Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent binoculars, minor quibble I researched a lot of binoculars and tested out different pairs. The Monarch 5 are a great balance between price and quality. I needed something for both daylight viewing as well as astronomy. Having used them now for both and compared them to my brother's 8x42 (different brand, similar price range) the Monarch build quality is higher, fully coated optics are crystal clear and work great in low light, and I enjoy the magnification bump, which is noticeable. My only minor quibbles are that eyepiece cap that goes over the eyecups is too loose and falls off easily. Since it's tethered to neck strap I won't lose it, but I have to be careful b/c I don't want them to come off in my bag or someplace and expose the lenses dust, grit, or impact. Other than that, the fit and finish everywhere else, including the objective lens covers are solid, and feel really well built. Overall really happy with these binoculars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get close to the wildlife These binoculars are easy to focus, reasonably lightweight, and have a sharp image. I am able to look at details of nearby items--about 2 meters away--and view distant birds and wildlife with good clarity. I notice a bit of image defocus toward the edges of image area. I have used them in a light rain and they worked well for that. The lens caps are good on the large end, but the cap to cover the eye pieces is very loose; it can't be depended upon to stay on the eyepieces. The case is a typical softcase. The strap is just long enough; a tall person might wish for a longer strap. It is well padded. This is the second pair of Nikon binoculars I have owned. Overall, good quality for the price but don't expect top-of-the-line optics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best birding bino! Hard to beat for the price. I bird late into the evenings and this thing keeps me out in the field. I recommend them anytime I see birders in the field. These get awesome reviews and definitely deserve them. I'm happy that REI got me outfitted into these. Between the glass, lightweight factor and the durability these things are perfect for wildlife observation/birding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Monarch 5 vs Prostaff 7 I purchased and have used both the Monarch 5 and the Prostaff 7 over the last 30 days. Both are excellent for bird watching with great clarity especially in the 7-15 foot "bird feeder range". Over time the Monarch 5 begins to win you over. slightly better optics, smaller size, great feel. A very good product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality Binoculars I was hesitant to purchase the 10x bionoculars due to the propensity to shake more while holding, but the clarity outweighs this potential obstacle. GREAT binoculars! Glad I bought them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Value for Excellent Binocs While I'm not the most experienced birder, I've found these to have excellent features for a relatively affordable price. They are very popular among many of the birders I've met for the same reason. I have no complaints so far!
