Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT option I purchased these binoculars last June to replace another pair of Monarchs that I had been using for more than 5 years. These binos are exceptional. The image is always clear, very bright and detailed. I work with birds professionally and so it is very important for me to be able to see exactly what I've got in front of me. These binos are also exceptionally well constructed for use in the field. The lenses are scratch resistant and the frame is very strong. I have had to clean mud and sand from them many times since last June, but have never had anything enter the binocular itself. These are a perfect fit for me and I recommend them to anyone and everyone looking for a mid-range bino.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seeing the world in 3d I bought these binoculars to begin birding after years of just guessing at features or using poor quality binoculars that were given to me. The image is crisp, the focus is fast, and they focus on near objects so you can watch insects too. They also will expand your sense of wonder by the enormously increased volume of space that you can look into. Sitting above Vernal Falls at Yosemite I could see wildflowers on canyon wall seeps and many water falls that were not apparent to the naked eye. I could see swallows far out in the valley. A week later I watched more than a dozen humpback whales lunge feeding off Montara State Beach. A week after that I used them to locate a fen on 10-mile Dune State Park. Until you start looking you won't know what you are missing. These are a bomber set of binoculars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Monarch 5 8x42 These binoculars blow my 10x50 Adlerblicks out of the water. They are noticeably clearer, sharper and more usable. They are a clear upgrade from the Monarch 3's. The compound lenses and better coatings make a real visual difference. They are light and easy to wear while hiking, even with a pack or camera bag. The flip-down front lens covers stay out of the way. I've rigged the rear cups to hang by one strap when I use them and rarely need them in use. I stretch the binocs out when I put them in their case and the rear caps stay put. Their otherwise loose fit isn't a problem. The focus works well for me with or without glasses. I don't have to fiddle with it. They can snap to focus easily and do not show any fringe even against strong backlight. They focus down to about 9 feet. Owning these is like going from an achromat telescope to a model with ED glass. Not quite perfect, like Leica or Zeiss, but very enjoyable still. You will expand your excuses to look at birds, landscapes and even the night sky. Jupiter's moons are easily resolved.

I want to know what is the longest distance you can see with these binoculars

Asked by: Ray Sheppard
Nikon does not list a maximum distance for these binoculars and the magnification is 8 power. Images will appear 8 times closer than it would to your unassisted eye. For example, if you view a deer that stands 200 yards away from you through 8x binoculars, it will appear as though it were 25 yards away (200 divided by 8).
