Sizing notes

For gaiters, please refer to your shoe size.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good quality, bad sizing The quality of the gaiters is great. But if you're trying to get the right size by looking at the "boot size" on the website (rei.com), they won't fit right. I was figuring "boot size" meant the size of hiking boot you'd wear, but I guess they're talking about a different type of boot. I wear a size 9.5 hiking boot, so I ordered Large gaiters. I ended up exchanging for Mediums, and could have probably fit the Smalls best. Larges wrapped so far around my calves that the velcro strip didn't match up, and Medium size was nearly the same way. It seems like they should be sized by the circumference of your calves. That would be the best way to make sure they fit properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Required Some say that Goretex is needed when it come to gaitors. I don't know for sure. When picking a size, I found that none of the brands helped with deciding what size is best. After some trial and error, I found that the size is reffered to the size of your calves. It's all about your calves!!!! I wear my gaitors all year round. They protect my boots, my panths from getting wet when goeing through brush that is wet or even damp. My legs do not get extra warm or hot when wearing these. That's why I wear them year round. So worth it in the long run.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Armor For My Legs I love these gaiters. Wore 'em for a month through the Desert (with a capital D), couldn't tell you what it feels like to have sand in your shoes. They are bomber. I leave all kinds of traces when I am marching through the brush with invincible armored Crocodile legs. Seriously, these are great. I must be getting old if I'm this excited about... gaiters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OR Croc Gaiters, THE industry standard With little technical tweaking over the years, the OR Crocodile Gaiters are the standard that other companies hold themselves to. These are first mentioned when one says the word 'gaiters' and with good reason. I have had the same pair for almost 15 years; and even after ample abuse, they are still as effective as when I purchased them in the late 1990s. They are versatile for multiple seasons, applications, and boot adaptability. Get a pair and see for yourself why these are the real McCoy-other full gaiters are just an attempt at the OR Crocodile design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for keeping rain and snow out of your boots! I purchased these gaiters specifically for a three-day Christmas hike in the Smokies. It rained for eight straight hours on the first day, leaving the ground soggy, and all of the grass and plant life which bordered the trails soaked. During the initial day of downpour, I wore these gaiters under a pair of water proof pants and over my boots which ensured that my feet stayed dry. It was tricky getting them to hang over the final laces of the boots to make sure that the water ran all the way off of the boots instead of funneling into the tongue of the boot. Once i figured the best way to configure the gaiters with the pants and my specific boots, they worked great! For the next two days, I continued to wear the gaiters without the rain pants to keep my boots and hiking pants dry while hiking through wet grass and brush. The gaiters kept me dry, and as an added bonus, provided additional warmth to my feet and lower legs. If you're in the market for a good pair of winter gaiters, i recommend these.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough in Alaska I purchased this at the beginning of field surveys in Alaska to protect my legs and provide some water-proofing to my hiking boots. I can say that it can take a beating! Between black spruce and deadfall these have held up very well! Sadly due to boot shape or bottom of the gaiter, it does not provide a good seal at the boot so water leaks in pretty quickly if you're not careful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product I purchased these primarily to keep my pants and socks dry while snowshoeing. After researching different brands, I tried these on at a local REI and saw right away why OR gaiters get good ratings (these in particular). While more than I wanted to spend, you get what you pay for. These keep my legs dry AND warm. Any issues putting them on are due more to my lack of familiarity and practice; the more I use them, the easier they are to put on. They do seem to run a tad large; I sometimes wonder if I should have gotten a S, but the M seems to stay in place. My only concern is the longevity of the small belted strap that goes under the boot. With some of my snow boots, there is no arch area on the underside in which the strap could fit and thereby not make contact with the ground as you walk (not an issue when wearing snowshoes). But that's not really a problem with these gaiters, it's a "problem" with my footwear!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential gear for on or off the trail I like stopping to take photos and soak in the sights not to pick rocks and other stuff out of my boots - gaiters keep me going. In stream crossings I get a a little more time before my boots take on water and when crashing through the brush I get a little extra protection on the shins. No matter what the conditions, hot, dry, cold, wet, snow covered I always wear gaiters and these OR Crocs can take a huge amount of abuse and still lock tight, fit comfortable, and keep the junk out. I'm on my second set - the first set is still OK I just wanted to freshen-up the look.

How tight do the gaiters need to be at the top? I am a size 13 and I purchased the XXL. They make a good fit around my boot but even with the webbing straps cinched up all the way, they are still loose around my calves. Should I go down a size?

Asked by: Stevejames
Your boots will fit well in a size XL so we do recommend going down a size. You do not need the top of the gaiter to be tight against your leg, but if it is too loose there is a chance snow could get in through the top of the gaiter.
