Not quite what I thought.
So the down and dirty. Bought these boots about a month ago and decided to break them in on an easy 6 or so round trip hike. First off they were not blister free right out the box like they claim. I have some Scarpa hiking boots that are the same euro size so I know they were the right size. No biggie tho.....I knew they just needed to be broke in a little and that was the case. I bought these boots just to do Mt. Rainier so my second hike I figured I would hike to camp Muir. They worked pretty good....no real blister problems and the boots are really light so things were looking up. I did a few more hikes and was really starting to like the boots more and more until I decided to go to the Olympics on labor day weekend. So what's probably the one thing you don't want to happen to your feet when you are on any hike? U don't want your feet to get wet. Well I headed up to Gladys divide after a rain and they just couldn't handle the water from the bushes and the general trail....and I'm not talking about walking thru creeks or anything. So it's a no go for these boots for Mt. Rainier. They are a much better boot to hike on the Wonderland trail or subalpine type trails but in my opinion they are not mountaineering boots just some decent hiking boots. Needless to say I'm glad I shop at REI because they will be going back. I already have my new LA Sportiva Trango Cube GTX boots on and they already feel like a better boot for the job.....can't wait to test them out!
Great on rocky terrain!
Overall this is a very high quality boot. I hiked in Salomon Quest 4 GTX for years and was very happy, BUT... when trekking in alpine terrain in the Tetons I felt like I needed more stability and support. The Rapace's are EXCELLENT in rock and on rock. Basically, if your trek/hike/mission is on or in rocky terrain and scree this is an amazing boot. Extremely good foot protection and stiffness needed for alpine routes. In these boots I always was 100% confident in taking the rocky path. The sole and upper absorb a beating and laugh about it afterwards. Very good traction. Despite it's stiffness it is very comfortable. That said.. my personal preference is for a boot with slightly more ankle support (up to 8 inches) and I probably should have sized up 1/2 size from 9.5 to 10 and layered in a thick sock. BUT, the customizable insole is a great concept and I played around with various combinations to get the right fit. Otherwise, a bombproof boot that eats rocky terrain for breakfast.
